Ex-Met Strawberry To Race Empire State Building Steps
NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) — Darryl Strawberry will run to the top of the Empire State Building to raise money for cancer research.
The former baseball slugger will race up 1,576 steps and 86 floors to the Observatory on Tuesday with about 100 other participants as part of the Empire State Building Run-Up. They're raising money for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
A former New York Mets and Yankees player, Strawberry was drawn to the foundation after he suffered from colon cancer. Multiple myeloma is a white blood cell cancer.
Strawberry made news earlier this week when he publicly backed his ex-teammate, Wally Backman, to be the Mets' next manager.
"Wally will be the next manager of the Mets, in my opinion," Strawberry said before the Baseball Assistance Team dinner at Midtown's Marriot Marquis. "I don't have much to say, but I thought he would've been the right choice for them."
Backman was among four finalists last fall to replace Jerry Manuel as Mets manager. Terry Collins ultimately got the top job.
