NJ Sheriff's Detective Allegedly Injured Relative

ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. (AP) -- A detective from the Passaic County Sheriff's Department allegedly got into an altercation with a 19-year-old female relative and injured her.

The Record newspaper reports that 43-year-old Douglas Laverty was arrested, charged with simple assault and released after posting $1,000 bail. Police told the paper the woman walked into the police station Jan. 19 and had a bruise on the left side of her face.

Police said Laverty, who was arrested at his home, had a bruise under his right eye.

Department spokesman William Maer said Laverty's duties have been modified, pending the outcome of the case.

Laverty did not return telephone messages Friday.
