NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — As the eighth snowstorm of the season continues to bear down on the Tri-State Area, officials issued advisories and warnings in anticipation of dangerous conditions.  As much as a half-inch of ice is expected to fall during the overnight hours from New York City up to southern Orange County.

A freezing rain advisory is in affect for New York City and Long Island until 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.  In addition, an ice storm warning for Passaic, Bergen, western Essex, western Union, Orange, Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester counties is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The area is expected to see sleet and freezing rain overnight.  By Wednesday morning, the ice is expected to change over to rain in the city, Long Island and on the Jersey shore.  The changeover will be more gradual north and west of the city before transitioning to rain.

The icy system is expected to end by mid-day Wednesday, but will likely lead to downed power lines and power outages by the time it leaves the area.

“The potential for ice-laden trees, tree branches, limbs to come down are there.  If there are winds…the limbs could smack into the power lines,” Con Edison spokesman Chris Olert said.

Olert also cautioned that people should “treat any wire or cable that’s down as if it’s alive.”

According to CBS 2′s Lonnie Quinn, the ice will become a serious problem from just south of the Big Apple up to southern Orange County during the overnight hours into Wednesday morning, with as much as a half an inch falling between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.

The northern suburbs — Sullivan, Dutchess and Ulster counties — will mostly avoid the ice but will be hit with up to an additional 6 inches of snow, bring their total to 8-10 inches by the time the system begins to move out of the region on Wednesday afternoon.

The following is a breakdown of what to expect in New York City and its immediate suburbs through late afternoon on Wednesday:

* Round 2 of this storm was to start after midnight, with a moderate ice and wintry mix falling in the city and moderate snow in the northern suburbs. Expect mostly rain in Monmouth and Ocean counties in New Jersey.

* From 2 a.m. until 7 a.m. expect more moderate icing in the city, but heavier accumulation in Westchester up to southern Orange. Heavy snow should be expected north of Poughkeepsie.

* After 7 a.m. the precipitation will begin to diminish in the city and will slowly come to a halt in points north with the last of the mix/flakes ending around 2 p.m. in the city and 4 p.m. north of Poughkeepsie.

Nycsuxnow, global warming can cause more snow. If the air is hotter on the part of the earth where it is summer, that will cause more ocean water to evaporate into the air and create more clouds and hence, more rain and snow on the part of the earth where it is winter.

Crikey! We in London were griping and moaning in December about the blizzard and the four inches of snow that fell on us. Mind you, we don’t get snow more than once or twice a year so we’re just not used to it. So on those rare occasions when we do get snow, all our traffic grinds to a halt, even if it’s just a matter of an inch of snow.

No need to curb carbon dioxide emissions, Einstein, this is how God balances out the cycle of glaciers, the ice caps are disappearing at an exponential rate, thus the ocean picks up more heat, evaporation escalates, the rain and snow hit the fan, major flooding all over the world, and in a few short years you’ll be getting six feet a snow all over North America until you’re all sitting on top of a mile high glacier again. Well, maybe a lot of us will be frozen popsicles in reserve to feed the coming explosion of polar bears. A few hairy elephants head north, and mutant mastadons will be in style once again.
