NJ Man Critical After Bite From Pet Snake

FAIR LAWN, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A New Jersey man is in critical condition after he was bitten by his pet snake.

Fair Lawn police said the 25-year-old bought the albino Monocled Cobra, an eastern diamondback rattlesnake and a copperhead snake in Pennsylvania on Monday.

Police said the man thought their venom sacks had been removed.

Sgt. Rich Schultz told The Record newspaper the cobra bit the man Monday night and the man had trouble breathing.

The man, whose name has not been released, was transferred to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, N.Y. The hospital says it has the only snakebite treatment center in the Tri-State Area.

An animal control officer removed the snakes from the home.

  2. Kenny says:

If it’s not a cat, dog, bird, or fish, then it’s not a pet.

  3. Megan Plum says:

I hope the snake did not catch any disease from the guy.

  4. margie says:

good!! he deserves it for keeping snakes that should be out in the wild and not as pets!

  5. I said GOOD DAY SIR says:

Now this is a complete moron at work. Three highly venomous snakes as pets. The venom sacs were removed? How do you check? Oh wait…you got that covered. Darwin…please don’t litter the gene pool. Make it fast and painless, but this guy needs to GO.

Now there is a classic question! I’ll bet DanTe owns a venomous snake.

  7. otto says:

does anyone know where i can get a bengal tiger? i hear they make really nice pets.

  8. Christine says:

he should die, who needs Morons like that around? He is better off dead. He has no brain!

    1. Steve says:

I agree, this sounds stupid – almost Darwinian.
However, saying someone should die just because they’re dumb? Isn’t that a bit of a harsh comment, for a guy who (might be dumb) but is fighting for his life?

If all dumb people were to simply die, the global population would be cut by 50%? 60%?

      1. I said GOOD DAY SIR says:

sooooo? there are too many people in the world breathing our oxygen, using our natural resources and polluting the gene pool with even more stupidity. I’m all for genocide, and stupid people is a great place to start. I mean think about it. My neighbor on the left side of my house? STUPID. The neighbor on the right? COMPLETE MORON. How many of you have the same problem? Now imagine those homes & lots empty and all the extra space YOU can have to yourself if we could just rid the world of IDIOTS.

    2. I said GOOD DAY SIR says:

      Hey Christine,

How would you like to suck some venom out of me baby?

  9. HUGO says:

You F with the bull, you get the horns!

    1. I said GOOD DAY SIR says:

actually he messed with a snake and got the teeth. Kinda like your mom messed with some fertilizer, and got a pile of sheeit.

  10. Leon says:

Sorry Rich, I have to agree with everyone else. Anyone dumb enough to try and make a rattlesnake a pet, pretty much deserves what he got.

  11. richard erle says:

have some compassion; the guy is dying

    1. Nick says:

Good. And here’s hoping it dies off without spawning and further infest the gene pool.

      1. nick says:

        Do you have a soul?

      2. DanTe says:

richard meant to ask if you have a stupidity, like rich has.

  12. MD says:

why is the only snakebite hosp in the tri state are in the Bronx, NY?

    1. Cindy N. says:

I believe it has something to do with the Bronx Zoo and it’s collection of venomous snakes.

      1. Steve says:

. . . and north of the city, you actually have timber rattlesnakes living in the forests, mountains (so this hospital’s relative proximity actually makes some sense).

  13. Fred says:

    Only in NJ.

    1. I said GOOD DAY SIR says:

Nah. There are useless morons named Fred in every state.

  14. Connie says:

Why would anyone think they could make a venomous snake a pet? Admire it perhaps but leave it alone! What a maroon!

    1. Editor says:

yes, not only a maroon, but a MORON as well!

    2. dd says:

he was told it was non venomous…read the article next time woman

      1. I said GOOD DAY SIR says:

        dd,

and the doctor said you lived.

        what’s your point?

  15. Joe Sr says:

Stories like this never fail to amaze me. Does anyone remember the chimp who tore off a woman’s face not too long ago? I guess this guy didn’t or didn’t care. You know what stupidity is – ignorance combined with the unwillingness to learn. I hope he recovers …

  16. Nick says:

And why is health insurance paying for this bit of stupidity?

    1. Glenn says:

This appears to be a case of Darwinism at work.

    2. I said GOOD DAY SIR says:

I agree. There should be a euthanasia clause in his policy.
