S.I. Born Aguilera Apologizes After Super Bowl Flub

NEW YORK (AP/CBSNewYork) — There’s been a lot of buzz after a super slip-up by Staten Island’s own Christina Aguilera.

The Grammy-award winner says she flubbed a line as she belted out the national anthem at the start of the Super Bowl on Sunday night after getting lost in the moment and losing her place.

“I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through,” she said in a statement after the performance.

When she was supposed to sing the line “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,” she instead repeated an earlier line, with a slight variation.

She sang, “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last reaming,” repeating and mangling an earlier lyric, with the word ‘watched’ instead of ‘hailed’ and ‘reaming’ instead of ‘gleaming.’

The mistake immediately set social networks abuzz with people commenting on the error.

She’s not the first person to mess up the lines of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” In 2001, Macy Gray was famously booed for her off-kilter rendition of the national anthem.

She garbled the words at the Pro Football Hall of Fame exhibition game in Canton, Ohio, her home state. She later told The Associated Press: “That was definitely life’s most embarrassing moment.”

And in December in Kansas City before a game between the Chiefs and the Denver Broncos, Mike Eli of the Eli Young Band flubbed up the lines of the song so badly that he had to start over.

Aguilera, who took the stage in a black dress, was returning to the Super Bowl after being one of the performers during the halftime show in Atlanta in 2000.

After it was announced that Aguilera would be singing the national anthem for the 2011 Super Bowl, she said in a news release that she had been performing the song since she was 7 and was “excited to be part of such an iconic event.”

A professional entertainer rehearses the words, and is able to sing the lyric accurately. This is another non-professional instant “idol.” Can’t sing, can’t dance, can’t act, and can’t remember anything! And for this she is paid a great deal of money??

  • doug

Anyone can make a mistake and I’m sure she feels bad!

However, she is a professional singer and has tons of experience singing in front of huge crowds. So yes I’m a little disappointed that she flubbed the national anthem.

Christina Aguilera did a TERRIBLE job singing the National Anthem at our 45th Super Bowl. Why didn’t they choose a singer who actually has class.

  • jtorres

My Social Studies teacher made my entire 7th grade class memorize the CORRECT lyrics to the National Anthem. If you know you’re going to be singing in front of millions across the globe, the least you can do is learn and memorize the correct words. And there’s no need to jazz it up. It’s hard enough to sing as is.

  • Debby

Oh come on…she was in front of MILLIONS of people, She got nervous, give her a freakin break! Many of the knuckleheads who are criticizing her don’t even know the words of the star spangled banner as well. Puleeze people!!!!!!!!!

    • A Proud American

Really?????Like she has never performed in front of a crazy crowd of fans….You know, her concerts….Really. This is the National Anthem. She not only flubbed the words, but who really found her ‘rendition’ to be anything like the real thing….just saying

      • Kathleen

The “knuckleheads” criticizing this singer object to her slovenly, non-professional, arrogant contempt. Memorizing anything more complicated than “Baby, baby, baby” is beyond her, despite years of moaning at large audiences. She was paid a great deal of money, but couldn’t be bothered to rehearse. After all, She’s a STAR!!!

She goofed and she also sounded terrible. Her best days are behind her.

My Dad who was a pearl harbor survivor who loved this country always found fault when a singer, as he would say “jazzed-up” The National Anthem.
When my Dad told me this I was young and understood how he felt but I kind of liked how different artist would express themselves when singing The NA.
Now at an older age I have come to realize how much blood, sweat and tears are behind the anthem and I now clearly understand how he felt.
Maybe some things demand more respect than other things.

She was so loud and the notes were so high, you couldn’t even understand a word she was singing

  • C.J.

Lea Michelle should have sang instead.

  • Schmellma Arss

Who listens to her, or that dreadful song, anyway?

  • methodonian man

give her some methadone, the next time….

  • Tony

Aguilera probably got distracted when thinking about the next episode of “Twilight Saga.” Anyhow, she sang the Anthem as if it was a pop Ballad, with unnecessay, extended and emotional high and low notes (it reminded me of Alicia Keys singing “No one.” Anyway, let’s take it from the top: Oh say can you see……….

  • Chris Clegg Sr.

Our National Anthem should always be sung with respect. All of these singers who love to ad-lib, treat it as a pop-song, are a disgrace!!!!!!!!!

It is our National Anthem, treat it with respct or shut up!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Maurice

Why couldn’t they have a “Plan B” (a “back-up” person much better prepared to sing the National Anthem) instead of letting her embarrass herself and all of us world-wide?

  • tom

let’s team her with roseann barr

  • Jazzertrpt

Once again, the case for music education in our schools is highlighted in front of millions. Do you know the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner?

  • Devenio

  • hister

she should give up singing and start performing in adult videos

  • I predict that...

this will not alleviate her career nosedive.

  • the METHADONE man

Aguilera was on METHADONE last night…
    That’s why I love my METHADONE !!!
