Old Navy Cans Irish T-Shirts

NEW YORK (CBS 2) — There’s outrage over t-shirts that some say unfairly stereotypes the Irish.

Two t-shirts are no longer being sold in Old Navy stores. One reads “Irish I was drunk,” and the other reads “Party like you’re Irish’ with Snoopy holding a mug that says root beer.

Reaction to the t-shirts was mixed.

“I could definitely see how some people could be offended. I’m not personally offended by it,” said Kristin O’Leary.

“Can’t you find another way to sell t-shirts than intimating they’re all drunks?” complained Keith Wilson of the Bronx.

When CBS 2 contacted Old Navy’s parent company Gap about the shirts, a spokeswoman said:  “We recognize these t-shirts went too far and we sincerely apologize to the Irish community for any offense caused. We are removing all units from the stores and online as soon as physically possible.”

Do you find the shirts offensive? Do you think Old Navy did the right thing pulling the product off their shelves? Let us know below!

I’m an Irish-American with some other ethnicities thrown in for good measure. I’m also a Snoopy/Red Baron fan and I want that t-shirt. I’m wondering, are the people who are suing saying that Irish people don’t know how to party? If that’s the case, I might as well sue them for perpetuating their stereotype on us.

  2. Peppermint Patty's Day says:

Its not a stereotype if everyone feels the same way about the Irish…

  3. Momma O says:

The problem with these tee shirts is that they were marketed toward children, but that part of the story was not mentioned.

  4. Dez, Co Donegal. says:

This is a proper face-palm moment. Lighten up and a sense of humour! There are jokes about every group of people, and the ones about us just happen to be about drinking. No big deal. People worry too much about this sort of stuff these days.

Personally I find the “irish I was drunk” one quite amusing

  5. DDKillerBlondie says:

OMG Really! Remove these from the shelves, there is nothing putting down the Irish! I am 100% Irish and I think they are cute tee’s. dumbarsed complainers ruin every thing Politacly correct JUNK!

  6. Betty says:

wow.. wait till they find out how to do the word “Russian” in American Sign Language…

  7. Jim says:

What’s next, changing the mascot of Notre Dame from the “Fighting Irish” to the “Debating Irish” because someone may be offended? Give me a break, my son joined a fraterniity and when someone asked him if he would like a beer, he stated “I’m Irish. What do you think?” Some people in this country need to stop complaining about everything and get a life.

  8. Erica says:

I am Irish American and I think they’re funny
    I would have bought one

  9. Willie says:

Hey! I take offense to the Old Navy name. The majority of our Navy is made up of young sailors. God bless us Irish.
