Police Investigate Suicide At Paramus Hospital

WOODLAND PARK, N.J. (AP) -- Police were investigating the suicide of a 49-year-old man who hanged himself with a belt at a psychiatric unit at Bergen Regional Medical Center.

Bergen County Police Sgt. Robert Carney tells The Record newspaper that the hospital has a "fairly new policy" that permits patients to have belts and shoelaces and that will be part of the investigation.

The death is one of two suicides at the hospital in the last two weeks.

The Record reports that suicides and suicide attempts have more than doubled at hospitals statewide in recent years.
