WCBS 880's Peter Haskell with the man who delivered the baby

A cab driver was driving a woman in labor to the hospital when rush hour traffic slowed them down outside the tunnel in New Jersey shortly before 9 a.m.

The baby was not willing to wait.

Officials said the driver pulled over in a safety area to the side of the toll plaza and flagged down two Port Authority police officers who helped the woman deliver a healthy baby girl.

"She was actually quite calm and seemed unfazed by it," Officer Richard Kuncken told 1010 WINS. "I'm sure she was more concerned for the situation, not so much where it was happening."

"It wasn't her first child, she's been through childbirth before and she was quite calm through the whole situation to be honest with you," Kuncken told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell.

Officer Kuncken said he had delivered a baby before – 15 years ago. Kuncken said Thursday's delivery went well, considering the circumstances.

Kuncken said the driver appeared happy during the delivery but seemed a little concerned about the back of his cab.

Mother and baby are resting at the hospital. Haskell reports the baby has been named Abigail. The parents have not been identified.

"A lot of times when we're dealing with somebody, it's because they did something wrong, so it's nice to have to deal with someone in this capacity and know that you helped them out," Kuncken said.
