Shoppers Take Advantage Of Borders’ Bankruptcy Discounts

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – Shoppers are flocking to the Borders bookstore on 57th St. for big discounts.

Last week, Borders bookstores filed bankruptcy which means approximately 200 stores will close. Among them, the flagship New York City store at 57th and Park Ave.

WCBS 880 Reporter Ginny Kosola talks with shoppers

“I got the New Yorker for forty percent off!” said one shopper.

WCBS 880’s Ginny Kosola spoke with shoppers who say they’re in the 57th St. Borders every week or during a lunch hour from work to check out what’s new or pick up a magazine.

One mom told Kosola she likes to bring her 5-year-old daughter to Borders to introduce her to reading.

“She hops from books to books and says ‘See Mom, this is the book I want!’,” said one shopper.

An experience this mom says doesn’t exist online.

I’ve seen people literally camping on the floor or lounging in Borders reading and taking notes!…I never understood why they would allow that…

I love the smell of a bookstore – the wonderful aroma of new books. You don’t get that on the internet. You really don’t get that at a library either …

another bussiness destroyed by the internet

The issue is many go to Borders to read but not enough buy what they read…

Same with B&N – they put livingroom lounge chairs and coffee shops in to encourage it – then are shocked when no one buys anything. Doesn’t anyone go to the library anymore? Mine neighborhood branch is always empty…
