Interfaith Rally Protests Rep. King’s Hearings On US Muslims

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A coalition of over 100 interfaith, nonprofit and governmental organizations rallied Sunday in Times Square against a planned congressional hearing on Muslims’ role in homegrown terrorism.

A few hundred people were on hand to hear from religious leaders of many faiths.  Those leaders denounced Long Island congressman and Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee  Peter King for taking what they said was the wrong approach.

The coalition said Thursday’s hearing would send the wrong message to U.S. Muslims by “demonizing” them.  Some in the crowd carried signs reading “I am a Muslim” in support of those who felt unfairly singled out, WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reported.

King said affiliates of al-Qaida were radicalizing some American Muslims and that he plans to hold hearings on the threat they pose to the U.S.

The Republican representative said “if there’s nothing to hide,” then Muslim Americans “should come forward to show what they’re doing to combat terrorism.”

“I cannot understand the alarm at all. I would think they’d be willing, they’d be anxious to come forward, to cooperate,” King told 1010 WINS.

“The overwhelming majority of Muslims are outstanding Americans, but at this stage in our history there’s an effort … to radicalize elements within the Muslim community,” he said in an separate interview broadcast Sunday.

The Rev. Al Sharpton and Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf, who was an initial key supporter of plans to develop a mosque near ground zero,  spoke at Sunday’s rally.

Abdul Rauf said the hearings could serve a purpose if conducted properly.

“If the focus is on extremism only and off from wherever source it comes from, it’ll be helpful.  If it’s about branding a whole religion and its adherents as security threats, that is dangerous,” he told reporters including 1010 WINS’ Sonia Rincon.

Hip-Hop mogul Russell Simmons also told the crowd that King’s hearings were dangerous and divisive.

“I think the congressman is doing it because a lot of Americans are afraid.  Instead of dispelling that fear, he’s promoting more fear,” he said.

“I’m not going to back down to demonstrations or rallies or actors or rock stars or celebrities,” King told CBS 2. “This is not not anti-Muslim this is anti-terrorist.”

A smaller, yet vocal, counter-demonstration was also held Sunday.  Participants of that rally said they supported the congressman’s hearings and held up signs to stop importing oil from Saudi Arabia and denounced Sharia law.

“We have got to get politicians who are brave enough to stand up,” said one man at the counter-protest.

King said he saw an international movement with elements in the United States of Muslims becoming more radical and identifying with terrorists.

A Minnesota Democrat, congressman Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to the House, said that while it was proper to investigate radicalization, he thought it was wrong to single out a religious minority.

The hearing was scheduled by King and is the first in a series of hearings on “radicalization” among U.S. Muslims.

I am amazed. The democrats/unionists are stating the new legislation was “pushed” through. And making other such accusations, that is, implying it was hurried through in the middle of night. This has been going on for weeks and headlined in the national news.
The Wisconsin state capitol is the forum for conducting the state business of Wisconsin. A large number of the democrats LEFT THE STATE. They choose not participate in the functions of Wisconsin state government. They failed to represent their constituents; they ran from their state and from their duties.
Representative King is doing the right thing. How did an intelligent man like him get elected in New York? All of the 9/11 terrorists were Moslem extremists (not to mention other similar incidents). Would this lead a thinking person to possibly conclude that the issue of Moslem extremism should be investigated?
Some idiot on the news was complaining that the Klu Klux Klan was not being investigated in the same congressional hearing. That would make as much sense as including the Black Panthers. Instead, why not pursue the obvious – just like King is doing.
Let’s see, 5 banks have been robbed. The robber was identified each time as a 6 ft., 200 lb., white male. Does it make sense to look for a 6 ft., 200 lb. white male? Would that be unreasonable? Would looking for Moslem males make any sense?
The 9/11 Commission stated it was not a matter of when terrorists set off a nuclear device in the United States – it was a matter of when. I, for one, am thankful for Congressman King’s investigation.

If the moslem community is not ignoring oe worse yet protecting radical extemists then it has nothing to fear. After 9/11 islamic leaders were silent or blamed the usa like Rauf. Mr. King you are right. It’s about time.

I think it was this past January that close to 200 Italian Americans, mafi people, were rounded up and arested because of murderous and harmful activity, and and I didn’t hear any of these poliiticaly correct hypocites claiming to be Italian for the day !

    1. Himmy 0 says:

regarding the want-to-be “The Sopranos” family members

      They were caught.

Do not just label them because of being ‘Italian americans” there were other races involved in various mob related business activities.

  7. StandUp says:

King is saying what most Americans want to. Why are the Muslims not more vocal against terrorism? They sure were quick to come out and protest him. When will we see the protests against the terrorists? When will they be THAT vocal?

  8. badman says:

religion as a whole, not just Islam, is the problem. we’re all gonna blow ourselves and each other up. sooner the better.

and ESPECIALLY christianity. what a freaking farce. through history, as many awful things have ben done in the name of christianity as islam.

  9. rafael lopez says:

Islam the most intolerant religion on earth, treat them as they treat others in their own countries!

  10. Hale Minefeurror says:

Personally I would be very in favor of rounding them up and placing them in work and reeducation camps. Perhaps if they work hard enough in the camps, they will be made free.

    1. badman says:

Personally muslims wouldn’t like you because your head and chin look like a tremendous slab of pork.

  11. sk says:

what is so bad about Peter King’s remarks’? we should all be silent while there are moslems all over preaching hatred and teaching their followers to kill innocent people? no its not all moslems who belive that! but I don’t hear too many innocent moslems condemning terrorism either. King has a lot of courage to speak up! good for him!

  12. ArchieBunkerSux says:

So we go over to their countries and murder millions of their people over an entire decade based on a LIE and then we worry that some of them might be “radical” enough and angry enough to do something about it? We’re STILL in Iraq and that entire war was based on a LIE! Peter King is a bigoted fascist!

  13. Simon Goldfarb says:

Burn those Arab dogs alive with flaming crude oil. Abraham and Jesus were Jews. Mohammed was Satan’s son.

    1. kingPig says:

Terrorist. You are openly condoning killings of others and Peter King is blaming Muslims for that. You can neither be a Jew nor Christian by being blasphemous.

Whether Islam is taught in the cave, bed room or in public school under strict supervision of state power, it remains the some Islam that was revealed by God in the Quran.
People who tarnish the name of Islam are those who want to use it for their personal interest or those who are not willing to find more about it. Like I always argue that Islam teaches peaceful co existence, evn if it is debated with no distortion, am not bothered since the wise will find it a religion that benefits Gods creatures. I f I had a chance; I would encourage the debate the more. To me, Sarkozy has not opened a can of worms by calling for a debate on Islam in France but a can of awareness on Islam if the debate is involving Muslim who are authority on Islam.
Let us respect each other’s religions and cultures and unite under diversity in order to live happily together in this world. None is superior apart from those whom God has empowered with wisdom to lead us and contribute necessities of life.

Issa – thats wonderful. and you know what – a large % of Germans didn’t want Nazism either – but they basically remained silent and the world was consumed.
I am sure there are peaceful muslims – I know some / work with some. But they do not speak out – some are passive, some are afraid – some silently hope that there is a world wide calaphate. The peaceful ones – if they do not rise up and speak out against anti-semitism, against the persecution of jews and christians around the world – their view will be meaningless!
This country MUST make a stand soon against radical Islam – like they are trying in France – No shariah law here – no persecution of woman – no hatred of any religion.
Peter King is doing what you Peaceful Muslims should do

    2. Chris Johnson says:

Muslims should also respect the persecuted non-Muslims in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Suadi Arabia, Nigeria, etc.

  17. jf says:

Hey guys – look what is going on in France –

This is what is coming to America – no matter what you hear – CAIR and their group of stealth Islamic radicals have a plan – and you better get the picture now while we still might be able to do something about it

  18. RUSA says:

I still haven’t seen any clear commitment from the Muslim community as a whole. They whinge and whine at every turn that they’re being persecuted, but do nothing to prove their fealty to the U.S. and the principles of democracy and freedom.

    1. kingPig says:

The principles of democracy and freedom does not allow to target people based upon their religion. Do you even know the meanings of these words? If you only see cnn and fox, you will never hear anything that Muslims condemn or say or protest. If you dont see anything, does not mean that it is never there.

  19. Ellen says:

The problem here is that Muslims as a whole don’t come out with gusto to loudly criticize the radical Muslims that demonizes their religion more so the any one else.

    1. kingPig says:

Would Jews apologize for Christ killing or Christians apologize for Hitler?

      1. nick says:

Christ and Hitler are not issues happening right now

    2. kingPig says:

Really, so what is happening now? Iraq, Afghanistan, hundred of thousands civilians dead, trillions of dollars of tax money lost causing recession just to capture few terrorists who are still at large?.Would you apologize for Bush?

  20. Sheri A. Hall says:

Peter King is an ignorant lunatic. We DO NOT need another McCarthy era.

    1. Tom says:

“Ignorant lunatic?” Anyone who cries “McCarthism!” sounds more on the lunatic fringe to me.

  21. kingPIg says:

At the time when other enemy powers are rising and our influence declining, this is the last thing we need to create rift within our society. These extremist moron politicians only love money and power, does not matter even it comes at the expense of their own country. Take the example of outsourcing. ‘Cause they need money. Divide people on the basis of race, color and now religion, ’cause they need votes and distraction so that they continue to plunder and exploit our tax money. Extremist measures will create extremism.

  22. Lando says:

Grab all mooslims by throat and kick them back where ever.

    1. kingPig says:

And all muslim countries should do the same with christians? What a peaceful thought. Moron

      1. RUSA says:

There’s no need for that as the Muslim world has done its level best to expunge Christianity for ages. The Christian populations continue to dwindle in many areas that have had robust communities for centuries. Name on Muslim country where Christians are not routinely persecuted and marginalized. In Saudi Arabia, it is against the law to even bring a bible into the country.

      2. bart says:

You really cant be taken serious with that moniker moron

      3. kingPig says:

RUSSA, you forgot Israel’s Jew only policy. Bottom line is that we are talking about peace and prosperity here in the United States. Bigots like you distort the history and generalize everything and try creating rifts between religions. On one side we brag about our freedom of speech and equality and then start comparing it with non-developed dictator states that we by the way support since we need oil. Hypocrite

  23. Johnny T says:

I like the patch and button idea too. Sure would make it easy to tell who is Muslimm and who is not.

  24. teetotaler says:

A long time ago Rep. Peter King went gung ho after Louis Farrakhan on a daily basia. Then all of a sudden he dropped Farrakhan like a hot potato. It’s obvious that someone got to him.

  25. Jerry says:

We must stress assimilation to our culture. The fact that they come here for a better life.
If they continue to bring their radical culture here it would only delay acceptance of their lifestyles.
They left tyranny, still they stir emotions attempting to bring their discriminating views of other religions and woman to our shores? It can only be derived as bizarre as it will not be accepted and rightly so.
They must accept all of our cultural religions and laws! PERIOD!

  26. pugphan says:

The great Saint, Francis told the Sultan that Islam is evil. That is a fact. It’s also a miracle that the Sultan let the great saint walk out of empire unscathed. So though
they themselves may not be evil, they are locked into a demonic faith which is full of evil deeds. Just check out the facts, their treatment of women, totalitarian government systems, and 9/11. enuf said! smokersodyssey.com

  27. Frank Rizzo says:

Any easy solution to the problem of radical muslims would be to make them wear a patch or button on their chest that would identify them as muslims. I think that would really help things.

There’s one big difference – the Jews didn’t go around killing innocent people!

      4. kingPig says:

And how many people are killed by American Muslims? In that sense Christians are at the top of list by your logic. Forgot Oklahoma bombing, school shootings, Arizona massacre, killings of black slaves, red Indians etc. Clear your brain from Islamophobia you bigot.

    2. Steve says:

Frank – maybe you should stop replying to these, and return to your work digging ditches, or working your jack-hammer.

  28. Steve Wilson says:

This is nothing more than a rehashing of McCarthyism. How stupid they will all look in fifty years…
