Man, Wife Remain Critical After Crash On I-87 In Westport

WESTPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities said three people remain hospitalized after they were struck by an out-of-control car while standing alongside an upstate New York highway after an earlier crash.

State police told the Press-Republican of Plattsburgh that 40-year-old Igor Begelman of Brooklyn struck a guardrail along Interstate 87 near Exit 31 in Westport, in the Adirondacks.

Troopers said 62-year-old Boris Gelman and 60-year-old Sonya Gelman of Fairport, near Rochester, were following Begelman Sunday and stopped to assist him.

Police said all three were inspecting the damage to Begelman's car when another vehicle driven by Kseniya Vasilyev spun around backwards and struck the wrecked car as well as Begelman and the Gelmans, pinning them between her car and the guardrail.

The Gelmans were listed in critical condition Tuesday at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., while Begelman was in good condition.

State Police issued Vasilyev and Begelman tickets for unsafe speed, according to the Press-Republican.
