Feds: NYC Woman Hid Cash To Avoid Land Sale Tax

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Federal authorities said a New York City woman arrested at Kennedy Airport allegedly concealed $170,000 in her underwear to avoid paying taxes on the sale of property in Sudan.

According to the Daily News, a customs official testified in a Brooklyn court Monday that Claire Abdeldaim of Queens removed the underwear and placed it in her purse during a layover in Amsterdam on a flight from Khartoum last June.

The official said when she arrived at JFK, she declared only $17,000.

The 64-year-old woman was free on $100,000 bail. If convicted of the smuggling charge, she faces up to 21 months in prison.

Her lawyer said during cross-examination that the customs official wouldn’t allow her to amend the declaration form.

Why would the Federal Government collect taxes on a Sudanese sale that is none of their business. Unless she is an American Citizen????? Sounds like abuse to me. She can say whatever she wants regarding this matter. Either the reporter has their facts wrong or she’s American.
