Charles Barkley Rips Knicks On WFAN, Letterman

NEW YORK (WFAN) — Sir Charles has spoken.

NBA analyst Charles Barkley attacked the Knicks’ season ticket price hikes — and their defense — with a two-pronged media assault on Monday.

“Oh, they got Carmelo Anthony and everybody’s excited,” Barkley said on David Letterman’s “Late Show” couch. “First of all, Carmelo’s a terrific player, Amar’e (Stoudemire’s) a terrific player and I like Landry Fields, but I gotta say, I watched the Knicks play. In the history of all basketball, they may be the worst defensive team ever. They play zero defense, and they’re not gonna do well in the long run.”

Prior to his Letterman appearance, “The Round Mound of Rebound” blasted the Knicks on WFAN for raising their season ticket prices.

“That was a disgrace, a flat-out disgrace,” Barkley told Boomer & Carton. “Come on, that’s not fair at all. To raise tickets that much, and I understand that all these guys are trying to make money, but 50 percent is a little extreme. Let me rephrase that, a lot extreme.”

In 10 years, Knicks tickets have risen only once, remaining flat the last six during the team’s postseason absence. The playoff drought appears likely to end behind Stoudemire and Anthony.

“The Knicks have been stinking for a long time and these fans have always been loyal,” Barkley added. “For them to jab them like that with a 50 percent increase, that’s unfair.”

He is right as rain. They stink to high heaven–and the fish stinks from the head. The league should find some way of removing the Knick management, post haste. I
would never have made that last trade at all. I don’t always agree with Charles Barkley, but this time he is right on the money.

I love Charles and he’s right that the Knicks have little or no defense. There’s no doubt that the Knicks are a better team with Melo, but their lack of “D” will keep them from going too far in the playoffs. They are lacking one special ingredent (a big man in the middle) before they dominate the league.

And raising ticket prices 50% will come back to bit them in the rear. Two weeks ago, I swithced from Cablevision to Verizon–and I’m never going back to Dolan & Co.

C’mon, take ANYTHING that Sir Charles says with a grain of salt! He’s a hard-drinking, opinionated, arrogant ESS-OH-BEE!

mike i dont like barkley at all but he is right on the mark with this knick fans are the best want to raise prices win frist then raise price not just because of melo

  7. Murray says:

How can anyone be surprised by the rise in Knicks and Rangers ticket prices? Have we all forgotten that the little troll…..James Dolan….owns these teams? He will gouge customers anywhere anytime and not have any remorse about it! Just ask Cablevision customers! About Sir Charles….why do we still give this guy the time of day? I can’t wait to see his “roundness” embarrass himself to no end on the NCAA telecasts!

To say they will not do well in the long run is where he is wrong. You don’t know if Dantoni will be coaching this group for the long run and you don’t know who that final big third player is going to be. So to say that they will never be good long term just reeks of bias. And yes, Charles is against the Knicks. He never ever has anything good or positive to say about them. Listen to him carefully, when talking about the Knicks he never gives credit to them even after a good win. That is why I don’t pay attention to Charles. The one thing you can’t do as a TV commentator is not being objective and Charles comments are almost always too subjective to be taken seriously.

Take a hike Charles, nobody in their right mind cares what you have to say.

  9. Stephen says:

They need Camby in the middle as a last resort stopper. Then, Anthony can do his matador defense (thank you Clyde) as someone (everyone!) charges down the middle for a dunk! I don’t know how Clyde sits through these defensive jokes night after night without running out on the court.

Barkley is a drunken blowhard.. Worst defense ever?? Seem to recall a Phoenix team with Dan Majerle and Sir Big mouth trying to defend Jordan.. Now that was some of the worst defense I ever saw.

    1. StormsNYC says:

      nobody could defend Jordan…

  11. Steve says:

Charles Barkley has some good points on this.
With all of the $$$ at the team’s disposal, they are finally doing something useful with it (Stoudemire, Anthony, etc.).
However, how can they win it all if we don’t have a real center? I don’t get it!
