NYC Man Gets 13 Years For Branding Woman With Iron

NEW YORK (AP) -- A New York City man who burned his girlfriend's face with a searing hot iron has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Eric Persaud pleaded guilty last month to assault and bribing a witness for trying to stop his 27-year-old girlfriend from testifying against him. He was sentenced Wednesday.

Prosecutors say in April of 2009 the two argued over her calling police to report an incident in which he broke her computer. They say Persaud forced her into their bathroom, shoved a rag into her mouth and burned both of her cheeks. He also cut her.

She was hospitalized for 11 days. Queens District Attorney Richard Brown says the man made more than 400 calls to her from jail after his arrest, telling her he'd harm her if she testified.
