NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A smorgasbord of precipitation was hitting parts of the Tri-State Area Wednesday night.
Rain, sleet, snow and ice were pairing with thunder and lightning, causing area roadways to become icy and treacherous.
There were reports of poor conditions and accidents on the Saw Mill Parkway and ice on exit ramps on the Garden State Parkway. There are also many other weather-related travel issues across the area.
Area airports are also reporting delays of up to one hour. Travelers are advised to check with their carrier for specific flight information.
AccuWeather said our area is now in the middle of Wednesday night’s bad weather as it faces a “kitchen sink” of precipitation, which will change over to mostly snow later in the evening.
“It’s mostly a rain event right now, lots of thunderstorms, but the key hours will come during the overnight,” CBS 2′s Lonnie Quinn said. “Once the cold front pushes through the temperatures will drop enough to turn much of this moisture into snow.”
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through Thursday morning for all NYC suburbs north and west of I-287 and the Merritt Parkway. A Winter Storm Warning has been posted for Sussex, Warren, Morris, upper Passaic and Orange counties, where 2 to 4 inches of snow are possible overnight.
According to the CBSNewYork.com weather team, up to 3 inches in addition to what fell Monday morning is possible in points north and west of New York City.
