More Human Remains Found In Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Probe

Situation Serious On Long Island As Victims List Grows To 8

GILGO BEACH, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — There was yet another chilling discovery on Long Island on Monday.

Chopper 2 HD was over Gilgo Beach where police searching for victims of a serial killer found the remains of three more people, bringing the total to eight, reports CBS 2’s Jennifer McLogan.

It was a stunning and disturbing development – the remains were discovered along Ocean Parkway, bringing the total to eight. Police now suspect a possible serial killer.

It remains a perplexing mystery with few clues for searchers and one seasoned forensic expert, who told CBS 2’s Derricke Dennis he’s trying to determine whether these eight deaths are the work of one killer, or more — and whether they’ll strike again.

“I wouldn’t be at all surprised. I would not be at all surprised,” John Jay College professor Dr. Charles Bahn said.

“It could be two men who do this together. One of them doing the killing and the other much more interested in the sex.”

Through dense poison ivy bramble and tick-infested undergrowth a phalanx of Suffolk County investigators intensified the search for the missing New Jersey woman, 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert of Jersey City, and what they found was almost beyond comprehension.

“I’d like to report at this time that we found human remains, three human remains so far in the area between Oak Beach and Gilgo Beach,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said.

Flanked by the district attorney, the police commissioner pledged that the identification of the remains will be swift as heartbroken families wait to hear if their missing daughters might be among the latest remains discovered — along a stretch of Ocean Parkway east of Jones Beach.

“The medical examiner is going to be looking at the possibility that Shannan Gilbert is one of the remains,” Dormer said. “We do have forensic and information available to the ME that would either prove it’s her or eliminate her.”

Last week, a fifth individual still unidentified was discovered in rugged underbrush. Four women were found nearby in December. They had worked as prostitutes and escorts advertising on Craigslist.

Helicopters hovered above as cadaver sniffing dogs marched through the terrain. With snow now melted and before the foliage of spring gets underway, the remains were pulled from a 4-foot tall tangle of sea grass and scrub pine, not far from the quiet isolated beachfront location where Gilbert was last seen in May begging for protection at 5 a.m. at a stranger’s door.

“I come over here and start dialing 9-1-1 and I was giving the information and she opened the door and ran. She fell halfway down the stairs,” witness Gus Coletti told McLogan.

Gilbert vanished into the brush. The client she was going to see was cleared as a suspect. As 1010 WINS’ Mona Rivera reports, resident Joseph Brewer’s home was searched as part of the investigation into Gilbert’s disappearance. Brewer said he was innocent in the case, and his home is now for sale.

Oak Beach residents have said that their property values are suffering as a result of their neighborhood being used as a murderer’s dumping ground.

A seven-mile stretch of the westbound side of the Robert Moses Parkway running to Tobay Beach has been shut down.

Are authorities doing enough to stop the suspected serial killer? Sound off in our comments section.

Did no one notice it says in the article… I believe from the Medical Examiner, that he wouldnt be surprised if this was the work of more then one person? I think its comical that everyone posts political garbage in the middle of a discussion about a string of murders… until its someone they know.. then omg.. how dare you.. also, a first responder? lol.. the guy spouting that must work for Newsday.. and whos to say that all of them are prostitutes? I bet if I lined up 5 women and told you 3 of them were prostitutes, you might just pick 2 of 5… maybe. Yes it snowed all winter, but if there was a million in gold in the bushes, every cop from NJ to Maine wouldve been looking for it.. just some things to ponder… lmfao.

First of all, my prayers and support for the Gilbert family and families of all the girls.

It appears that if Shannan’s family hadn’t stayed on top of her disappearance none of these girls would have been found. The finding of the latest 3 was a result of an officer “noticing” something from the road. I think if it was so noticeable than why wasn’t regular patrolling of the area enough to have uncovered these bodies long before now? Maybe the patrols neglected to patrol? I was down there dropping off some people more than once and it’s not at all difficult to notice activity of any kind especially suspicious ones. If someone is pulled over by the reeds you can spot them easily for a distance as there are no obstructions. If a car is pulled over, is running but no one inside or outside the car, that is suspicious and was reported but wonder if anything was done with that tip.

As for Shannan, it is a travesty that police had not come to her aid quickly. How could she be on 911 for 23 minutes and vanish? A 911 call in her desperation coupled w/Mr. Coletti’s 911 call should have had cops racing to the location immediately! What happened with PINGING her cell phone?? That works real good to pinpoint an EXACT location and without a warrant. And what kind of driver did she have that didn’t know what was going on? These girls use these drivers as a “protection”??? The area there is not a place to just vanish when on foot. There are very few homes and very limited ways to get off the land as it is surrounded by water. There are people who know but don’t want to say. This is the land of “mind your business” where few will help someone in distress unlike Mr. Coletti. Don’t get involved is the motto of most on LI. I know! I’ve had to act when others stood by allowing any number of harmful or dangerous situations and it has caused me to part ways with those who disagree.

Again, to the Gilbert family may God bless and keep you and bring you peace. And may Shannan be found.

JY Maybe there would be more patrol if we raise taxes to increase funding for additions to the nys police force….troopers patrol that area and they often have to come long distances with their backup even further….another oversight on your part: if the serial killer had any brains…they probably aren’t dumping bodies when a conspicuous marked police vehicle is within eyesight. its always easy to monday morning quarterback. It is sad though, that with multiple calls this girl could not have been saved, but why she would run back down the beach away from the houses is a little strange also.

      1. JY says:

The answer to better patrolling is not more money but to better use what’s already budgeted.

Of course the killer wouldn’t risk dumping a body when police vehicles are present. If anyone has been down there between midnight and sunrise one knows how easy it is to do something unthinkable as there are RARELY patrols driving through. Driving the streets at night during that same time-frame in more populated areas you won’t find cars patrolling as much as sitting behind buildings congregating w/other cops or “friends”. Gus Coletti, the guy whose house she ran to, has expressed regrets that he had not done more. It is odd that she ran from his house when at first she ran to him for help. Between Joe Brewer, anyone in his home, the driver and Gus someone should know more than what we hear. It may be the case the police have info from these men that they’re not releasing.

With the expanded search and finding new remains, especially that of a toddler, I do pray and hope the search doesn’t end there as I heard on the news this morning that Nassau called it quits.

If anyone said this about Bush the FBI would be at their door, even though he is the real one responsible for our current economic situation. Bush who raped the country out of trillions for a war which served us no purpose and accomplished nothing, allowed the banks to rape the American public, and then started the process to bail them out. Any of the decisions Obama has made that you see as mistakes were made to try to correct the cluster _____ that GW Bush left our country in. It is amazing how little people remember.

You white people are tripping if this guy was black, asian or hispanics. They would be hanged to the crows to pick. Just discussing, yeah, the killer is not Joseph Brewer.

JOSEPH BREWER IS THE KILLER! Shannon said to 911, ” JOSEPH BREWER IS KILLING ME.” JOSEPH BREWER, you are the killer. It just a matter of time.

JOSEPH BREWER IS THE SERIAL KILLER! JOSEPH BREWER IS THE SERIAL KILLER!

This is the work of a remorseless psychopath: white male 25-45, probably lives within a 20 mile radius of dumping grounds, employed, doesn’t stand out in a crowd, has a plausible facade that helps him fit into the neighborhood. He is very, very comfortable with this area, and confident.
To catch the animal we are hunting we need to some background info on its particular lifestyle and habits. The only psychopaths that are known, are the ones that have been captured. Hopefully soon, this one too will be captured before another life is cruelly taken from an innocent victim. Chances are that he will modify his M.O. and lay low for while(6mos-1-2yrs). From the body count, he enjoys what he is doing and does not want to be caught. Being caught for this individual, and others like him, is only an inconvenience that hinders. Eyes open wide and clear, psychopaths are chameleons who blend with their surroundings; as are all ambush predators! God watches over all His children.

  13. Donna says:

They say the FBI was called in, why no profile? Surely there must be enough evidence by now! Did anyone ever say how these women were killed?

  14. Casual Observer says:

They could use law enforcements tried and true body language observation techniques. Just start interviewing people and if someone looks away for a split second during questioning then that means they are guilty. Case solved.

    1. Penny says:

No, that would mean that they are nervous…like most people are when they’re being questioned by the police, whether guilty or innocent. Looking away for a split second? You’re kidding, right? The case is solved when you can actually presented the EVIDENCE needed to secure a conviction. Otherwise, you only have speculation.

      1. Concerned says:

Bottom line they should use all techniques at their disposal. Even speculation can lead to a profitable end.

      2. Casual Observer says:

        I was kidding…
All my posts are being censored…Casual Observer out…

    2. Liz says:

False! Serial killers as well as repeat sexual offenders don’t act nervous when they are being questioned. They are confident, and have worked their whole lives learning to blend into society and stay under the radar. They are expert liers. You won’t catch them in a lie that easily.

  15. Concerned says:

Eight deaths are a tragic amount of loss. Law enforcement officials need to issue a reliable profile to help raise awareness about these horrible men. If they were to issue a profile which described a black man, they would be crucified by the liberal media for being racist. Law enforcement shouldn’t have the additional barrier politics provides. Statistically, most serial killers are white anyway. If the law enforcement agencies could just do their job without fear of “offending” somebody by describing a member of their race, their job would be so much easier, and therefore, more effective. Even the president found time to call a Boston police officer stupid for arresting a black professor, when the black professor was acting way out of control. Am I saying the perpetrator is black? No. I guess I’m just saying he better not be.

  16. Nassau Resident says:

How can they possibly know that these are remains of prostitutes if they cannot identify some of them?? Are they labeled or tatooed “prostitute”
HMMMMM??? Inspector Cleuseau??? Suffolk PD is on the case no worries anyone…

  17. Sam in Sag Harbor, NY says:

When the Police create a PROFILE on this serial rapist/murderer I’m sure the profile will be a MALE, MIDDLE AGE and WHITE – which also describes myself and I am in NO WAY offended by the profile. Unlike the politically correct arseholes out there, call it like it is. As my saying goes, “Most Muslims are not terrorists BUT most terrorists are Muslim”
This all being said – once the Police create that profile I would suggest interviewing everyone in the area who fits the profile and has sought treatment for Lyme’s Disease. No way someone goes into that brush that many times and doesn’t get ticks on them. Lyme’s Disease is a long shot but maybe they get lucky.

  18. Jim O'Neill says:

They should check the parking tickets issued in that area at the times of the disappearances. That’s how they caught Son of Sam.

  19. Nassau Resident says:

This investigation is a F—ing joke. The Suffolk County PD couldnt find their ass with both hands its a disgrace. There have been bodies and body parts found ALL OVER Suffolk, in Riverhead, Center Moriches, Various parks, along the Long Island Expressway, in the pine barrens and NOTHING is said about that. How the MORON comissioner still has his job is a mystery to me\. but that par for the course in suffolk. I never really expect much from the people out there. They are STOOOOOPID….Really “sorry” to hear about the property values dropping due to this crime spree. With every word they just keep proving my point. Route 110 east and south of the Long Island Expressway (495) is the LI equivalent of the Mason/Dixon line…….What a bunch of toothless wonders

    1. Donna says:

Even though I live on the side of the line where the “toothless wonders” reside I have to say that is one funny post!
