Mets' Young Simply Unstoppable... On Offense!

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) -- Mets fans, meet Chris Young -- the 6-foot-10 right-hander that can apparently do it all.

Young and the Mets roughed up Cole Hamels in a 7-1 victory over Philadelphia on Tuesday night, handing the Phillies their first loss of the season.

Young, a career .137 hitter coming into the game, contributed in a big way at the plate -- becoming the first Mets pitcher with two hits in an inning. He chased Hamels with a two-out RBI single that made it 6-0.

"It's special to be a part of Mets history. It's a great franchise and certainly I would have never have dreamed that," said Young. "Hopefully there's a lot of great things to come as a team and we can accomplish some great things together."

Making his first start since joining New York, Young gave up one run and five hits, striking out seven in 5 1-3 innings.

"That's a tough lineup," Young said. " I was trying to make good pitches."

"He had all his pitches working tonight," Scott Hairston said. "I've seen him perform like this plenty of times."

Young missed most of last season while recovering from shoulder surgery he had in August 2009. The 6-foot-10 right-hander was a solid pitcher with San Diego. He was 27-19 with a 3.44 ERA for the Padres from 2006-08.

"I didn't think once about my shoulder. It feels good right now," Young said. "I'm happy to be part of a win, and a great team win. It's a lot better than losing your first outing and getting knocked out."

The four-time NL East champion Phillies were trying for their first 4-0 start since 1915. Instead the Mets and Phillies are tied, 3-1.

"The guys are fired up," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "They are playing hard, and everybody wants to be a piece of it, which I think will make a big difference in the middle of the season."

"I listen to people talk about the Mets," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "The Mets have a pretty good lineup, really. They've got some players. I hear people talk about how many games they are going to lose. Let me tell you something: They've got good players. Look at their lineup. They've got some speed. They've got some power. They put together 13 hits tonight. We've got to beat them. We've got to play hard against them. They're more than a second-division team, I'm telling you."
