NYC Councilman Leroy Comrie Proposes Bill Banning ‘Happy Meals’

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — San Francisco’s already done it, and now New York may follow suit. New York City Councilman Leroy Comrie thinks the city should consider a ban on “Happy Meals” and similar fast food promotions aimed at kids unless those meals meet certain nutritional standards.

1010 WINS’ John Montone reports: Taking The Happy Out Of Happy Meals?

Comrie has fought the battle of the bulge himself.

“As you know, and I’m an example, nearly one-third of all children in New York City and throughout the United States are either overweight or obese,” Comrie said.

Comrie planned to introduce his own bill Wednesday that would essentially rewrite what could currently be considered a “Happy Meal.” The bill would require establishments that offer toys with food make sure the meals are 500 calories or less and have low fat and low sodium totals.

Penalties would be steep: between $200 to $2,500 for repeat restaurant offenders who use toys to sell unhealthy meals.

Comrie said fast food restaurants know exactly what they’re doing.

“It comes as no surprise that these ads and meals are also targeted in low income and minority neighborhoods that are already at risk for childhood obesity. These are the same communities that have limited access to supermarkets, limited access to healthy food options,” Comrie said.

In a statement, Mason Smoot, vice president and general manager for McDonald’s in the New York Metro Area said, “Our Happy Meals make it easier for families to choose the right foods in portions just for kids. We provide options for our customers and trust them to make the decisions that are right for their families. Politicians should too.”

Do you side with Councilman Comrie? Should Happy Meals be banned? Let us know below…

  • George

The Fat Man cannot control his own eating, and now he wants to control what everyone else eats. Hey Fat Man Commie, stop shoveling food into your fat face, you fat commie!

  • J.R.

What. ban McDonald’s food? Where are all those thousands of people McDonalds proposes to hire going to work if half their sales are banned? As an aside; am I the only one who wonders why McDonalds always seems to show black people eating the fast food. One rarely sees and ad or a photo showing caucasians eating the stuff.

    • Bruzilla

So… when McDonalds used to show mostly whites in their commercials, they were racists and racially insensitive. Then when they try to be more racially sensitive and showing blacks, they are targeting them to be unhealthy. Seems like McDonalds can’t win for losing.

  • Elroy Jetson

We’re currently living in Sweden which is the ultimate nanny state and they don’t even do that here, well, not yet anyway. I just hope that when we move home, America will still be America.

    • thomasSERVO

Europe is several miles ahead on the path to “social” democracy, i.e. state capitalism than the US. You guys have seen where that path leads and have done the 180 and are trying to reverse your steps. Thus you are now headed back our way, but we are too stupid not to follow your original direction all the way to the end of the path before we try to escape the miserable end game.

I’m finally beginning to agree with all the people in the US that for years who have been saying “be more like Europe,” because Europe now is trying to be more like what America once was than even current America is today.

Luckily as much as progressives love abortion, they are systematically aborting their future demographics at the same time they are aborting their children.

    • Dolf

If Obongo gets reelected just stay in Sweden.

  • Commie Indeed

Raise your own kids Leroy Commie.

    • Leroy Comrie

      I wish: they’re too fat!

  • kornhole

He’s just trying to shake McDonalds down for a campaign contribution. You think he gives a rat’s ass about those ghetto kids?

  • Sick and Tired

OMG!!!!! Stop the Insanity!!!! Tell these God da – – Politicians to stay out of out lives!!!!!

  • henry

Didn’t they already ban trans fat (not fat trans)?

What’s next, NYC to ban eating.

  • LB

There is a deep ideological divide in this country being reconciled in the legislatures and courts on a daily basis. Each side has suffered victories and losses. One thing is certain, the left is not going to throw in the towel until government controls every aspect of our lives (how we live, work, travel, eat, spend, worship, what we read and think). Communists infiltrated our country in the early 20th century by way of labor unions and universities. They’re teaching our children in the public schools and buying legislators with union dues which is driving this transformation that started in the last century. The bottom line is we need education, entitlement, immigration, tax and energy policy reform. Nothing short of a drastic spiritual awakening will reverse course and save our Republic.

    • Demobust

LB- I agree with your narrative’s sentiment, however the use of “reconciling” to describe the unrelenting caustic pernicious behaviors of the majority of the democratic party is damnable. It’s time to choose up sides are you a socialist or an American?

    • Midwest Jim

In a few short lines, you did a great job of summing up the situation. The key will be getting enough people to WAKE UP and see’s what down the road if we don’t change course.

When Al Gore tried to play the class warfare card, he was largely ineffective. Today it seems like that is the only card Obama plays. Not only are the rich “evil”, but the poor are all “victims”. Plays pretty well I guess to the couch potato society in which we live. So much easier to blame others for your own lack of success than to actually make the effort to BE successful.

  • boB

Also, since they are so concerned with the Health of their citizens, maybe they should prevent those getting food stamps or Welfare from using McDonalds too? Make them show a government ID that states whether they are on the dole or not and if so, they can’t because the government knows what’s best for you.

Better yet, why not put a “sin” tax on all fast food outlets (that includes Pizza) like they do for tobacco and alcohol? Gotta be consistent!

  • frank w

Politicians like this guy know that anyone dumb enough to vote for them is too dumb to decide what their children should be eating.

  • tvstaff

This same idiot says taxes are too low in New York City and we need to raise them for SEIU because union workers don’t make enough money.

This man is insane and the Communist Party modality of NYC Democrats is DANGEROUS.

This is another example of The Socialist Workers Families Party getting another NUT JOB in office.

  • HDavis

Councilman Comrie looks like he generates his own gravitational field. I believe he’s engaging in projection. If he can’t stay away from the Happy Meals, then maybe he needs a 12 step program of some sort.

  • boB

Easy fix. Just sell the meal for $.20 less and advertise that you can get the toy for just $.20 more with the purchase of a happy meal. DONE! The happy meal no longer includes the toy and these guys can go back to finding other ways of sticking their nose in our business.

  • Guarionex Sandoval

I am a Ph.D. in Human Nutrition/Nutritional Biology, U. Chicago, 2001. A McDonald’s Happy Meal, as well as anything else sold at McDonalds, is nutritionally sound and wholesome food. The fact that one can get fat on the food simply means that it is a nutritionally dense food. It is high in the single most important thing that makes a food a food: caloric content. Without vitamins or essential fats or certain minerals one can go for quite a long time before there is any physiological impairment. Not so with caloric content provided by the macronutrients, sugar (mostly sucrose in our diet), fats, and proteins. Go without these for even 24 hours and you start to weaken and your body starts to catabolize its own proteins. Go without these for a week and you’ll really start to suffer. Go for more than that and you’ll risk serious trouble. So McDonalds is not everyone’s idea of “healthy food”. This is mostly just a description of their own nutritional ignorance. But it’s not unhealthy and who eats or doesn’t choose to eat it is none of any government’s business.

  • kidsdonthavemoney

targeting low income, minority neighborhoods? is that the only place the McD’s ads run? is that the only place they sell happy meals? really? Just because lardo doesn’t have the intestinal fortitude to step away from the cheeseburger doesn’t mean they should be outlawed. Besides, if the ads are targeting children, last time I checked four year olds don’t just go to McD’s by themselves, there is usually a “responsible” adult along with them. and if the parents don’t want the kids to get a Happy Meal, they don’t get one.

How hard is that to understand? If the parent can’t say “no” to a four year old over a simple happy meal, no wonder the kids grow up with a sense of entitlement.

  • tom

LEROY COMRIE? Let me guess, he’s a lefty? HEY LEROY, let me fix your name for you…LEROY COMMIE. There, that’s better.

  • MW33

How about they just ban prepared food in NYC. That should solve the problem.

  • Kit

See, that’s where you’re wrong. Liberals ARE the ones who want to tell you how to live your life.
Conservatives just want you to stay out of theirs.

    • freedom not chains

      You are so right.
Doesn’t ole Leroy have the perfect last name too ?? Commie ??!!
Oh wait, that would be Comrie, I guess !! My mistake. Maybe he became one because of his last name, Or not.

  • Where am I?

Free Enterprise. Free Enterprise. Free Enterprise. Capitalism . It’s the USA, Remember?

  • glenn

Are you sure his name is Comrie! I believe it’s Commie>

  • Kit

Yes, and thanks to the War on Drugs and the thousands of new laws banning your cold medicine, we no longer have a drug problem either- life is *perfect* under Our Dear Leader !

  • Otto

Great…. telegraph to the terrorists where the cops will be. The FBI was rooting these guys out through the happy meal connection. Way to strike a blow (and hopefully not blow up) to real crime.

    • Mr P

I guess this will force the cops out of the dougnut shops. New York City is just another San Francisco, but dumber.

  • bill

welcome to the tyrannical fascist world of demarxcrats and Obamacare.

  • likeitis

Are food stamps accepted at fast food restaurants? I see ATM machines at these places, do they accept food stamp cards as well? Society should only provide food at food pantries for the truly needy and provide just very basic foods such as carrots, onions, rice etc. It should be basic, healthy, but also something people would want to get off of and watch out for the tax payers pocketbook as well. Unfortunately there are way too many people scamming the system, “single” mothers with a boyfriend living with them or who think of welfare as simply a lifestyle choice.

  • benrumsley

You have got to be sh@#g me. People pay tax dollars so some IDIOT can have the police chase the Burger King and the Hamburgler. What the He#$ has this country turned into? It certainly isn’t one where personal responsibility is used anymore.

  • TWRauch

Don’t you mean MICHAEL H. CHRIST?, the brother of JESUS H.? Yes, More Gubmint is the messiah isn’t it?

  • chuck in st paul

This guy is a racist jerk in the first place. He whines that the ads target poor minority neighborhoods. What, McD’s Happy Meals are only sold in poor minority neighborhoods?? That’ll be news to all the brats around here in middle class Midwest.

    What a moron.

  • I Love Happy Meals

He says “It comes as no surprise that these ads and meals are also targeted in low income and minority neighborhoods” but it comes as a strong surprise to me that anyon could try to justify such a blatantly untrue statement. A happy meal is a hhappy meal. It is not some government dispersed item given free to low income peoples at group shelters. People of all incomes like to reward their children with a nice surprise once in awhile and they should be allowed to spend their money as they see fit. Capitalism is the law of the land and trying to say what can be sold and at what price will get you nowhere.

  • Wish I could afford McDonalds

Who could afford to feed their kids McDonalds regularly besides a NYC welfare rat?

  • Thom Jefferson

My God, what an idiot. What kind of people elect such an imbecile? No wonder people are fleeing the state.

Let’s put all these criminally insane people in coastal california and blast 10 thermonuclear devices along the san andreas fault — good riddance.

    • miked

i like the way you think, good idea

  • Cos

Once again, the ‘Nanny-State’ mentality of, “Oh, the government knows what’s better for you than you do!”. This is yet another brick in the bulding of a dictatorship in the City. I can’t believe that some people don’t see this as the government telling you what you can or can’t have to eat. My God in Heaven…! Yes, it seems like a good idea… But where will it end? I get my 3 children fast food meals maybe once every couple of months. I give it to them as a treat – not on a regular basis. That works fine for me – and they enjoy it. Would they have more if I let them? Of course… But that is where parenting comes into play. Teach them that they can have the occassional treat. Like anything else in life, everything is good, in moderation. Just don’t tell me I can’t!

  • duckandcover

Now everyone’s one fries short of a happy meal!

  • Midwest Jim

    This is only the beginning.

When the cost of Obamacare spirals out of control – as it most surely will, then that will be the excuse to control ALL food purchases by EVERYONE – not just kids.

Have a bit of a cholesterol problem but want to perhaps enjoy a nice steak dinner with family or friends?? Sorry – no red meat for you – better choose oatmeal for dinner instead.

Sound far fetched? Hardly – the technology for this already exists. All you would need to do is issue a National ID card that would be required for all food purchases at stores or restaurants. (Trust me – the Liberals will have a LOT of uses for this card – besides just food purchases). You could program anyone’s card with government recommended restrictions based on what their government provided healthcare will approve. Submit and obey – it’s for your own good after all…………

    • TWRauch

I am sure they are countless do-gooders out there that would say you’re off your rocker and just a teabagger Jim. However, one only has to actually contemplate this NY story and the San Francisco story, and then conjur up an image of Nancy Pelosi strolling across the mall in Washington DC with the giant gavel in her hand to know that you are SPOT-ON. Here’s hoping that the Midwest can resist the nannystate mentality affecting the bookends along either coast. However, when you take a look at eastern Iowa, Minnesota, and Missouri, there seems a sense of inevitability that the nannystate robots are on a relentless march to turn us all into the former Eastern Bloc.

  • lee

its not the Happy Meal stupid get rid of HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP from sodas and other drinks that the FDA says is good for you they wont because there in bed with the corn producers obesity will be down within two years if this is done

  • redistribute my work ethic

Normal working people can eat high calorie foods because they need the extra calories. Of course, Comrie and his constituents would know nothing about that.

  • welfare is slavery

Maybe if they had to do some form of work in order to eat, they wouldn’t be wasting their money at McDonalds.

  • A. Gray

Leroy Comrie is a Fat Ass himself, let’s see him know off a few before telling anyone else how to eat!

    • A. Gray

      Sorry, knock off a few!

  • Mark

I live in San Francisco. The nanny state has invaded so many aspects of life here that I don’t even feel like I live in a free city, state, or country anymore. For a while I occasionally visited NYC to, among other things, remind myself of what freedom and fun were like, but since Bloomberg it has become as bad as SF, so I rarely visit now. Both cities are now hopeless. As soon as I can figure out how and where, I plan to move somewhere else.

    • dave

Your welcome to come to Texas. We will be our own country soon enough.

      • Nora-Adrienne Deret

Which is why it is called the Republic of Texas

      • Midwest Jim

As a fellow Texan now, I 2nd your offer to Mark. Heck – we already have a Texas flag with experience flying over an independent country. Talk about “Back to the Future”.

      • DonnaEverywhere

Oh Dave. That would ROCK! LOL. But Texas does have its own problems–mmm, maybe West Texas where I can see’em coming for miles! :-)

      • Richard

A whole ‘nother country… I’m in New Mexico. Can we join with you to become a new republic?

      • David Arseneau

Dave, you have no right to invite this pathetic creature to Texas. Who in their right mind lives in San Francisco and visits NYC to find the “real” world? ( Besides, only a Yankee would call himself “dave”.) And besides all that, it is “You’re” welcome. Jeez, don’t they teach you people anything?

      • Phil

Im trying to get a job there, now that you bring it up, just for that reason..

    • Kit

You’re more than welcome in Oklahoma – low cost of living & safe neighborhoods…

  • Lovemcdonalds

Amazing. I grew up in a poor neighborhood with 2 McDonalds in walking distance, ate happy meals occasionaly, and never had a health issue because of it. Maybe Comrie has no self control and doesn’t belong where he is. He believes that because he is weak, we all are.

  • Mark Matis

And of course the New York pigs will be glad to enforce this. May they rot where they belong for what they have done to this country!

  • Venge

It’s partly that, maybe, but mostly that people no longer want responsibility for their own lives. This lawmaker is, as he said, an example, but not just of obesity. He is the quintessence of the problem: a person who isn’t happy with himself and wants the government to take his life over and “make it better”. Present company mostly excluded, I’m sure (since this is drudge traffic now), the vast majority of us no longer want responsibility. That’s why we elected Mr. Change: he said he’d make it better for us. That’s why the communist regimes’ oppressed citizens and survivors laugh at us when we clamor for socialism. The sad truth is, too many of us now think it’s a good thing. We’re done for.

    • Simon Church

I wish you were incorrect, but sadly you are not. This used to be a hard working mostly ethical country, but now it is on it’s last legs. We can hope for the best, that people will straighten up and try to take us back to when a person’s word was their bond and people wanted to work hard and earn an honest living. But I doubt it will happen, America will become the worst of the third world nations, especially under our Party Hardy in Chief.

    • ByteRider

Well put, Venge, very very well put.

Speaking of Oppression, you did hear about the Health Department in California banning perfumes, fatty foods [at lunches], etc.? This is where it starts.

It ends, sadly, at the end of a barrel.

    • mark

Good comments. The thought that came to my mind is that the family is so broken down now that many people seem to want the government to be Daddy or Mommy. They won’t take responsibility for their own behavior which also leads to lawyers getting into the action with lawsuits.

Your kid is fat? It just can’t be because you stuffed his/her face with burgers and ice cream. It must be that evil empire McDonalds tricking you into spending your money on a Happy Meal. Call Daddy Senator and he’ll fix it for you with a set of laws. Then call a lawyer and (s)he’ll sue for millions because you were coerced into buying the aforementioned Happy Meal. You’ll be set for life with money to use for further gluttony. The price I pay gets jacked up to cover your lawsuit monies. And now businesses have yet another set of laws to be followed.

The wheel just keeps on spinning ….

  • jnsesq

“Comrie”? I believe you meant “Commie.” After all, Liberalism is simply Communism served by the drink. — P. J. O’Rourke

  • TWRauch

Please, if you are a New Yorker outraged about government nannystate laws in New York, please please please stay there and vote in sensible people to stop this nonsense. But please do not give up and move to a more conservative state, we’re doing our best to avoid voting in politicians like this in the first place.

    • NYupstater

They come to upstate NY to escape the mess they made in the city, and immediately try to change our area into the cesspool that they came from.

      • TWRauch

Exactly. I ‘feel your pain’ upstater.

  • Douglas Ortiz

Your tax dollars at work! Is this moron councilman getting a paycheck or an invoice?

  • thomazo

That’s right, Happy Meals may make you fat. Walking in front of a car may kill you as well. This is a surprise info to whom exactly?

  • Stop2think

I am not from NY so I Googled the genius Comrie to see what he looked like. Ever see Fat Albert? Then you saw Comrie. Are you kidding me? THIS man is going to lecture me on how I feed my kids when he cannot even control his own weight? Liberal mantra: do as I say not as I do.

  • Bill

Give me a break, lets ban a happy meal because a parent doesnt have enough control over their child to say “hey, I said no, and thats the end of it”. Don’t blame Mc D’s because you can’t control your kid or parent.

  • bobbyhoying

So what exactly is the problem with shutting down government? In New York it would enable little kids to enjoy what kids in other parts of the country enjoy, without some food Nazi telling them what to eat.

  • IiswhatIis

Maybe, Mr. Comrie, you should concentrate on getting they babies daddies some jobs. Complain about them being poor and then try to remove a low cost food source, what a moron. At least McDonalds appears to want to fight it.
