NYC Councilman Leroy Comrie Proposes Bill Banning ‘Happy Meals’

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — San Francisco’s already done it, and now New York may follow suit. New York City Councilman Leroy Comrie thinks the city should consider a ban on “Happy Meals” and similar fast food promotions aimed at kids unless those meals meet certain nutritional standards.

1010 WINS’ John Montone reports: Taking The Happy Out Of Happy Meals?

Comrie has fought the battle of the bulge himself.

“As you know, and I’m an example, nearly one-third of all children in New York City and throughout the United States are either overweight or obese,” Comrie said.

Comrie planned to introduce his own bill Wednesday that would essentially rewrite what could currently be considered a “Happy Meal.” The bill would require establishments that offer toys with food make sure the meals are 500 calories or less and have low fat and low sodium totals.

Penalties would be steep: between $200 to $2,500 for repeat restaurant offenders who use toys to sell unhealthy meals.

Comrie said fast food restaurants know exactly what they’re doing.

“It comes as no surprise that these ads and meals are also targeted in low income and minority neighborhoods that are already at risk for childhood obesity. These are the same communities that have limited access to supermarkets, limited access to healthy food options,” Comrie said.

In a statement, Mason Smoot, vice president and general manager for McDonald’s in the New York Metro Area said, “Our Happy Meals make it easier for families to choose the right foods in portions just for kids. We provide options for our customers and trust them to make the decisions that are right for their families. Politicians should too.”

Do you side with Councilman Comrie? Should Happy Meals be banned? Let us know below…

What’s next? Is the government going to tell us what toilet paper we have to use? Wake up America! Our government is making its way into areas of our lives where it dosen’t belong. If I want to eat or buy a Happy Meal for my children, is up to me and me only!

The problem is parents thinking they can feed their children that junk evey day.because it’s cheap and easy………..

They have no legal right to stick their whiny, ignorant, anti-American, weasel, liberal noses in McDonald’s business.

  8. LastExit says:

but feel free to enter the country illegally and not pay taxes, or join a gang, rob seniors or become a crooked politician but DO NOT EAT THAT!!! NYC SUCKS!! I WANT OUT OF THIS 3RD WORLD SEWER.

      That was BREATHTAKING Scott!!!!

  9. mjb says:

Maybe if ppl would educate themselves on just what goes into the “food” in a happy meal they would stop buying it. If they did, trust me they wouldn’t want to eat it ever again! Let the free market work for itself…supply and demand.

  10. tnmccoy says:

To follow logically, the government will next attack our dress. Since top styles cost so much as to make it impossible for poor people to buy them, they should be outlawed due to the infliction of low esteem on some people. This will lead to Big Brother style clothing where we all look the same. See! Nobody can be jealous and the Government fat cats can be happy and move on to other arenas.

He has no discipline, therefore we need to regulate everyone.
Where is this in the founding fathers thoughts. Did the constitution really
intend to take away every right and responsibility

  13. Deverill says:

Funny, Google finds no less than 9 health food stores in Harlem… which neighborhood is Comrie talking about? By the way, all the McDonalds are on the edge of Harlem, not internal to it. Looks like he’d know his city better, especially if he’s on a crusade to help out the poor people who don’t have healthy choices!

  14. Early Ardmore says:

Happy Meals aren’t the problem, McDonald’s is the problem. People that think this is food think MSG is a vitamin.

    1. Bones says:

Happry Meals aren’t the prblem. McDonald’s isn’t the problem.

      People are the problem.

    2. MichaelH says:

I suggest you don’t have any more “happy meals”. Gawd, what tripe. “People are the problem”!!! Absolute unadulterated bull.

    3. Scott Shapiro says:

So, what you’re saying is that McDonald’s holds people down and forces them to consume their product, which no one has ever claimed is healthy or good for you. And apparently in your world Early Ardmore, people are totally incapable of making choices on their own we should have some fat-assed, 350 pound New York City Councilman come to our rescue against the evil corporate interests of fast food restaraunts like McDonald’s? Is that what you’re saying? Is that why McDonald’s is the problem? Or is it more likely that people like you and this rotund glutton of a Councilman who has no selfcontrol nor ability to self-monitor what he shoves into his face by the shovelful just can’t be bothered to accespt the blame for your own condition? Indeed.

    4. SCALL says:

People are only half the problem. Government is the other half.

    5. ChicketNuggets says:

OK, I eat in McDonald’s when I have only 30 minutes between one job and another! It’s fast, too expensive, but safer than carrying an unrefrigerated sandwich around for 6 hours! At home, I cook my veggies and bake my own bread. Even if I ate there 7 days a week, though, that would be MY problem, MY responsibility, not McDonald’s! Og course, I wouldn’t fit through their door either …

  15. rexxhavikk says:

They ought to ban unhappy a*******’s and idiots from politics

  16. Zip says:

Wake up New York. Pretty soon we will all be sent to one giant day care with the Politicians feeding us and making us exercise. They have overreached in a grossly insulting way. Leave us alone to make our own decisions. If the Politicians don’t like what we choose I suggest THEY move to another state.

  17. Dave says:

  18. Disco says:

Easy way to get around it. Buy a Happy Meal and get a toy for $.01

  19. geo says:

So Councilman Comrie, whats your excuse for being a greasy fat pig?Just googled your pic man.holy sh.t.

    1. G. Mibalzitch says:

Kind of like how Michelle Obama tries to control what we eat, all the while whacking back ribs, lobster and fried shrimp with her hubby the “Vacationer-in Chief”

      Hypocrisy…Thy name is LIBERAL

  20. firedup49 says:

Better BAN the Dems and the people that came up with this lame idea. Michelle Obama and her food police should mind their own business, and get out of peoples lives..

  21. Ghostsouls says:

OMG are you kidding me, has anyone googles a picture of New York City Councilman Leroy Comrie? He looks like he swallowed 2 dozen happy meals. He looks to weigh over 300 lbs……let’s ban the things he eats….. obesity is a crime now isn’t it?

    1. Loretta says:

Maybe he ate too many of his children’s toys?

  22. buckeyejim says:

How about goverment staying out of my life…..I as a parent will make the call on what my kids eat. you feed your kids . i’ll feed mine.

  23. Ghostsouls says:

If I was the CEO of McDonalds, I would MOVE my businesses OUT of any area that wanted to do this. Let the city suffer an economic loss. The real estate tax, the expense of the utilities paid to the city, the sales taxes, the employment of it’s citizens…. That is a lot of restaurants for them to lose, and a lot of income to do without. McDonalds , pays millions of dollars in taxes every year to the cities they are in. Once they started moving out of these kind of places….they would stop trying to bully them and the Americans who patronize them. Quit trying to parent American children, that is what they have parents for. You cannot legislate good parenting.

  24. the Carpathian says:

Your opinion box on whether we should ban happy meals is misleading. The first and third choices are the same.

#1 says to ban the happy meal as bad for us.
#2 says not to ban them … just change them into something else.

Isn’t taking something and making mandatory major changes just another way of saying “ban it?” After all, what is left isn’t a “happy Meal.” But of course, that is the Liberal Democrat way of accomplishing things: redefine your terms until they match what you want to demand and then tell everyone that unless the item fits the )new) definition, it cannot be sold under tht name.

  25. outta there says:

I think you all have a worst problem – your toddlers are wandering around the streets alone and stopping at MackyDo’s for a snack-attack with a toy. Guess your ‘Headstart’ program is not educating these toddlers in proper nutrition. I think you all need to be going after the parent(s) for letting these little guys out on their own and for letting the kiddies blow their money on ‘unhealthy’ food. Oh, you also need to go after all the little stores with all the cookies, chips, snacks, candy, soda – – once you kill happy meals, the little kiddies will be hitting there to get their fix of unhealthy food!

  26. Gabriel says:

It’s not the food, it’s their lifestyle. This generation is being raised by PC’s, DVDs, Gameboys and nintendo DS. It was bad enough when kids got raised by TV, but those kids STILL played outside. It’s the final step in dumbing down our nation. The liberals don’t want them fat (that costs $$$$), they just want them stupid. No one has sought to curb the ADDICTION of video gaming…they worry about content, but not volume.

  27. Jackie says:

We can’t even get the Atlanta Police to arrest the criminals….lol, these cities obviously have too much tax money!

  28. Mary Wright Pippert says:

Don’t the police in NYC have better things to do?

    1. jinx says:

      Yes-raping drunk women.

  29. Sam says:

Knowing that NYC is full of crooks of all stripes ,it wont be long before they see Black Market Happy Meal pushers! What a bunch of busybodies!

  30. Acerdude says:

  31. Rick says:

This is a nice way of saying the parents in NYC are incompetent and can’t be trusted. It’s a parental problem not restaurant problem. We have happy meals in our town and no rampant obesity problems here.

  32. DanJ says:

What does ole Leroy look like? Is he a fat SOB?

  33. JeffT says:

Future scenario: You’re sitting at the dinner table. There’s a knock at the door. Is it the Jehovah’s Witness tandem, again? No, it’s the Food Police. They have picked up the scent of a steak wafting from your house. They inform you that you must turn over the steak, they are not legal, too fattening and they cause heart disease. You have 5 minutes to hand it over. What do you do? Crazy? Think the unthinkable with these social engineers.

    1. G. Mibalzitch says:

That’s not as far-fetched as you may think. I predicted a “fat tax” years ago, and it’s not far off

  34. Henry says:

last I checked, veggies, fruuit and other healthy food was available in all grocery stores. If you go to a fast food restaurant, because you want to, or its cheaper than “healthy” food or your kids like a cheese burger more than bean sprouts, and broccoli? Everyo9ne makes their own choices, because some make bad choices does not mean the government should step in and take the choices away from everyone. I am sure there are loots of people that eat “unbhealthy” foods and still live healthy happy lives. Its aways so easy to blame your problem opn someone else. Take responsability for your own life and leave the re4st of us alone.

  35. libclubber says:

Yeah kids are fat, you aborted all the thin ones!!!

  36. FedUp389 says:

NYC must be a veritable paradise!
No more crime, drugs or homeless folks.
The budget must be in balance and a surplus forcast for the next 10 years.

In other words, all the hard issues have been resolved.

That’s the only way to explain why the City Council would even comsider such nonsense.

To all the overreaching governmental masters who whish to run our lives, fix the problems we haired you to solve.

Happy meals aren’t one of them!

  37. MomMadnessHTR says:

I have three little girls and they get Happy Meals once in a while as a treat. If you dont use McDonalds as your personal chef…then you dont need these bans

  38. Bruce Baker says:

    Personal responsibility? What’s that?

The Libs think that we’re all to stupid to take care of ourselves. While they have a First Amendment right to hold and express that opinion, they think that it’s the government’s job to pass laws to force us to “act more intelligently”. I have a big problem with that: “A government powerful enough to give you everything you need is powerful enough to take away everything that you have”.

Another factor that contributes to this trend is carrer polliticians. George Washington only accepted the Presidency because he felt that he couldn’t trust anyone else to do the job AND THEN STEP DOWN. He served his terms and then went back to farming.

When your life’s ambition is to stay in office for life, you have a constant need to prove to your constituents that you’re “doing a good job”. Thus the tsumami of needless, nanny state laws. We need more like George Washington who will serve only long enough to get a specific job done (Fiscal Reform!!!) and then go back to work or to enjoying life.

  39. JEFF GORDON says:

What a moron !! If you want to fight obesity, take out the burgers, fries and soda – ONLY the toy should be in the happy meal !!

  40. JEFF GORDON says:

What a moron !! If you want to fight obesity, take out the burgers, fries and soda and ONLY have the toy in the happy meal !!

  41. Susan says:

What in the he$$ are low-income people doing ……eating out any way? My parents where average middle class working people. We NEVER ate out. Now my parents are now in their mid 70’s, are millionaires, still get up every morning to go out into the fields to tend to their cows, etc…..and I am no worse for wear, by NOT eating out as a chld.

Must not have happy children. All children must be serious in a proper Socialist mindset. Any children found to be happy will be sent for reeducation.

Anyone attempting to make children happy will be severely punished.

  44. Reality Sandwich says:

    Seig Heil, Food Police.

  45. Kayleigh says:

This is ridiculous. The government ought to worry more about inspecting the meat packing facilities and chicken/cow concentration camps instead of telling people what ot feed their kids. Ban genetically modified food, not Happy Meals. This is supposed to be a free country, McDonald’s can sell Happy Meals if they want. If someone wants to feed that trash to their children, that’s on them. Personally, I find it to be repulsive. Buy organic, grass-fed, free-range, LOCAL-GO NATURAL! There’s a lot of studies that show the link between GM beef and various cancers. Support your local farms and co-ops, that’s how we can get out from under the government’s thumb, contribute to the economy AND keep our families healthy. BUY LOCAL!!!! 🙂

  46. Voice of Reason says:

Stop and think about the big picture for a minute: Cultural issues simply can’t be solved with government intervention. All the legislation in the world won’t fundamentally change the way people think. It’s the least efficient approach and it only lops off the head of the weed instead of pulling it by the roots.

Incidentally, I’m very glad my family no longer lives in metro New York. New Hampshire is a far better place to live for the time being. Live free or die.

  47. Chuck kaye says:

There go the toys in Cracker jack next. San Francisco and New York deserve the stupidity that they profess.

  48. Lee says:

Would you like a toy with your Happy Meal purchase for $0.01?

  49. spock says:

Why not instead of going against our Constitution, why not push to have more food stores and help bring down the price of heathly food such as vegatables, oh that’s right Obamanomics is causing the food price hikes!!
