NYC Councilman Leroy Comrie Proposes Bill Banning ‘Happy Meals’

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — San Francisco’s already done it, and now New York may follow suit. New York City Councilman Leroy Comrie thinks the city should consider a ban on “Happy Meals” and similar fast food promotions aimed at kids unless those meals meet certain nutritional standards.

1010 WINS’ John Montone reports: Taking The Happy Out Of Happy Meals?

Comrie has fought the battle of the bulge himself.

“As you know, and I’m an example, nearly one-third of all children in New York City and throughout the United States are either overweight or obese,” Comrie said.

Comrie planned to introduce his own bill Wednesday that would essentially rewrite what could currently be considered a “Happy Meal.” The bill would require establishments that offer toys with food make sure the meals are 500 calories or less and have low fat and low sodium totals.

Penalties would be steep: between $200 to $2,500 for repeat restaurant offenders who use toys to sell unhealthy meals.

Comrie said fast food restaurants know exactly what they’re doing.

“It comes as no surprise that these ads and meals are also targeted in low income and minority neighborhoods that are already at risk for childhood obesity. These are the same communities that have limited access to supermarkets, limited access to healthy food options,” Comrie said.

In a statement, Mason Smoot, vice president and general manager for McDonald’s in the New York Metro Area said, “Our Happy Meals make it easier for families to choose the right foods in portions just for kids. We provide options for our customers and trust them to make the decisions that are right for their families. Politicians should too.”

Do you side with Councilman Comrie? Should Happy Meals be banned? Let us know below…

If you think this is crazy, wait until the government is paying for everyone’s health care. The government will use that as justification for forcing us to live healthy life styles, as they define it, in order to save the government money, only they’ll tell us that they are doing it for our own good. We’ll all be on forced diets to maintain the government prescribed weight. We’ll have lists of government approved foods. We’ll have an army of food police and food snitches. We’ll file daily reports on the amount of exercise we get. If we don’t do enough we’ll be punished by having our ration of sweets cut back. Ahh, the world run by liberals, where our lives will be controlled by all knowing, all caring, all beneficent pinheads.

WHAT ! government program ever worked ? the gov is the problem ! not the solution !

  4. leeuniverse says:

I doubt that slimeball lawmaker got fat eating Happy Meals. I bet he got for for simply overeating and not getting proper exercise, just like I DID the two times I’ve gotten overweight. He ATE TWO MUCH CARBOHYDRATES…!!! Any nutritionist will tell you that’s primarily how weight gain occurs. Not only that, but I was actually “eating healthy” when I got fat both times. I wasn’t eating McDonald’s nor junk food. Happy Meals are also already nutritious.

    Liberals are ignorant Facsists…! ;(

  5. Jim Bryant says:

These are the same people who tell us out of one side of their mouths that we’re a nation of overweight slobs who eat too much and out of the other side of their mouths cry that we can’t cut the budget by a measly 2% because if we do people will starve to death. Their real motive has nothing to do with our well being. It has to do with their desire for power and control.

Liberals intentionally kill more children than ten million Happy Meals ever could

Don’t let these school kids have happy meals with too much fat.

The Nanny State mentality at its finest. Tell people how to eat, tell parents how to raise their kids, tell businesses how to operate, penalize them for success.

Three words…READ THE ARTICLE. It’s not banning “Happy Meals”, it’s simply limiting the number of calories in a kids meal that comes with a toy. No one is stopping you from buying your fat ass kid an adult meal or buying 16oz of ice cream to go with their kids meal. The vast majority of the people here need to quit regurgitating Fox News buzz words and attempting to apply them to mundane topics. You drama queens need to open a dictionary, it’s not terrorism or fascism or communism or socialism or any other ism. It’s a tiny measure to hopefully prevent large corporations from profiting from filling YOUR KIDS with GARBAGE FOOD.

    1. GuyfromIllinois says:

Why should New York fine the food establishment? The parent is to blame because their child is a lard ass. What is next? Should New York fine Sony because they build the Playstation and that causes kids to sit on their fat ass all day in the summer and play games when they should be outside running around. Which kid is fatter? Child A goes to McDonalds and eats a 1000 calorie happy meal and then goes home and plays Super Mario Brothers for five hours. Child B goes to McDonalds and eats a 1000 calorie happy meal and then goes home and runs around playing in the yard for 5 hours?

So who is to blame? McDonalds, Sony, or the stupid ass parent who SHOULD tell the kid what they are ordering and should send their child outside to play. But the government knows best.

You are the type of idiot that just sets back and gets taken over by those who will imprison you or kill you if you do not comply. Stay in Canada.

    3. SickofLiberalWhining says:

Communism: Any theory or system of common ownership of property
Fascism: A system of government characterized by dicatatorship, belligerent nationalism and racism or militarism
Socialism: a theory of the ownership and operation of the means of production and distribution by society with all members sharing in the work and products.
Terrorism: The use of force or threats to intimidate, especially as a political policy.

There is no way the government or any governing body should tell me what I should and should not feed my kids or myself. This is purely my decision and for someone to try to threaten fines for the business which is selling me, out of my own choice, any product, good bad or indifferent to my health, this is a form of terrorism based upon the basic definition of the term.
We are not regurgitating Fox News buzz words. We are simply stating facts as we see them as Americans. Our government was not put into place to limit our freedoms but rather to secure and defend our freedoms. Is something like this defending or securing our freedoms? I think not.
Considering that your name states “guyfromcanadia”, I think that you have no place by which to tell us what we should say and what we shouldn’t say. Considering that most of the eastern canadians were actually people who didn’t want to fight in the revolutionary war, stay on your side of the border!

    7. guyfromcanadia says:

With the obesity rate as high as it is in the U.S. clearly many parents aren’t capable of making the right decisions. You need as much help as you can get. The portion sizes between the 2 countries is amazing. Did you know that if you supersize a MacDonalds meal in Canada that it’s the same size as your regular meal? Your portions are enormous!

SickofLiberalWhining, thanks for the definitions. This topic applies to NONE OF THEM! Again, they aren’t trying to tell you not to stuff your kids face with food. They are limiting the calories in ONE MEAL TYPE. You’ve got the definitions down pat, now lets work on comprehension.
I love how limiting a happy meal to 500 calories can incense people to a point they will believe this sort of intervention will lead to government sponsored imprisonment, torture, and murder. Please stop watching the fear mongers on TV and think for yourself. Do any of you truly think the Rep’s are looking out for the little guy? Or the Dem’s for that matter? NEWSFLASH, NO GOVERNMENT ANYWHERE WILL LOOK OUT FOR AVERAGE JOE WHEN THERE IS CORPORATE MONEY EXCHANGING HANDS. Wake up already.

    8. TomB says:

As your comment to your comment shows, you do not have the intellectual capacity to understand what so many are putting up IN PLAIN ENGLISH to rebut you. “Corporate money changing hands”???? We are nowhere near that level. If you don’t want your kid to eat a Happy Meal, don’t drive the car you paid for with money from your own wallet, filled with gas that you put in it with money from your own wallet, to McDonald’s and give them money from your own wallet to buy the damn food! Please explain to us simpletons who are just not smart enough to understand what you are saying just how “corporate money changing hands” affects whether or not I make a personal transaction with a single McDonald’s franchise?

    9. TomB says:

Oh, and I would be willing to lay odds that you consider yourself to be “pro choice”

    10. Another guy from Canada says:

No, it’s not communism or fascism — it’s statism: the belief that the solution to any problem is for the government to pass a law or ordnance or in some other way to regulate people’s lives for what some politician or “expert” thinks is their own good. I’m in favour of informing people about calories, fat content, etc.; but then leave them alone to decide what they want. If parents decide that the Happy Meal has too many calories, let them order something else or go to another restaurant. If enough people do that, McDonald’s will change their recipe.

    11. guyfromcanadia says:

AnotherGuy, I agree with you in principle but the stats in many states/provinces show that parents are not making the best choices for their kids. What an adult puts in their mouth is up to them, but kids have no idea what the nutritional value of what they’re eating. At least give them a fighting chance.

  26. Tom Troll says:

It’s Cadbury’s fault liberals are diabetic. Ban Cadbury’s because liberals cannot control themselves.

It’s Absolut’s fault liberals are alcoholic. Ban Absolut because liberals cannot control themselves.

It’s MacDonald’s fault liberals are obese. Ban MacDonalds because liberals cannot control themselves.

It’s someone else’s fault liberals have some other problem. Ban that, too, because liberals cannot control themselves.

  27. Mandy says:

This plan is about to backfire and make McDonald’s more money. What will happen is that parents will start buying two meals for their kids, one for the toy and one for the junk food their kids will actually eat.

  28. DeadGuy says:

  31. Nicastro says:

Well a poll like this one will always be skewed because people are always worried about too much control, yet that’s the same people that cause the cost of health insurance to rise because the are all future cardiac patients and their children eating these unhealthy fast food meals are really following in mommy and daddy’s footsteps and joining them.

  37. Alex Powietrzynski says:

Unfortunately our city council again and again seeks to take away our God given right to choose. Instead, they seek to impose laws they believe are “correct”. They seemingly do not understand that choices are tough and should be tough, but they should be ours to make. I am a New Yorker. Rarely do I purchase food from McDonalds, but that is my choice. I also don’t smoke. But I will not sit quietly while the rights of those who frequent McDonalds and the like or like to smoke in the park because I know that eventually the repressive NYC government will seek to take away something that is more precious to me – perhaps it will be my life – who will stand up for me then?
And if you would like to argue that things like salt, sugar, fatty foods, guns, cigarettes are harmful and should therefore be restricted and/or outlawed, I would like to ask where do you stop? Water is dangerous. Perhaps we should outlaw pools in New York. Carbs are dangerous as they lead to obesity. Perhaps we should outlaw bagels. Is Pizza ok? What about alcohol? Should we bring back prohibition? That worked so well last time we tried…

  38. Spook says:

I think it’s quite funny. You all cheered when they did it to smokers. Now it’s your tun. You deserve it.

I would note that not only is this child not fat, her hair is nicely combed and styled, her clothes are clean and pressed, and she is wearing some cute earrings. Sure looks like a kid with a parent who cares about her to me! I am sick of all this talk that minorities can’t even figure out how to care for their children. This child looks as if she has a very nice life, and she looks happy to be enjoying her happy meal.

  43. Lee says:

Use your brains. People get to choose what to eat. No one is forcing parents to choose to buy Happy Meals! I don’t want the government dictating what I can buy or eat. I don’t buy McDonald’s food because I don;t want to. I like their coffee but that is it. I used to have them substitute a cheese sandwich and apples and milk for my child’s meal. Now they make you get the fries and I say just keep them. I go somewhere else if I don’t like the food. Toys can be bought without the food.(and I occasionally do that). It is insulting to think a law has to be passed!! (because people can’t choose healthy for their kids) crazy

  44. ex-Boston Bill says:

Here’s a great idea. A means by which to generate revenue and to gather more control over the population. Issue an FFL card (not a Federal Firearms License….a Fast Food License) to all who wish to consume any of the multitude of fast food menu choices at all fast food suppliers. Charge an initial fee for the license, say $25.00 per person. Upon ordering any menu item you must present the license. Each time a meal, or any item, is purchased, the clerk punches one of the spots on your card. The additional cost is “free” money for the state. A “Punch Tax”. By law you are not allowed to consume more than one meal consisting of three items, per two week period. Make it a felony for the consumer, clerk and store with a hefty fine. Think of the revenue!! And how healthy your subjects, I mean, citizens will be!!

For grins and giggles, I actually looked up when Ecclesiastes was thought to have been written.

How about just enforce the laws aready on the books so you could have a safe place to have a store with out being robbed or a safe place like a park where you could take your kids to play? No we want to write new laws to take care of the problems of not enforcing the ones we already have.

  47. Lyte Lee says:

The food police brought to you by idiot libs who want to control everyone and everything.

  48. Soonerdiver says:

Mr. Comrie… if, as you say, the ads are aimed at low income and minority children who don’t have access to supermarkets and nutritional foods then maybe you would be better served to make these things more readily available! I am sure that the majority of those that are “targeted” have cell phones, IPods, etc…

  49. johnmwilliams says:

This is such bs. 500 calories isn’t enough for a growing kid. This nimrod is trying to force what he should be eating as an adult on a diet on kids. Would somebody please educate this idiot? Oh, that’s right–he’s in NYC. This bastion of liberal-think specializes in indoctrination, not education. Perhaps he should get out of “the city” every now and then and actually learn a thing or two?

  50. PDXguy says:
