2 Catholic H.S. Workers Accused Of Having Sex With Students

PARAMUS, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Two men who worked at a Catholic school in New Jersey were behind bars Wednesday, charged with sexual misconduct with female students.

Bergen County prosecutors said the men were chaperones on a 10-day student exchange trip to Germany in February, during which they allegedly had sex with students.

Teacher and football coach Michael Sumulikoski was accused of having sex with one student, while Artur Sopel, 31, vice president of operations, was accused of having sexual relations with two students on the trip.

After the initial allegations were reported, another student came forward and said she also had sex with Sopel last year, authorities said.

In their first appearances since their arrest, both men pleaded not guilty before a judge on Wednesday to charges that they had sex with underage students.

CBS 2 spoke to the suspects’ attorneys on Wednesday.

“I can state categorically that nothing inappropriate, of a sexual nature took place – or any other nature took place – on this class trip to Germany, and he looks forward to confronting his accusers who have made these false allegations,” Sopel’s attorney, Ray Flood, said.

“My client is shocked at what has happened here and what these allegations are,” said Sumulikoski’s lawyer, Robert Galantucci. “I don’t believe that there is any basis for them.”

A spokesman for the Archdiocese of Newark said the teachers have been suspended without pay and won’t be coming back.

Both have been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, while Sopel also faced charges of sexual assault and hindering apprehension.

Parents learning of their arrest were stunned.

“I just heard about it this morning. I am astonished. I am really astonished. I’m just quite upset and concerned now,” said Diane Felder.

Sopel was being held on $225,000 bail, while Sumulikoski was being held on $50,000 bail. They have been ordered to surrender their passports and have no contact with their victims.

Students said the young teachers had a reputation for being outgoing, and even flirty.

“I just see them all the time with them I guess,” said student Louis Carrero.

“I guess that was just their personality. They were always talking to everybody,” said student Anthony Cardetta.

Administrators were spending Wednesday meeting with students.

“Just to reassure them that this is a serious matter. We take everything seriously. We have followed all the procedures in place for reporting and cooperating with the authorities,” said Jim Goodness of the Newark Archdiocese.

you keep thinking these are perfect angels that were wrongly abused. No, they are 18 year old teens that have been sleeping around regardless, but the only difference this time is that an adult and more seriously, a school worker was caught up in it. Its not that they couldn’t call the police, they didn’t want or need to.

Wow, I played soccer with Mike. Terrible.

  3. Jen says:

Innocent until proven guilty everyone out there should keep that in mind…I do not support any alleged behavior but these girls are not considering it rape so they knew full well what they were doing…If they were “mature”enough to have sex then they also should be smart enough to know it is illegal and need to face consequences as well…Watch out for the parents suing and trying to cash in for their child inappropriate behavior…This should be a wake up call for parents…teenagers think there invincible bc they have parents they walk all over…And Paramus Catholic is a money hungry school and that’s all they care about…they are probably so happy to be getting their camera time…and the archdiocese is as corrupt as they come

I’m a former student at pc and I have a sibling there I’ve heard the real story these girls aren’t victims in this case they were out at bars getting drunk plotting about how the wanted to have sexual intimacy with these teachers there no angels they acted inappropriately with comments and suggestions.

Paramus Catholic is a great school, and this incident should not reflect the school. There are so many great teachers, administrators, and staff that are dedicated to their students. I would know; I’ve been attending this school. Never once has a teacher been inappropriate in class or with me. They are there to teach and help us grow into fine adults. And to all the people who think PC is a “joke”, obviously does not care about their school work or academics. I always have an assignment, paper, readings, studying, and homework to do. There is always something I need to do for school in order to maintain my grades. I love this school and will always be a Paladin.

I hate you bung holes who seem to think that prison rape is some how appropriate punishment. It is not.. If you think otherwise, you are a sociopath.

Just as thie diatribe is WAY off subject so are you Keith! Typical American ans yes I said it and I have fought for my right to say it!

Rape is good. Without rape, nobody would have f’d my mother sober. And I wouldn’t be born.

I don’t make this type of comment and my grammar is proper. This is the second such instance in this thread. Others have complained, legitimately, I believe. Someone at CBS needs to check into this.

Better than the high school I worked at. The one girl never even knew who… not hard to fill in the blanks, but nobody’s gonna talk

  13. Jay says:

No, maybe the girls were not victimized. Ask yourself two questions though: Who were the adults? Who were the teachers? TEACHERS SHOULD NOT BE HAVING SEX WITH STUDENTS! I DON’T CARE HOW INSISTENT THE GIRLS WERE. HAVE SOME SELF CONTROL! Did these girls put guns to the teachers’ heads and force them to have sex? I doubt it. Their licenses (if they even have licenses) should be stripped and they should never be allowed to work in another school system.

  14. chris says:

Keith this is not about religion…this case is all about these two people committing crimes against children. Your comment does not connect to the purpose of giving your suggestions as to what punishment should these two child offenders would get…but to destroy the reputation of particular religion is highly insensible.

    1. Anna says:

I agree with you Chris regarding the comment of keith…the report didnt even mentioned that these 2 are catholics…in some places even if youre not a catholic you can still work on that organization…youre comment should be on the acts of these 2 men and not to attack a certain religion…
