NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A Long Island charity will announce the winners of its annual college scholarship this Friday in Babylon.
The charity, Adelante, has handed out over $230,000 in scholarships over the past 18 years to help underprivileged teenagers further their education.

“We also assist them to find additional scholarships to help them be able to make it,” executive director Miriam Garcia said.
The college scholarships are needed more than ever, Garcia said, and this year, 10 high school seniors will receive scholarships worth up to $2,500.
“[Many times] this young person is the first one going to college in their family so certainly we have to work with the family to ease the anxiety,” she said.
The scholarship dinner will take place on April 15 at the Venetian Yacht Club in Babylon at 8 p.m.
