Rockland County’s Nanuet Mall Gets New Lease On Life

NANUET, NY (WCBS 880) – The Nanuet Mall is a ghost town.

Stores are empty. The food court is bare.

But this mall is now on the verge of becoming the latest fashion.

Clarkstown supervisor Alex Gromack says Simon Properties has been in and out of the building department and they’re now planning on demolishing the mall to make way for a new one.

“It’s a win-win for everybody,” says Gromack, who says of the mall right now, “It’s at its lowest point in its history. You could walk around the mall and be the only one in there.”

He says this is just what Clarkstown needs.

“We’re very excited. It’s something that’s going to be very vibrant, and great for business, the tax base,” says Gromack.

Meanwhile, a Simon Properties spokesperson says they don’t want to comment until everything is firm.

But they say they have been looking to redevelop the property for a long time.

The big Palisades Center mall in nearby West Nyack has been major factor in the downfall of the Nanuet Mall.

Rob is correct in saying that the Palisades Mall was not the downfall of the Nanuet Mall. Simon Properties made a decision to let all of their tenants go; they were leasing space to office users at bottom basement prices with limited lease terms. Simon Properties has something in mind, but no one knows what. Now, they have decided to demolish the existing structure, with no statement as to what comes next. We are in a recession. The retail sector has been hit hard. The only announcement they seem to be willing to make according to the Rockland Journal News is that construction won’t begin til 2012 which ironically coincides with the next presidential election. So, I wonder what happens next … Rebuilding or tax grievance?

do we really need another mall 2miles down the road from the other.

Macy’s owns the property . Simon property is the management company

The Palisades mall was not the down fall of Nanuet Mall. Simon Property took too long to do something with the mall way before the recession started. Also Macys they took away STERNS AND ABRAHAM and STRAUS. iF THAT did not happen the mall wouldnt have gone down so bad.Macys is terrible they ruined the retail market from their mergers of their federated stores and May Co Filenes, Hects etc.
