Wilkerson On WFAN: Being Picked By Jets Was 'A Great Feeling'

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) -- Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum, known for wheelin' and dealin' on draft day, stuck to his guns Thursday night and landed Temple defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson with the 30th overall pick.

Wilkerson is the fourth Temple player drafted by the Jets, joining linebacker Mike Stromberg (1967), defensive tackle Joe Klecko (1977) and offensive lineman Dave Yovanovits (2003). He watched the draft with about 80-90 friends and family members at a restaurant in Linden, and got excited when the Jets went on the clock.

"It was just a great feeling," Wilkerson told WFAN's Boomer & Carton Friday morning. "I just know that 30th pick, you know, my name would be called."

Wilkerson rooted for the Giants as a youngster, watching the likes of Michael Strahan and Jessie Armstead lead a dominant defense. Now, he hopes to help the other team in town become even better.

"Growing up I was a Giants fan," he said. "After I got older, I pretty much just became a fan of the game, period."

The incoming rookie said he's happy to line up anywhere for Rex Ryan's high-octane defense.

"I don't really have a preference," Wilkerson said. "Wherever I need to be to help the team."
