N.J. Police: Hide Your Jewelry Elsewhere Besides Your Bedroom

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. (WCBS 880) – As word spreads that a string of burglaries in North Jersey and Rockland County might be the work of the new James Bond gang or an offshoot, Bergen County police are hoping that people will take simple steps to avoid becoming victims.

Englewood Detective Lt. Tim Tarrell said that people must do more than just set their alarms.

"Hide your stuff in non traditional places. Everybody attends to keep their best jewelry in the master bedroom on top of their bureau in the jewelry box. And they come in and that's what they're after. They're after cash and jewelry," Tarrell says.

These burglars often cut the phone lines and even take the safe.

Tarrell said if your jewelry isn't on the dresser, if it's not on the bedroom, the burglars would most likely leave.

"There are a number of items on the market that you can buy like safe books and safe canisters that you can put your jewelry in," Tarrell said. "They want to get in and out in just a few minutes. If they can't find that stash of jewelry, they'll just leave."
