SOUND OFF: Tell Us Your Reaction To Osama Bin Laden’s Death

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – It was news New Yorkers had been waiting almost 10 long years for: Osama bin Laden is dead.

The terrorist leader was shot dead by U.S. Navy SEALs at his compound in Pakistan, where officials said he was hiding in a million-dollar Abbotabad mansion.

Jubilant New Yorkers spontaneously took to the streets at Ground Zero and Times Square Sunday night, waving American flags and chanting “U-S-A! U-S-A.!” It was an unusual moment for the otherwise solemn Ground Zero site: in moments, it became the site of celebration as people began singing the national anthem.

Cliff Lichter, who works in Jersey City, can’t look at the skyline of Lower Manhattan without thinking back to September 11, 2001.

“I saw that they were flying and I saw the second plane crash and it was unbelievable. Still think about it all the time,” he told CBS 2’s Kristin Thorne.

Lichter, however, has found a certain sense of peace about the the tragedy with the death of bin Laden.

“It shows that the United States finally got the job done,” Lichter said.

However, New Yorkers instinctively knew that one man’s death did not suddenly make the world a safe place.

“It’s more than just Osama, it’s a whole group of people that we have to be afraid of,” Vanessa Gil of Long Island told CBS 2′ Don Dahler.

“I think it’s going to get worse. I don’t think that just because you killed him that it’s taking away the problem,” Dana Laven said.

In Brooklyn Heights, people also remembered that fateful day when the view from their windows changed forever.

“I just think something’s missing. It’s sort of the…something you’ve always lived with and all of a sudden, it was gone that day,” one resident said.

Hundreds gathered at Ground Zero following the news. Megan Horan was 13 on September 11, 2001, and had just started high school a few blocks away from Ground Zero.

“It just makes me remember the day, that’s all. When I walk down here normally, I don’t feel any strong emotions,” Horan said, sobbing.

1010 WINS’ John Montone reports: Tears Of Joy At Ground Zero

“It’s good for the world. We took the head off the snake, so to speak,” James Vigliatora said. “It’s a beautiful day to be an American.”

“I remember being 17 and saying, ‘I’ll never forget’ and I’ve never forgotten,” one woman said. “The face of my world changed. I was so relieved. There’s so many people who have been working night and day to find one person and they found him. It’s a positive sign and we’re making progress.”

Sean Sheehan, who comes from a family of firefighters and lost his cousin on 9/11, came to Ground Zero from Rockville Centre the moment he heard the news of bin Laden’s death.

“Before, we were all together for despair and tragedy, now we’re together in unison over a joyful time where someone who caused this pain got what he deserved,” Sheehan said.

“I’m elated. It’s a great victory for the United States and for the civilized world,” Debra Burlingame, co-founder of Families For A Safe and Strong America, told WCBS 880 reporter Peter Haskell.

Burlingame, who lost her pilot brother, Charles, when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon,  said the terror threat does not disappear with bin Laden’s death.

“This is the close of a very big chapter,” Burlingame said. “It doesn’t end it but it’s a great relief.”

Families of the victims of 9/11 have felt a jumble of emotions following the death of bin Laden.

“I just never thought that this kind of closure was in the cards for me. I never thought that we would get justice,” Stacy Pelosi, whose father died at the World Trade Center, said.

Ann Ielpi lost her 29-year-old son, Jonathan, a New York City firefighter who died responding to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

She said bin Laden is “burning in hell right now.”

Katherine Wolf, a classical pianist, died in the Sept. 11 attacks at the World Trade Center just weeks after starting a job with Marsh & McLennan. Her husband, Charles, said he never lost hope that bin Laden would be found.

“We beat them at their own game. We didn’t give up. 10 years,” Wolf said. “This man’s evil energy has been taken off of our planet and God is going to throw his soul into the depths of hell.”

For John Cartier, who lost his brother James in the Twin Towers, bin Laden’s death is bittersweet.

“It’s an emotional roller coaster,” Cartier said. “Him being dead saves other people but it doesn’t bring my brother back. Closure is not the right word for us. Justice is a politician’s word. So this is all about revenge, revenge for the man who murdered my brother.”

Many tears have been shed at Ground Zero over the past decade but Monday morning the site was filled with tears of joy.

“I saw a lot of people really happy that a murderer is dead; someone who took too many lives and lasted too long to get taken care of. He’s gone now,” one man said. “I am so proud of our men and women in uniform.”

“On Sept. 11 this country changed forever and being here this morning gives me hope and belief that we will be that same country we were before Sept. 11,” Bryan Mannix, of Rockville Centre, said.

One person climbed a street sign on Church and Vesey street, waving an American flag.

1010 WINS’ Steve Sandberg reports: Witnessing History At Ground Zero

A similar scene played out in Times Square, with some celebrating bin Laden’s death by carrying posters.

“It’s really a terrific day for not just America but for the world. To have this cancer pulled from us is the right thing,” said Guy Madsen, 49, who drove to the city from Clifton, N.J., when he heard of bin Laden’s death. “This is judgment day, and we’re winning.”

prove to me that was him and not obama looking like a hero to get re-elected. a burial at sea within ten hours of killing him?????? looks a little funny to me.

  • Madeline

It would be nice to see his body to really ease the minds of the people who don’t believe he has been killed, but if he was killed and it was on 5-2-2011, if you add these numbers the outcome is 9/11. Ironic he died on a sum of the day he caused so much destruction and sorrow. Lets bring our troops back home and may God Bless America, and hope that there is an end to so much innocent deaths.

I would hate to be in Osama bin Laden’s place as he stands in the judgement court in heaven. Unlike judges here on earth, who can make mistakes, the Judge up there will never. Osama will reap what he sowed.

He sowed murder – he’ll reap murder. Hell. Second death.

But is he truly dead? I hope so, but…

    • Rodin

If the judge is Allah, he’s a martyr in heaven cavorting with 600 virgins.

  • Trish

Come on everyone….did anyone see a pic of him with a hole in his head? I just don’t think he is dead. No Body?? Dumped in the ocean?? Why and how can you believe this nonsense?

  • Trish

I just can’t belive he’s dead….no body?? Dumped in teh ocean?? Come on now….

There are 809 or more Muslim fanatics vying to take his place.

What a great day for America and the world. I understand he was buried at sea. I hope the sharks dont eat him because they will get violently sick, but it would be nice to see them rip him apart.

I mourn for my species. How any of you can think the death of anyone is a cause for celebration is beyond me. Bin laudin has been used as an excuse for america to go to war. So what excuse is next ? Kill all the muslims ? Then we’d be REALLY safe huh ? Then who do we get rid of ? Christians might be next. Hindus. It’s kinda funny because I’m an atheist and I should be FOR all this killing eh ? I just can’t imagine your religious icons, deities, what have you, partying over the death of a human being no matter how mentally unstable his brain chemistry made him. But then, this isn’t really about religion, or oil, or money,….it’s about control of the population. Until you people understand that and refuse to play…we will never have world peace. If everyone just put down their guns, started helping each other build their lives back, and lived together in peace refusing to fight anymore…then we would have peace. Maybe our real enemy is testosterone. Could it be that simple ?

    • Rodin

I agree 100%. Get rid of religion, get rid of conflict.

    • Krystal G Potter

Actually…instead of testoerone…I should have simply said ” ourselves:. STOP HATING EACH OTHER ! Can’t you see diversity as beauty ?

      • Krystal G Potter

Oh and for anyone who is going to cry…” well what about the people who got killed in the trade towers ?! ” Ok between that and a few thousand deaths of soldiers in the war…… we have thousands of americans dead compared to over 1.5 million muslims dead. That’s not a war it’s a slaughter. yah, pat yourselves on the back and throw genocide parties.

Man after 10 years and me being at 9/11/, and seeing people jump out the window first hand and being there until the second building fell and walking over the bridge; (I think I still have the white Calvin Kline teeshirt I wore that day.) I’m proud to be an American.

Looking for some good New York celebration?
Listen to some fine New Yorkers sing the national anthem in the subway.
This brings up such deep, complicated emotions. But the celebration–it comes from the heart here in NYC.

  • mj

first off i never believe a single thing the gov’t has to say . i believe he’s dead but i also believe that he killed himself when he knew capture was imminent. lets face it , the biggest prize in the world would be to have taken him alive and i believe that was their first intent . what would have been more humiliating for him than to be taken alive and brought back to the us to be made a spectacle of ? i think he saw the writing on the wall and also knew if he killed himself he’d be viewed as a martyr. the us also knew that therefore they would never allow him to be viewed that way. second , i think the celebrations in the streets are disgraceful. no different than when the people of Afghanistan danced in the streets following 9/11. i guess i just expect better of the american people . i’m surprised that people here didn’t run out into the streets firing guns in the air .

    • mj

as i stated i don’t believe a word the govt says … an example … no american casualties .. ok fine but now they are saying we lost a helicopter during the operation . can someone explain to me how you lose a chopper without a casualty ?

      • mj

well according to search results i checked it takes a minimum of 72 hours . btw rodent … what exactly do you know about dna testing besides what you’ve seen on csi where they get it in 20 min ?

      • Rodin

You need to learn something about the types of DNA and testing before you mouth off.

      • mj

ANOTHER thing i’m just curious about is the SPEED at which they obtained the DNA results. doesn’t it take awhile to process and obtain results ? even in major crime cases they don’t get them immediately.

      • Trish

Very good point…well said!! I just don’t belive that he is dead though. Why are there no pictures or proof? Why would the US say the dumped his body in the ocean??? Doesn’t sound true to me. Sounds to me like our government, who after 10 years couldn’t find him…LOL!!, wants Obama to look better than he has been looking as a president… how sad to play with the hearts and minds of all the Mother’s, fathers, sisters and brothers, and children murdered on 9/11

  • Rodin

ENOUGH! Change of subject needed. Bye.

  • bin die laden

bye bye so long farewell there is a special place in hell waiting for u

  • ruthann

I dont understand why they dumped his body into the sea,we are not under islamic law, they say that fingerprints and dna and other Id methods were used but we as americans didnt see it,it happened so quickly and its a good thing that finally someone can keep an attack secret but why was the burial done so suddenly too many questions that will go unanswered and “it islamic law”does not fly! If they fianlly got him then good, now prove it.

  • JOHN

Osama Bin Laden got exactly what he deserved-he caused the murder of nearly 3,000 innocent Americans, and now it is payback time.I hope that he is burning deep in the fires of hell forever!

  • Marion Nigro

I am in limbo. I woke up to the news….and then I realized they were talking about Bin Laden in my morning stupor I thought they reporting on Ghadafi.
Since then I have been reading the internet and reading and listening. I think
Obama kept his family out of the white house all weekend – went to florida even though he knew the luanch was postponed – just incase something backfired.
wierd feeling. For my neighbor and friend – who was a First Responder –
    \Hey Vinny RIP.

  • carol

The picure being released looks exactly like a file picture of Bin Laden from 10 years ago only difference is blood and a gunshot to the head. If this truly is Bin Laden, don’t you think in 10 years his hair/bear would have more grey/white in it than this picture shows? It looks like someone who is good with a computer did some creative work and claims this is Bin Laden. He was buried at sea immediately after supposedly a DNA match…I thought it took a while for DNA to be analyzed to begin with. May just be another coverup like who shot JFK.

  • mike

Its about time they caught the c********r

  • Ada Bauer

I’m glad that they finally got the son of a bitch. I hope he enjoy living in the fires of Hell. He and his whole rotten family and follows. I pray that no other nut will pick up where bin laden left off. Now I hope we can get back to normal. And finally try to recover ecomomiclly speaking.

  • Rodin

OMG, this one’s gonna be for the record on comments!

  • khayce

i’ll believe it when i see it they stated they dropped the body in the ocean no more proof.

    • Rodin

A wise move. Guess you would’ve preferred a grave with a marker to satisfy your curiosity and give Al Qaida a place to rally….

      Idiot .

      • Shakra

I’m with you on this one, Rodin. Why give the extremists a place to congregate to mourn the loss of a terrorist? If they want to visit his last resting place in the ocean, I’d be okay with that.

we killed him, he didn’t die from nothing but our elite team that bombed his as!, what a wonderful, wonderful way to go and he took some of his family and still at the very end showed his cowardliness by using a woman as a shield, now we dance in the streets just like his people did in Brooklyn when they brought down our towers,we are now in high risk of retaliation so we must round up all people that are his origin and ship them out mothers, children, men, teenagers, grandmas, grandpas, they must be shipped out, they claimed they are good muslims but yet they were dancing in Brooklyn streets when they bombed the towers , NO MOSQUE IN GROUND ZERO NO WORSHIPING OF THIS EVIL DEVIL.DONNA I guess you didn’t lose anyone on 9/11, so you could care less how we feel, irfan the billion should be wiped out the Germans wiped out 6 plus million Jews and they were good people so your billion could be wiped out. GOD BLESS AMERICA, WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY. HE IS DEAD

  • Stephie

I agree with tjnorton. Gave him an Islamic burial at sea. What about all the Christians, Jews and muslims that didn’t get a burial according to their faith. Now we have more pollution in the ocean. Should have turned him over to the families who loved ones died on 9/11. I want proof. One more thing, the president is taking the credit. What happened to all the liberals who said we should no be in Afghanistan looking for him. Got to go. Going to hand out candy.

  • Justine

He was the embodiment of evil but just one of many – lest we forget. I hope he is reaping his “reward” – ETERNAL MISERY!

  • Azlan

It is closure for the families of those who died on 9/11. May their dead finally rest in peace. Amen.

I’m just worried about retaliations by what’s left of A.Q. Being terrorists, OBL’s proteges and comrades may not necessarily carry them out in the US. More money and resources will have to be spent on beefing up security at US (and its allies’) embassies, hotels, etc. It’s tiring, but what choice do we have, huh?

Also, it gets even tougher for people like me to go to the US to actually visit it as honest, sincere tourists and/or for business. I guess I may not never be able to do so ;(

For those of you who think Obama is wrongly patting himself on the back for this, may be so. But the Bush administration did the same thing when they invaded Iraq and launched their own personal vendetta and ruined two countrys at the same time-Iraq and the United States.
But, then again after reading some of these comments, it looks like the country doesn’t stand a chance with all these new versions of “english” displayed here.

I am amazed that the world is buying this propaganda. As Bhutto stated, OBL died in Dec 2001. Kissinger will confirm that. The Egyptian papers even published his obit. Research the case, people! OBL has been dead for a long time and ask instead what purpose this grand drama serves.

Whats nice about this raid…for the moments these Navy Seal entered, Osama felt fear of death for a moment or two that his life was about to end…the same fear everyone feels each day because of his beliefs and nutcase followers. If they were to just drop bombs instead, it would have been instant death to him, and no real proof we got him. Glad they did the attack this way.
