Officials: Senior Resident Of Newark Boarding Home Assaulted

NEWARK, NJ (WCBS 880) -- The Essex County prosecutor is stepping in to investigate a vicious beating of a senior citizen at a Newark boarding home.

The female victim is a resident of the Hills Boarding Home and was last listed in serious but stable condition at a local hospital.

Acting Essex County prosecutor Carolyn Murray said the woman was attacked Monday night when she stepped outside to smoke a cigarette.

"We are not currently investigating the home itself," Murrayexplained to WCBS 880's Levon Putney. "What we're investigating is what unfortunate and possibly criminal event led to the injury to this woman and led to her current hospitalization."

State senator Richard Codey has called for the boarding home to be shut down. He's already criticized filthy conditions at the Hills, but Murray says Codey has no bearing on her investigation into Monday's attack.

No arrests have been made and so far, there are no suspects. The investigation is still ongoing.
