Death Of Bin Laden

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Oy gevalt!

Something’s a bit different about Brooklyn-based Ultra-orthodox Jewish newspaper Der Tzitung’s coverage of the death of Osama bin Laden.

The paper, whose name means “The Time” in English, ran the iconic image of President Barack Obama and key  members of his administration sitting in the situation room as they monitored the raid on bin Laden’s compound. In the shot, Clinton’s hand is covering her mouth.

In the paper’s version of the shot, though, Clinton is entirely absent, having been edited out. Counter-terrorism analyst Audrey Tomasen was also apparently Photoshopped out.

Click here to see the edited photo.

No word yet from the paper why they edited the women out of the shot.

What do you make of the edit? Sound off in our comments section.

vosiznies: Brooklyn, NY – Hasidic Newspaper “Der Zeitung” Releases Religious Statement On Alterd White House Situation Room Photo. http://bit.ly/kFvOd4

  • news reader

weird thing though is that some ultra otho sat behind a computer screen and did the photoshopping .. had to look at the curves of he women to ensure that he got all of them to remove

    • Rodin

They have some “not so Ortodox” at B & H.

  • Prove It

Prove that they were in the original picuture to begin with. For all we know the entire picture the White House released was photo-shopped and Hillary and Audrey, and perhaps others, weren’t there to begin with and were photo-shopped in later.

    • Rodin

Prove the holocaust to me. I think all those pics were photoshopped too, probably fro puppy mills.

What a jerk! And I’m sure he thought he was being so-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o clever.

      • Rodin

It depends on what you say and whether I agree or not. I’m very “equal opportunity.”

So who reads this paper anyway? I read Der Strudel, it’s a sweeter read.

    Taliban!

        JAKass,

Have you ever heard of “spellcheck”?

  • Rodin

Isn’t this unauthorized altering of a credited White House photograph and publishing it without comment copyright infringement?

Charges should should be brought against the publishers.

  • dph

A newspaper, for whatever reason, does not legally get to change a real-time, news photograph. Doing so changes history for their (protected?) readers. If the vision of a woman in the news is so repulsive, or so prohibited, then that editor should either not run the article, or not run the photo at all. Shame on them.

    • bubba-thump

newspapers ROUTINELY crop and photo shop all of their pictures. sometimes they event print them reversed…on purpose. I also saw copies of the photo by other news outlets, and internet sites that cropped out some of the people on the right side of the picture.

  • Ellen

Well considering it’s from that part of the World it really doesn’t surprise me.

    • Allen

What part of the world do you consider Brooklyn to be in exactly????

      • Rodin

A large chunk of it in Israel. They skirt American criminal and civil law and courts. They disregard every civil right in the books. They do as they wish and justify it with “freedom of religion”. Why not this?

  • Schlomo-the-unorthodox

A couple of weeks ago, The Forward ran an article about orthodox women in Israel who are now veiling themselves in public, in the name of modesty (it also mentioned separate sidewalks for women, in some locales–sheesh). If this movment takes off…

  • Hal Mann

In the wise words of George Carlin: Religion is a form of mental disease.

  • Rodin

So what’s the difference between these guys and the Taliban. They’re both misogynists.

    • mike

Orthodox Jews do not kill like the Taliban, got it ?

      • Rodin

Go tell that to the Palestinians. Get it?

      • Leah

@Rodin – Go tell that to the Palestinians? Could you BE any more misinformed??? Go back to the history books Rodin, and look up 1948 and the UN’s decision to create two States – one for the Jews and one for the people who now falsely call themselves “Palestinians” (though they didn’t start doing that until many years later when they saw it would be politically savvy). THEN look at who attacked who, first. Maybe you should think of looking up the following wars, too. I bet you’ll be surprised that the same people keep attacking…

      • Rodin

Apologist! Who asked the Palestinians? The UN/US final solution to the ‘Jewish Problem’ was to dump the displaced European Jews in PALESTINE by decree because no one else wanted them. In return the Jews fell on the powerless Palestinians who had had no part in the holocaust and have relentlessly persecuted them for Israeli expansionist purposes. Jews, after all, are the ultimate revisionists. Read it as you like.

“Every time anyone says that Israel is our only friend in the Middle East, I can’t help but think that before Israel, we had no enemies in the Middle East.”

  • AllahisaJew

I’m surprised they didn’t photoshop Obama into an Orthordox Jews with Beard and a black hat.

  • Herbie Original Situation Raskin

Although I am not familiar with this paper, I am familiar with the radical ultra orthodox far right community! the reason is simply because they are women! men are not to look at pictures of women and women, in that community are not suppose to rise to that level of leadership – they hold that the only place for a woman is the home, period!!!

  • Richard T.

IF THE PICTURE DID NOT MEET THEIR RELIGIOUS REQUIREMENTS, THEY SHOULD HAVE NOT PRINTED ANYTHING AT ALL. SUCH RIDICULOUS NONSENSE!

  • nyc

All extreme religious individuals are a danger to the world !

  • MrBuddwing

Uncomfortably reminiscent of the good old bad old days of the Cold War, when the official Czech news agency, during the Communist era, deleted Alexander Dubcek from a photograph of an outdoor state ceremony. (The before and after pictures can be seen in the April 24, 1970 issue of LIFE magazine, page 81, readily accessible through Google Books.) And this was way before PhotoShop.

  • JIM

BOY THAT’S A REALLY SMALL ROOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • jagdish

I heard that every other paper photo shopped the women INTO the picture.

  • JIM

I CAN SEE THAT THIS IS A RELIGIOUS PUBLICATION LIKE THE TABLIT AND OTHERS. IF YOU CAN’T SHOW THE WHOLE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH SHOW NOTHING AT ALL

    • bubba-thump

that would leave us with no news media at all. They all lie and slant, and censor, and selectively present what they want to show. If they don’t like a candidate, they most always select a picture that is unfavorable. If they llike the candidate , they select one that makes the candidate look better.

  • VY

The super orthodox of ALL religion oppress and refuse to acknowlegde any woman not engaged in making babies, or in support of those women who are just making babies.
The super orthodox Jews are no different than the super religous Muslims.
Their rules for keeping women down in just baby making rolls are almost exactly the same because they both have the same common origination in the prehistoric life in the middle east.
And yes, they both would like the world to return to the family and religous life people lived in the pre 12th century periods, minus the progumms from the Catholic Church which tried to convert both Muslims and Jews, or kill them.

Just remember, in the modern world, less than 20% of Jewish people are orthodox.
The vast majority of Jewsih people aremembers of the Reformed Jewish movement, the Conservative Jewish movement or the Recontructionists Jewish movement.
So everytime you see a person in a black hat claiming that this or that is based on Jewish Law………NO, it’s based on their ancient view of what they “think” Jewish Law sould be, and the other 80% of NON-orthodox Jewish peolple disagree with them.

    • Leah

@VY – What you say is incorrect. I am not the least bit religious but a lot of my friends are Modern Orthodox and we’ve talked about this issue once or twice. Jewish law is Jewish law. The ultra orthodox may carry some things a bit further, but then the reformed almost don’t carry it at all.

And there is a HUGE difference between orthodox Jews and orthodox Muslims. Just look at Saudi Arabia, home of Islam. The women there are no better than cows—in many cases worse off. And what about women under the Taliban in Afghanistan? Orthodox Jewish women are not treated like possessions, they are not prohibited from driving, learning to read, going out without a male companion. And if a women was to leave the community, she wouldn’t be hunted down and killed or stoned to death.

True, there are some households and even a community or two where you can probably find some oppressed women, but that is the exception, not the rule.

  • Trish

I just want to know why women are subjected to cover themselves?? Mrs Clinton and Ms Tomassen should not have been edited, they are not ultra orthodox anything.

    • Women and Girls Rule my World

      @Trish,

Nor are those two likely to ‘turn-on’ any males. I’m surprised the ultra-orthodox males aren’t told to blind themselves, lest they see the horror of an attractive female.
Yikes! A…a g-g-g-girl! Get it away from me! Icky!

    • bubba-thump

I have seen pictures of Hillary Clinton, when in ISLAMIC countries, she always wears a head covering. Same for Christian Amanpour, the media person. Hillary,, as secretary of state, has been in Islamic countries where officials won’t even shake her hand.

    • bubba-thump

I have seen pictures of Hillary Clinton, when in ISLAMIC countries, she always wears a head covering. Same for Christian Amanpour, the media person.

  • Leah

@Anon: Modifying the truth is the same as lying. By editing the photo, Der Tzitung has misrepresented, altered, LIED about who was involved in the incident portrayed therein. They have changed history to match THEIR version. Isn’t that what Moslem terrorists do every day?

If ultra orthodox newspapers have a problem with reporting the facts as they TRULY happen, women and all, then they have no business being in business. And they are no better Al Jazeera, or any rag in Syria, Iran, Egypt, Lebanon, Afghanistan, or Saudi Arabia. They are no better than AP, Reuters, or any leftist publication.

And no, orthodox women don’t wear burkas, and yes, they do go out and work, but if you think that means they aren’t without pressure to conform to certain standards and stay away from certain professions, then you are either completely naive, or in agreement with those practices.

Newspapers – and I use the term so lightly it’s almost floating away – like Der Tzitung, that behave like our enemies, don’t do us any favors. They contribute to the detriment of us all. And if any of the “righteous men” on the staff (oh oh, that term’s going up like a helium balloon) want to know why Mashiach hasn’t come, they can look in the mirror. I’m pretty sure Hashem doesn’t like liars.

  • Jack Mayhoff

So, I guess the hotly anticipated ‘Girls of Der Tzitung’ issue will be a bust.

    • nathan

Your snarky attempt at humor and screen name are lost on 99% of the readership “Jack”. Is this really what you’re doing with that college degree your parents paid for?

      • Leah

Jack, I thought it was funny!

      • Jack Mayhoff

        Nate,

My snarks are meant for those with a healthy sense of humor about the world around us; like our pal Leah!

    • Ant928

      I thought it was funny a H*LL!

  • RG

The reason why she is cut out is because Orthodox papers do not print pictures of women. Duh!

    • anon

sorry you are wrong muslims do it to subjugate ultra orthodox do it so as not to stare at women. I admit it is extreme, but there are plenty of ulta ortho women working and of course none of them wear burkas or cover their face

      • Shecky Green

        @Nick,

Are you referring to the fact that they mostly resemble Joey Ramone?

    • NYer

Wrong! Women cover their hair and wear long skirts and long sleeves to be modest. The idea is to not turn on men as they walk around. Plenty of Ultra-Orthodox women work and they hold almost every position in business you can imagine, many having their own businesses.
The reason the women were photoshopped out of the picture, is that this particular publication does not print pictures of women. Period. If Hilary were president, this paper would not carry a picture of the president for four years!
It’s about giving the men who read this a paper without ‘distractions’.
What I want to know is whether they acknowledged her presence in the article that went with the picture.

      • Vern

There was absolutrly nothing imodest about the 2 women in the photograph.
Perhaps orthodox women of all stripes will finally quit giving credence to the thoroughly discredited idea that women are responsible for men’s bad behavior and inability to control themselves.
By going along they are enabling their own subjugation. We can only hope that this most laughable and ridiculous example will jar some women out of their sad compliance.

  • Dr. Debbie Weissman, Jerusalem

Der Tzitung does not mean “the time;” it means “the newspaper.” “The time” would simply be “Der Tzeit.”
Ultra-Orthodox newspapers generally don’t carry pictures of women.

    • Don Juan

Well then they should choose a different photo — not try to falsify history.

    • Vern

Apparently they would prefer that women did not exist–if you can’t see them they are not there.
