Police: Woman Dumped Newborn Baby Inside Trash Can At Queens Hospital

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A newborn baby was fighting for her life Tuesday night after being dumped in a trash can inside a Queens emergency room bathroom earlier in the day.

Authorities said a woman -- believed to be in her 20s -- gave birth inside Elmhurst Hospital, put the baby in the trash can and then walked out around 2:30 p.m.

The woman believed to be responsible was taken into police custody Tuesday night. No charges have been filed yet.

Cathy Valasco, who is expecting a child herself, said she can't even imagine such an act.

"Definitely something wrong with that woman," she told 1010 WINS' Al Jones.

A hospital employee found the baby clinging to life inside the trash cash. Officials said they are not sure if the woman was a patient. The baby was in critical condition.

Valasco said the woman's behavior goes against everything that mothers should feel.

"Because you know like a mother that is expecting a baby, [they] would never do that," she said. "She has to have psychological problems."
