Chihuahua Lifts Leg, Gets Blame For LI Bomb Scare

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — A dog that wasn’t quite housebroken may have indirectly been responsible for a bomb scare at a Long Island courthouse.

The trouble began Friday when 19-year-old Melvin Ruffin arrived at a court complex in Central Islip following a long bus ride from his home in Bellport.

During the trip, another passenger’s Chihuahua urinated on his backpack.

So, he stashed the wet bag in some bushes while he went inside to answer a disorderly conduct citation.

But then a retired police officer saw the bag and alerted security.

The bomb squad was ultimately called in. Officers used a robot to determine that the bag didn’t contain anything harmful.

Ruffin tells Newsday that authorities let him off with a warning to be more careful next time about where he left his stuff.

You never know. Better safe than sorry. Wait. I’m looking into my book of cliches. You can’t be too careful. You never know where that Al Cater guy is going to strike next.

Paranoia gone Wild, yep the sequel to government gone wild. think the biggest threat to America is its own security forces. I do think they where right to take caution over the napsac issue and persue it but to warn a kid over it , like he did something wrong, thats paranoia and that over reaction shows the world that terrorism works.

  7. Chase says:

I’d rather see this story then, “Bomb kills 156 at Long Islands courthouse”

  8. Sydelle Houston says:

I’m wondering what is a chihuahua doing loose on a public bus?

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING, that retired police officer was only doing what any of us would have done. After what happened in Pakistan this week we can’t let our guard down. It was, however, too much to give the kid a warning. He needs an explanation.

    1. carlrosen says:

I seriously doubt that anyone would want to bomb a courthouse in Central Islip , LI-NY.

    2. carlrosen says:

In case you haven’t noticed, this is NOT PAKISTAN despite the number of cab driver’s from there. Bombs go off all the time ANYWHERE in that h e l l hole. Central Islip in Central Islip. Not Pakistan.

Authorities let Ruffin off with a warning? What did he do wrong? He left a smelly urine covered knapsack outside. Big deal. This society has gone bonkers.

    1. Nick DiPalo says:

I must have missed something. Where in the story did it say the retired officer was out on 3/4’s?

  13. Urinetown says:

    This story sure stinks.

But then a retired police officer saw the bag and alerted security.

Bet the moron was retired NYPD out on 3/4

    1. ham07 says:

He wouldn’t have been a retired moron if it really was a bomb,
