Baby Girl Dumped In Elmhurst Hospital Trash Can Dies

NEW YORK (AP) -- A newborn dumped in a Queens hospital trash can last week has died.

Prosecutors say the baby girl was declared dead Wednesday and a grand jury will now consider upgrading charges against the child's 23-year-old mother.

Police say Dawa Lama, of Queens, was arrested on charges of assault and reckless endangerment last Wednesday after her daughter was discovered in critical condition in the trash can of a bathroom at Elmhurst Hospital Center.
