Mayor Michael Bloomberg Defends Plan To Shutter 20 Firehouses

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended his proposal to close 20 city fire companies as a budget-cutting measure.

On his weekly WOR Radio show on Friday, the mayor said firefighting has changed over the last century. He says most houses today are not made of wood, have sprinklers and “hopefully” smoke detectors.

Bloomberg says that since the 1940s, 20 firehouses have closed in Lower Manhattan. And despite concerns, he says, response times and fire deaths are at a new low.

On Thursday, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was among those criticizing the planned closings.

Bloomberg says sacrifices have to be made somewhere.

The city has six weeks to finalize its budget.

I agree with Mayor Bloomberg. We have to cut the fat. This is about protecting jobs and nothing else. The Fire Dept does not care about whether or not the dept is run efficiently and what it ultimately costs. They just want to protect jobs as if it is some God given right to be a lifelong city employee. Things change…deal with it people and move on!

    First things first…

We need a new law allowing the police and fire departments to hire CITY RESIDENTS instead of giving absolute priority to suburbanites. How can they effectively “serve and protect” us if they’re not even willing to live among us?

Sacrifices have to be made somewhere? Our military killed bin laden 3 weeks ago. You dont think they are plotting against us now more than ever? You don’t cut your emergency services. Start by administering drug tests to welfare recipients. Start accounting for all the immigrants in this country that reap the benefits of this country but don’t pay taxes. Buildings are sprinklered? I’m not sure what that has to do with anything. Most people are not burned alive, they die of smoke inhalation. Closed firehouses= dead civilians and fireman. Their blood will be on king bloomturds hands!!!!!
