NYC No Smoking Ban At Parks, Other Public Places, To Start Monday

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — New smoking laws will take effect in New York City Monday, prohibiting smokers from lighting up in certain public places.

No smoking sings are already up in Central Park. Come Monday the city’s sweeping ban kicks in at parks, beaches and pedestrian plazas, like in Times Square.

WCBS 880’s Sean Adams reports: Tourists Sound Off On New NYC Smoking Ban

“I can’t smoke in front of my wife, for example. I would feel it would help me quit. If I was restricted from smoking in public areas, I won’t do it and therefore I’ll obviously smoke less,” said Bill Renny.

The question now is, will anyone obey the law? Mayor Michael Bloomberg has indicated the police are busy with criminals and terrorists and expects the public to give smokers a kindly reminder.

The law was passed as a way to help prevent second-hand smoke.

What do you think about this new law? Let us know in our comments section.

The government should stop subsidizing the tobacco industry. And just outlaw smoking.

  2. mike steede says:

How about he pass a law that you have to speak english in Washington Heights any where you handle American money?

    Why don’t you STFU?

Not if you roll your own.

  5. Midwesterner says:

I love New York and try to get there every few years. But today I’m glad to sit in the park over lunch and smoke a cig from my carton I paid $53.00 for. Maybe landing a job in Des Moines isn’t all bad. And like so many people have already stated, if someone had been there and asked me to move, I would have happily done so.

  6. edward says:

This goes beyond the bounds of supression.Indoor smoking bans are one thing but outdoors is highly questionable. One can’t imagine that smkoking could be any worse than the exhaust fumes that surround the new pedestrian plazas in the middle of Times Square and Broadway.Certainly the parks and beaches are large enough that they could have had smoking permitted/prohibited designated areas.
What’s truly absurd is thecity’s admitting that these new restrictions are as likely to be enforced as jay walking; so why even bothe

  7. re:TomNJ and everybody else says:

re:TomNJ – every foreigner coming off the plane at JFK or elsewhere should be given a bottle or can of Ban Roll-on and instructed on how to use it, in 16 languages just like when they apply for a driver’s license! The foreigners’ body odor is offensive, but is it as bad as the cigarrettes? While we are at it, what about banning f**ts and belching, and mandatory to learn how to bathe every day, wipe your a** and change and wash your underwear?

  8. PAYBACKSABICH says:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA now you filthy pigs can finally answer for forcing me to breathe your smoke………they should make it an indictable offense! : ) : ) : )

payback for all those mornings i had to walk behind some loser on the sidewalk that has taken my breath away with their smoke!!!

    1. BF says:

Your the loser, what a baby… and I dont smoke but i am not a whimp

  9. Dee Tay says:

These people who don’t smoke are something else. I say if you don’t want to smoke thats fine. i’m trying to stop myself, but when i do, that doesn’t mean that everybody has to stop smoking. My biggest problem is DID SOMEONE TELL THE NO-SMOKERS THAT THE GOV. PAID FOR THE FREE AIR THAT GOD HAS PROVIDED FOR ALL THE POPLE? IF SO, PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHO PAID FOR THE AIR. Another thing is the NON SMOKERS ARE SO WORRIED ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN INHAILING SMOKE, what do you do when there is WEED SMOKE around your CHILDREN? AND PLEASE DON’T SAY ITS NOT AROUND. what do you do? There’s also , CRACK SMELLS, NON SMOKERS, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR CHILDREN THEN? OH, I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT CIGARS WHAT ABOUT THAT SMELL? What do you do with your CHILDREN THEN? ALSO, THE cigarette company now wants to supply the smokers with CHEWING TABACCO, now whats going to happen when the people SPIT THAT STUFF OUT ON THE SIDE WALKS OR IN THE SAND and YOUR CHILDREN FALL DOWN IN THAT STUFF OR YOU STEP IN IT. what will you do then? But, yet and still YOU are worried about OUR PLAIN LITTLE CIGARETTE SMOKING. NOW THINK ABOUT THIS. Have a great day.

  10. iggy says:

i don’t smoke anymore. but if my tax money subsidizes the tobacco industry, why wouldn’t i be allowed to use a product i financially support? because of a little tyrant mayor? or an alternate life-style council member? sig heil

  11. TomNJ says:

What about all you people who have an offensive odor and/or fumes coming off of you? Sometimes perfume and such makes me sick and I have no idea of the health hazards associated with it. Also, while we are at it, I am mentally and emotionally harmed by the sheer ugliness of so many people i see walking around. Certainly, if non smoking is how some people want the world and they get to have it that way by screaming and stomping their feet, I can have the world my way where everyone is the way I like it.

  12. steven H says:

I am a smoker, i ddo not want to quit yet and i won’t. I am curious to see how this is actually going to be enforced considering the amount of smokers in NYC and the amount of people that A) ignore the law or B) Don’t care enough to look at the news and figure it out. Personally i will ignore it. I understand 2nd hand smoke is potentially bad for people around me but theres plenty of smoke free area. Beside technically this is unconstitutional, this is stripping people of their rights to do something that is completely legal in a public area. It’s like telling someone you can no longer speak your mind. If it’s legal and does not impair judgement it should be allowed in public areas. People talk about americans being sheep in such a casual way on this thread im assuming to spark a political disscusion about that particular topic. People sit around on there ass and take whatever the government throws at them. When the government contradicts itself in so many ways. This is one of them. We are not free as long as we are as americans are regulated to certain areas of the PUBLIC parks and plazas, and are looked down upon by non smokers who come at us with a attitude. obviously dont smoke on a playground around kids and etc. Use your head as a smoker. I wouldnt even mind the people asking me not to smoke but you people come at us with such a holier than thou attitude that borders on the condescending. Which is exactly what causes the arguments. Most smokers you ask politely they will move or ask you to move, either way it avoids confrontation. SO just because this law is passed doesnt give you a right to come at me with a attitude. Keep in mind were people when you talk to us, and talk down to us or try to degrade us and maybe. Just maybe we will be less likely to smoke right in front of you

    1. Steven H says:

and don’t Try to talk to down to us… (this thread lacks a edit button)

    2. JOE says:

Steve H very good, also what about the soldiers.they fight for our freedom and they can not smoke in a nice quit park of beach what the hell.

  13. richiano says:

MR Blumberg is a sick person and any legislatior like him ought to remember
what that what our brave military fought for was our freedom. Now he and other politicians (freeks take our freedoms away) with the stroke of a pen.

  14. marx engels says:

I don’t particularly like the mayor but this is the first time that I agree with him and the City Council. Good move, now let’s totally ban cellphones and texting behind the wheel. You imbeciles are driving an average two-ton machine that can kill someone. You’re supposed to be paying attention to the road; this is tantamount to attempted murder, and the same as drunk driving. Anybody caught driving and talking on the f***ing phone or texting should lose their license for good! Stop smoking, get off your fat behinds and walk, ride a bicycle, etc.

  15. CRACKHEAD says:

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ITS OKAY TO SMOKE MY PIPE

    1. Elephant in the Subway says:

People are deliberately smoking weed so they can stuff their faces after they get tjhe
“Munchies”, then they fall asleep and do nothing. Ban weed.

  16. DENNIS HARRISON says:

WHO OR WHAT WILL BE NEXT TO GO BY THE WAYSIDE UNDER GUISE OF PUBLIC SAFETY OR CONCERN. AGAIN WHO OR WHAT IS NEXT

    1. Pete Doyle says:

Laws like this make me shake my head. Pass an unenforceable law?? That does not make a whole lot of sense.
And…irony here…..no smoking in the Times Square plaza….a plaza area surrounded by some of the busiest streets in the world with cars and trucks pumping out noxious emissions pretty much 24/7….but no smoking.
The Brooklyn Heights Promenade…….sitting atop six lanes of constant heavy traffic and exhaust. No smoking.
      Who are the lawmakers kidding?
      Pete
PS – I do not smoke.

      1. oliveoyl says:

Thanks for your comments. I have been waiting to see if anyone will realize the irony of banning smoking in a city where the exhaust fumes surely exceed in all ways any damages that could be caused by “second-hand smoke” – especially outside of any enclosed area.

  17. MCK says:

Just wait until someone reminds a smoker about the new law and that smoker takes it the wrong way…..will it be worth it then? When the “good guy” gets pummeled by the “bad guy” because he didn’t like the attitude!!!

    1. MileHigher84 says:

I think you are being a little over dramatic. Smokers may get offended when someone wants to be a jerk reminding them, but I dont see physical violence peaking. Be respectful, and you won’t have an issue.

  18. Paul G. says:

Fix the f***ing potholes in the city then deal with the smokers later

    1. Sarah Ruiz says:

      paul g. i love that…

  19. Logan Byrne says:

THIS IS THE DUMBEST LAW PASSED. You suck up for fatal fumes from cars that second hand smoke.

  20. Jeffrey says:

Good luck trying to collect money on those fines Bloomy! It’s amazing how this Mayor was smart enought to earn billions of dollars, but has no common sense in matters that should be obvious.

  21. Audrey Silk says:

All you anti-smokers (different from non-smokers) who are writing that you’ll be so glad tomorrow when you don’t have to pass a smoker are delusional. You’re cheering and expecting something that just will not happen. This law will be paid the respect it deserves. For good measure, we’ll be holding a “Smoke-In The Park” next Saturday. Visit NYC C.L.A.S.H. for more details.

    1. The Dawn is Coming says:

No, you freaking morons. Smoking exacerbates tornadoes and flooding in the Midwest because water vapor and CO2 are the 2 primary byproducts of COMBUSTION. Get that through your thick skulls.

  22. Jeffrey says:

The new law will be like jaywalking. No one will take it seriously. If I had Bloomy’s billions I wouldn’t waste my time or effort forcing people not to smoke. It’s like trying to stop someone from peeing in the forest. GOOD LUCK!

The Libertarian Party is holding a beach smoking party. Come support our right to smoke as free human beings: http://www.meetup.com/NY-Libertarians/events/18434411

  23. jessy b. says:

I am sooo happy about this. I take my kids to the park and there is always some idiot parent with a cigarette and smoking… Thanks Bloomberg! I don’t like you much but I like this new law!

  24. Jeffrey says:

Audrey Silk for NYC Mayor! Vote Libertarian Party to restore our rights! Audrey Silk believes in smoker’s rights! I do not smoke myself but I think it’s everyone’s right to do in public. If you don’t like being in the company of a smoker, then just walk somewhere else. There is lots of open public space outside so that smoke doesn’t get trapped. We should be allowed to smoke wherever we want in public including smoking sections of restaurants that do not connect to non-smoking areas. Mayor Bloomberg: we’re sick of your socialism. Do us a favor and move back to Khazaria where you belong with your Commie red friends!

  25. Andrew Jackson says:

You figure our public officials would be doing more to rid our public services of illegals. Not making it tougher on doing something legal as smoking. Car emitting gases are by far much worst than a smokers smoke. How about making idle trucks and buses turn there engines off, when making deliveries. Simply because you don’t see the smoke don’t mean the gases aren’t there.

    1. Andrew W. says:

Well, since in some cases leaving a bus idle for 2 hours will use less gas; produce less carbon emissions, than turning it on… your hope to get them to turn them off will only worsen the problem you see to fix.

  26. androshi says:

this is so stupid -the mayor is doing this so he could flaunt his weight around and stick it too the cigarette company ,because he himself smoked for many years . what he’s doing isnt legal! he himself has raised the taxes 4 times in new york .

he also raised the cost of living in new york !

he closed down so many things in new york for senior citizens -i really hate this man.

he cut so many programs and shut down fire houses -its like he is some sought of demon -looking to ruin new york and the middle class. he killed the poor people. he almost made them all to move out. go figure.

    1. KOULA K. says:

I SOOOO AGREE WITH YOU. HE SUCKS!! GET A LIFE BLOOMBERG AND LEAVE US BE ALREADY!!

    2. hf says:

He also destroyed Coney Island. Forget the beach without smokes… You will be paying$4 for a hot dog, a new bloomberg tax on the poor so the rich will be able to take over Coney Island. Boycott Luna Park and don’t buy their food.

  27. pughpah says:

Hoooray! There’s nothing worse than to be jogging or running, and to run right into
a wall of tobacco smoke…damn, it feels like your freaking lungs are going to blow right up. smokersodysseycom

THE LAST TIME I LOOK UP DICTATOR .IT MEANTED A RULER WITH TOTAL POWER OVER A COUNTRY,TYPICALLY ONE WHO HAS OBTAINED POWER BY FORCE..AND THAT’S BOOMBERG…IT’S FUNNY HOW THIS COUNTRY FALT MANY COUNTRY’S FOR HAVING DICTATOR’S..BUNCH OF HIPPOCRIB’S…HERE YOU ARE DICTATING US…OPEN YOUR EYE’S AMERICAN…HE IS A CONTROL FREAK..

    1. MR KNOW IT ALL says:

SARAH RUIZ YOU MAKE SOME GOOD POINTS,BUT COULD YOU PLEASE GO TO NIGHT SCHOOL AND LEARN TO SPELL

  29. Bubba says:

I’m glad. I’m tired of having to move from a park bench because someone’s smoke gets in my face.

  30. 0 to be tall says:

smoking stunts your growth Just ask Mayor Bloomberg

  31. Barre Flynn says:

We are weak people who cannot regulate by self moderation. Bloomberg has completely lost it and the world laughs at our profound ignorance.

  32. The Facts says:

Welcome to the People,s Republic of New York City. All together: kow tow to the Great Leader. This is the result of the people electing liberals as opposed to libertarians on election day.

    1. Jeffrey says:

I vote Libertarian too because I like to be left alone and not told what to do or how I must live according to someone else’s standards. Ron Paul for U.S. President in 2012! Time to take the country back! Time to reclaim the Declaration of Independence from the new British who rule our once free lands.

  33. Soap says:

So glad I moved out of the dump.

  34. desi_babo says:

Bottom line is City needs money…..they will find every stupid way to write tickets and collect fines……thats how Cops justify their jobs…..becaise they are affraid of fighting with real criminals…..it will one professional against the other….so they look for easy target…..and what could be more easier than writing tickets all day.

    1. M Fine says:

The real hero cops are staking out for their fellow hero cops during rapes and other professional activities. They do have time to fight other badge-less professional criminals or to write tickets on people who do not care about their health. Smoking in NYC is such a crime. And raping and assaulting innocents are not.

  35. Tony says:

Wheter anybody realizes or not NYC is becoming the city of no pedestrian malls bike lanes no parking where food restaurants have to have calories chart no f d no cops anybody that wants to live or visit NYC better go have their head examine no smoke in parks or beaches o m g

  36. E Bruneau says:

this is so stupid I dont smoke but it doesnt bother me when other people does that is their right and I am tried of the goverment telling us what we can can not do this is not a free country anymore I this the goverment needs to keep their nose out of our business we are adults

    1. Jeffrey says:

So true! I’m sick of the nanny and police state.

  37. George says:

The city and/or the state has no constitutional legal authority to ban or not to ban smoking or regulate our lives in any way. I am not a smoker and I don’t like second hand smoke either, but it shouldn’t be on mayor Bloomberg to impose that, because he has no authority doing it

    1. Bubba says:

Hey, George – the legal authority is from the City Council that duly passed the law by a majority vote and then signed by the Mayor. It’s All Constitutional

  38. Cigar Aficionado says:

Another continuation in Kaiser Adolf Bloomberg’s strive to dictate and control the most minute details of people’s lives. Enforcement chances are zero to nill.

  39. A.Marsh says:

People, people…wake up ….has anyone noticed that this country is NOT the land of the free anymore??? All of our rights as Americans are slowly being taken from us. Look around…if you don’t like the music, turn the station. If you don’t like what i am wearing- don’t look. If you don’t like what i said…oh well- that is your right. However, if we Americans continue to follow like SHEEP and do as the task master says and NOT fight back and voice up (or man up) and start making a stand we as Americans’ will have no right at all. Give me liberty or give me death! Does that phrase have any meaning to any of you??? Really??? Our founders of this country are rolling in their graves. If I choose to light up in a park- I will- Fine me… arrest me… Cause when I get out I will do it again! Defiance to the King! Wake up people! wake up!

    1. Jeffrey says:

That’s what I intend to do. No matter what the law is, I will live as I wish. Live free or die! Phuck you Bloomberg!

      1. Sarah Ruiz says:

you are so rigth..i said let’s go back to the 60..went we …fiigth for our rigth’s..enough is enough..

  40. Angel says:

Next, make cigarettes illegal.Think about how much money we’ll save on medical costs. The smoke from cigarettes rival the pollution from cars and trucks. One major difference between the two,we don’t need to smoke,we need the trucks and cars for our way of life to continue.Cigarettes kill, they should be outlawed. And to those who criticize,I used to be a smoker, life is better without them.

    1. Steve says:

Then people have something else to make money off of illeagally, which in tirn leads to people killing people because they are cutting in on their turf. So lets start another drug war, shall we.

      1. Jeffrey says:

Steve is right! Prohibition always leads to more organized crime, violence and more dangerous streets. This is why prohibition didn’t work and never will! Even youth find their ways to get booze and smokes.

    2. Malber says:

Yes, and let’s make all processed foods illegal, all of ’em. Think about how much money we’ll save on medical costs. Oh, yes, and let’s make working too much illegal, and the high cost of living — all that stress is killing us. Oh, and let’s make the plastics industry illegal. The plastic water bottles are leeching poison into the water we drink. Think about how much money we’ll save on medical costs.

By the way, we don’t need all the trucks and cars. Our way of life has escalated exponentially since the 1980s; maybe our way of life should be made illegal.

    3. Reuben says:

You sound like an ex smoker. Calm down.

  41. Barbara says:

There is no sientific proof that second hand smoke is dangerous or causes any health issue to the non-smoker. Question, what taxes are they going to increase or invent to make up for the loss of cigarette taxes?. Now you all can pat instead of just the smokers.

    1. Ali says:

there is unquestionable scientific proof that second-hand smoke is dangerous, and more recently that third-hand smoke is also dangerous. idiot!

      1. actuallyReads says:

There is not unquestionable scientific proof. The WHO study they site actually says second hand smoke has a positive effect for certain age groups. The “negative” effect has a relative risk lower than 2.0 which is defined as statistically insignificant. Look up what that means and get back to me.. Oh an 3rd hand smoke? Now you just sound dumb

  42. patrick faup says:

why dont you look outside your window.. the boilers from surrounding building are doing more harm than us smoking.
ps: you should move to the country.. next to the nuclear plan. it is safer.

    1. Angel says:

if people want to smoke and ruin their lives, they should do so in their own homes.I’m tired of walking behind someone and breathing in their second hand smoke.Horray for Mayor Boomberg for haviong the B****s to do something about it.Kepp your filthy, disgusting habit to yourselves.

      1. KOULA K. says:

IF WE LEAVE IT UP TO BLOOMBERG, WE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SMOKE IN OUR HOMES SOON EITHER. NOT FAIR. WE ALL HAVE OUR RIGHTS AND THOSE ARE BEING STRIPPED SLOWLY BY A MESSED UP MAYOR. HE SHOULD GO LIVE IN THE BAHAMAS OR WHEREVER THE HELL HE GOES AND WENT WHEN WE WERE BACKED UP WITH ALL THE SNOW THIS PAST WINTER AND HE WAS NOT AROUND TO DO HIS JOB CORRECTLY. HE IS AN ASS AND NEEDS TO GET THE HELL OUT OF OFFICE ALREADY.

  43. TSTER says:

Nowadays you walk down the sidewalk and all you breath is second hand smoke from the employees who sneak out of their jobs to smoke!
NYC needs to ban smoking on all sidewalks as well.

    1. Ellen says:

They should have banned smoking in public whether at the parks, beach or sidewalks decades age. God, I if they did that I wouldn’t have taken up that dame filthy habit in the first place.

      1. JOE says:

TSTER , ELLEN, I Bet you weigh 250 lbs right.

  44. englewood jack says:

YES! it’s about time. i’m tired of breathing other people’s carbon monoxide that i choose not to produced. nasty stuff, nasty. i’ve avoided some of nyc parks due to the smoke that just lingers there (tompkins sq, to be precise). now let’s modify ALL vehicles in manhattan to solar/electric. that would be another great step to air purification.

    1. patrick faup says:

hey rnglewood jack. i hope you have a SOLAR heating and ac in your house too…. may be you are still waiting for the apocapypse too.

    2. littlestar says:

How about someones’ methane ? That’s naturaly produced. This law is absured..

  45. Bernie Sanders says:

I think hes an idiot as usual …This is another annoying law to stop people from smoking ..we have the rights to smoke .. tax the drinkers and go after the people who drink and drive .. and KILL people on the road . As A new yorker today is the day I will not visit a park or a beach or public affair .. We have to pay for everything but don’t have the right to smoke .. cant wait til the housing market is better I am so out of this disgusting city that I hate so much . I HATE NY SHOULD BE THE SONG !

    1. Angel says:

Hey Bernie, simple solution,if you hate NY,move out.We need clean air more than we need you.

      1. Jeffrey says:

I’m with Bernie Sanders! I HATE NY! It is the land of the unfree!

  46. mike steede says:

Some of what this mayor has done is really cool with me, closed down some of the avenues on weekends let tourists walk and see the city, vendors can sell some of the best foods of the trucks, I like that..but the law kind of caters to new yorkers and non new yorkers that have jumped on the band wagon of ” ohhhh I cant breath” discusting habit, we pay taxes too, etc.. cigarettes are $12.00 a pack in my neighborhood and like cheap perfume, if it aint illegal you can use it over the age limit..

  47. Good law says:

Thank you for this law. I am going to stop smoking after 25 years. Why? becuase if I light up and one person makes any kind of remark to me whatsoever, I’ll be in prison for murder. So thanks again. Less revenue for the state and I’ll see my daughter married after all.
