NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – New smoking laws will take effect in New York City Monday, prohibiting smokers from lighting up in certain public places.

No smoking sings are already up in Central Park. Come Monday the city’s sweeping ban kicks in at parks, beaches and pedestrian plazas, like in Times Square.

WCBS 880′s Sean Adams reports: Tourists Sound Off On New NYC Smoking Ban

“I can’t smoke in front of my wife, for example. I would feel it would help me quit. If I was restricted from smoking in public areas, I won’t do it and therefore I’ll obviously smoke less,” said Bill Renny.

The question now is, will anyone obey the law? Mayor Michael Bloomberg has indicated the police are busy with criminals and terrorists and expects the public to give smokers a kindly reminder.

The law was passed as a way to help prevent second-hand smoke.

What do you think about this new law? Let us know in our comments section.

I am sooo happy about this. I take my kids to the park and there is always some idiot parent with a cigarette and smoking… Thanks Bloomberg! I don’t like you much but I like this new law!

  • Jeffrey

Audrey Silk for NYC Mayor! Vote Libertarian Party to restore our rights! Audrey Silk believes in smoker’s rights! I do not smoke myself but I think it’s everyone’s right to do in public. If you don’t like being in the company of a smoker, then just walk somewhere else. There is lots of open public space outside so that smoke doesn’t get trapped. We should be allowed to smoke wherever we want in public including smoking sections of restaurants that do not connect to non-smoking areas. Mayor Bloomberg: we’re sick of your socialism. Do us a favor and move back to Khazaria where you belong with your Commie red friends!

  • Andrew Jackson

You figure our public officials would be doing more to rid our public services of illegals. Not making it tougher on doing something legal as smoking. Car emitting gases are by far much worst than a smokers smoke. How about making idle trucks and buses turn there engines off, when making deliveries. Simply because you don’t see the smoke don’t mean the gases aren’t there.

    • Andrew W.

Well, since in some cases leaving a bus idle for 2 hours will use less gas; produce less carbon emissions, than turning it on… your hope to get them to turn them off will only worsen the problem you see to fix.

  • androshi

this is so stupid -the mayor is doing this so he could flaunt his weight around and stick it too the cigarette company ,because he himself smoked for many years . what he’s doing isnt legal! he himself has raised the taxes 4 times in new york .

he also raised the cost of living in new york !

he closed down so many things in new york for senior citizens -i really hate this man.

he cut so many programs and shut down fire houses -its like he is some sought of demon -looking to ruin new york and the middle class. he killed the poor people. he almost made them all to move out. go figure.

    • KOULA K.

I SOOOO AGREE WITH YOU. HE SUCKS!! GET A LIFE BLOOMBERG AND LEAVE US BE ALREADY!!

    • hf

He also destroyed Coney Island. Forget the beach without smokes… You will be paying$4 for a hot dog, a new bloomberg tax on the poor so the rich will be able to take over Coney Island. Boycott Luna Park and don’t buy their food.

  • pughpah

Hoooray! There’s nothing worse than to be jogging or running, and to run right into
a wall of tobacco smoke…damn, it feels like your freaking lungs are going to blow right up. smokersodysseycom

THE LAST TIME I LOOK UP DICTATOR .IT MEANTED A RULER WITH TOTAL POWER OVER A COUNTRY,TYPICALLY ONE WHO HAS OBTAINED POWER BY FORCE..AND THAT’S BOOMBERG…IT’S FUNNY HOW THIS COUNTRY FALT MANY COUNTRY’S FOR HAVING DICTATOR’S..BUNCH OF HIPPOCRIB’S…HERE YOU ARE DICTATING US…OPEN YOUR EYE’S AMERICAN…HE IS A CONTROL FREAK..

    • MR KNOW IT ALL

SARAH RUIZ YOU MAKE SOME GOOD POINTS,BUT COULD YOU PLEASE GO TO NIGHT SCHOOL AND LEARN TO SPELL

  • Bubba

I’m glad. I’m tired of having to move from a park bench because someone’s smoke gets in my face.

  • 0 to be tall

smoking stunts your growth Just ask Mayor Bloomberg

  • Barre Flynn

We are weak people who cannot regulate by self moderation. Bloomberg has completely lost it and the world laughs at our profound ignorance.

  • The Facts

Welcome to the People,s Republic of New York City. All together: kow tow to the Great Leader. This is the result of the people electing liberals as opposed to libertarians on election day.

    • Jeffrey

I vote Libertarian too because I like to be left alone and not told what to do or how I must live according to someone else’s standards. Ron Paul for U.S. President in 2012! Time to take the country back! Time to reclaim the Declaration of Independence from the new British who rule our once free lands.

  • Soap

So glad I moved out of the dump.

  • desi_babo

Bottom line is City needs money…..they will find every stupid way to write tickets and collect fines……thats how Cops justify their jobs…..becaise they are affraid of fighting with real criminals…..it will one professional against the other….so they look for easy target…..and what could be more easier than writing tickets all day.

    • M Fine

The real hero cops are staking out for their fellow hero cops during rapes and other professional activities. They do have time to fight other badge-less professional criminals or to write tickets on people who do not care about their health. Smoking in NYC is such a crime. And raping and assaulting innocents are not.

  • http://Aol Tony

Wheter anybody realizes or not NYC is becoming the city of no pedestrian malls bike lanes no parking where food restaurants have to have calories chart no f d no cops anybody that wants to live or visit NYC better go have their head examine no smoke in parks or beaches o m g

  • E Bruneau

this is so stupid I dont smoke but it doesnt bother me when other people does that is their right and I am tried of the goverment telling us what we can can not do this is not a free country anymore I this the goverment needs to keep their nose out of our business we are adults

    • Jeffrey

So true! I’m sick of the nanny and police state.

  • George

The city and/or the state has no constitutional legal authority to ban or not to ban smoking or regulate our lives in any way. I am not a smoker and I don’t like second hand smoke either, but it shouldn’t be on mayor Bloomberg to impose that, because he has no authority doing it

    • Bubba

Hey, George – the legal authority is from the City Council that duly passed the law by a majority vote and then signed by the Mayor. It’s All Constitutional

  • Cigar Aficionado

Another continuation in Kaiser Adolf Bloomberg’s strive to dictate and control the most minute details of people’s lives. Enforcement chances are zero to nill.

  • A.Marsh

People, people…wake up ….has anyone noticed that this country is NOT the land of the free anymore??? All of our rights as Americans are slowly being taken from us. Look around…if you don’t like the music, turn the station. If you don’t like what i am wearing- don’t look. If you don’t like what i said…oh well- that is your right. However, if we Americans continue to follow like SHEEP and do as the task master says and NOT fight back and voice up (or man up) and start making a stand we as Americans’ will have no right at all. Give me liberty or give me death! Does that phrase have any meaning to any of you??? Really??? Our founders of this country are rolling in their graves. If I choose to light up in a park- I will- Fine me… arrest me… Cause when I get out I will do it again! Defiance to the King! Wake up people! wake up!

    • Jeffrey

That’s what I intend to do. No matter what the law is, I will live as I wish. Live free or die! Phuck you Bloomberg!

      • Sarah Ruiz

you are so rigth..i said let’s go back to the 60..went we …fiigth for our rigth’s..enough is enough..

  • Angel

Next, make cigarettes illegal.Think about how much money we’ll save on medical costs. The smoke from cigarettes rival the pollution from cars and trucks. One major difference between the two,we don’t need to smoke,we need the trucks and cars for our way of life to continue.Cigarettes kill, they should be outlawed. And to those who criticize,I used to be a smoker, life is better without them.

    • Steve

Then people have something else to make money off of illeagally, which in tirn leads to people killing people because they are cutting in on their turf. So lets start another drug war, shall we.

      • Jeffrey

Steve is right! Prohibition always leads to more organized crime, violence and more dangerous streets. This is why prohibition didn’t work and never will! Even youth find their ways to get booze and smokes.

    • Malber

Yes, and let’s make all processed foods illegal, all of ‘em. Think about how much money we’ll save on medical costs. Oh, yes, and let’s make working too much illegal, and the high cost of living — all that stress is killing us. Oh, and let’s make the plastics industry illegal. The plastic water bottles are leeching poison into the water we drink. Think about how much money we’ll save on medical costs.

By the way, we don’t need all the trucks and cars. Our way of life has escalated exponentially since the 1980s; maybe our way of life should be made illegal.

    • Reuben

You sound like an ex smoker. Calm down.

  • Barbara

There is no sientific proof that second hand smoke is dangerous or causes any health issue to the non-smoker. Question, what taxes are they going to increase or invent to make up for the loss of cigarette taxes?. Now you all can pat instead of just the smokers.

    • Ali

there is unquestionable scientific proof that second-hand smoke is dangerous, and more recently that third-hand smoke is also dangerous. idiot!

      • actuallyReads

There is not unquestionable scientific proof. The WHO study they site actually says second hand smoke has a positive effect for certain age groups. The “negative” effect has a relative risk lower than 2.0 which is defined as statistically insignificant. Look up what that means and get back to me.. Oh an 3rd hand smoke? Now you just sound dumb

  • patrick faup

why dont you look outside your window.. the boilers from surrounding building are doing more harm than us smoking.
ps: you should move to the country.. next to the nuclear plan. it is safer.

    • Angel

if people want to smoke and ruin their lives, they should do so in their own homes.I’m tired of walking behind someone and breathing in their second hand smoke.Horray for Mayor Boomberg for haviong the B****s to do something about it.Kepp your filthy, disgusting habit to yourselves.

      • KOULA K.

IF WE LEAVE IT UP TO BLOOMBERG, WE WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SMOKE IN OUR HOMES SOON EITHER. NOT FAIR. WE ALL HAVE OUR RIGHTS AND THOSE ARE BEING STRIPPED SLOWLY BY A MESSED UP MAYOR. HE SHOULD GO LIVE IN THE BAHAMAS OR WHEREVER THE HELL HE GOES AND WENT WHEN WE WERE BACKED UP WITH ALL THE SNOW THIS PAST WINTER AND HE WAS NOT AROUND TO DO HIS JOB CORRECTLY. HE IS AN ASS AND NEEDS TO GET THE HELL OUT OF OFFICE ALREADY.

  • TSTER

Nowadays you walk down the sidewalk and all you breath is second hand smoke from the employees who sneak out of their jobs to smoke!
NYC needs to ban smoking on all sidewalks as well.

    • Ellen

They should have banned smoking in public whether at the parks, beach or sidewalks decades age. God, I if they did that I wouldn’t have taken up that dame filthy habit in the first place.

      • JOE

TSTER , ELLEN, I Bet you weigh 250 lbs right.

  • englewood jack

YES! it’s about time. i’m tired of breathing other people’s carbon monoxide that i choose not to produced. nasty stuff, nasty. i’ve avoided some of nyc parks due to the smoke that just lingers there (tompkins sq, to be precise). now let’s modify ALL vehicles in manhattan to solar/electric. that would be another great step to air purification.

    • patrick faup

hey rnglewood jack. i hope you have a SOLAR heating and ac in your house too…. may be you are still waiting for the apocapypse too.

    • littlestar

How about someones’ methane ? That’s naturaly produced. This law is absured..

  • Bernie Sanders

I think hes an idiot as usual …This is another annoying law to stop people from smoking ..we have the rights to smoke .. tax the drinkers and go after the people who drink and drive .. and KILL people on the road . As A new yorker today is the day I will not visit a park or a beach or public affair .. We have to pay for everything but don’t have the right to smoke .. cant wait til the housing market is better I am so out of this disgusting city that I hate so much . I HATE NY SHOULD BE THE SONG !

    • Angel

Hey Bernie, simple solution,if you hate NY,move out.We need clean air more than we need you.

      • Jeffrey

I’m with Bernie Sanders! I HATE NY! It is the land of the unfree!

  • mike steede

Some of what this mayor has done is really cool with me, closed down some of the avenues on weekends let tourists walk and see the city, vendors can sell some of the best foods of the trucks, I like that..but the law kind of caters to new yorkers and non new yorkers that have jumped on the band wagon of ” ohhhh I cant breath” discusting habit, we pay taxes too, etc.. cigarettes are $12.00 a pack in my neighborhood and like cheap perfume, if it aint illegal you can use it over the age limit..

  • Good law

Thank you for this law. I am going to stop smoking after 25 years. Why? becuase if I light up and one person makes any kind of remark to me whatsoever, I’ll be in prison for murder. So thanks again. Less revenue for the state and I’ll see my daughter married after all.
