Report: Jets Have 'Legitimate Interest' In Randy Moss

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- The Jets appear to be on the outside of the Plaxico Burress post-jail sweepstakes, though they're reportedly in the mix for another talented-yet-troubled wide receiver.

The Jets have "legitimate interest in soon-to-be free agent Randy Moss," according to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta.

Conflicting stories on Moss surfaced once already. In April, multiple reports indicated the Jets were "seriously intrigued" by the New England Patriots, Oakland Raiders and Minnesota Vikings castoff. Coach Rex Ryan even touted Moss' playmaking abilities at the NFL owners' meetings in March.

Then, days later, Adam Schein of FOXSports.com reported that Ryan and the Jets were merely feigning interest "as a way to motivate Jets free agent Santonio Holmes."

So is this for real? Mehta's sources say yes, on one condition.

"The Jets will have more than a cursory interest in Moss if Holmes or (Braylon) Edwards doesn't return."

Fans might be wary of Moss, but cornerback Antonio Cromartie is ready to play alongside the future Hall of Famer.

"I would love to have Randy Moss on Jets," the eventual Jets free agent tweeted on Monday. "Much respect great vertical guy who has a lot left in the tank."

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum has repeatedly said he would like to bring back all three free agent receivers — Holmes, Edwards and Brad Smith. Of course, nothing can happen until the NFL lockout is lifted.

"As soon as we know what the rules of engagement are," Tannenbaum said, "we'll be ready."
