Seen At 11: CBS 2 Tells You How To Control Your Dog's Barking

NEW YORK (CBS 2) -- "As Seen On TV" products have exploded in recent years and include gadgets that help you lose weight and make the perfect bowl of pasta.

Now, the latest infomercial product claims to keep your dog from barking, but can a product actually quiet your canine? CBS 2 talked to some experts to find the best way to help stop the bark.

It can be one of the most annoying sounds and even worse if it's not your dog. but what's a dog owner to do?

There are countless anti-barking products on the market, including ultrasonic sound machines, special music, deterrent sprays and even shock collars. They all promise pet owners that they can calm their canine companion's yapping. Do any of them actually work?

Dog trainer and behaviorist Peggy Spencer says dogs "have a mind of their own," but did acknowledge "there are things that can be done and should indeed be done."

Spencer said the problem with many of products -- whether it's the "Bark Off" machine or a device that sprays the an unpleasant amount of citronella in your dog's face or an electric shock collar, each dog has a different reason for barking. She said the products don't address them and in some cases, can make the barking worse.

Dogs may bark because of anxiety, as an alarm or when they are playing.

"It's an up hill battle, it requires effort on the owner's part," Spencer said.

So once you identify the reason for the barking, Spencer said there are several options for getting it under control:

-If your dog barks too much when there's a knock at the door, redirect the dog's attention with a treat or a toy.

-If you're dog barks because he or she is left alone, go in and out of the house several times at various intervals so the dog gets used to the idea that you're always going to come back.

-If your dog barks out of boredom and just wants to play, don't yell or the dog will think you're barking along.
