TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Police in Trenton say they’ve arrested a 12-year-old for an alleged armed robbery.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 5:00 p.m. Sunday. According to the Times of Trenton, the boy allegedly walked up to a 27-year-old man on Hoffman Avenue, pulled out a pistol and said “Give it up.”

The man handed over a cell phone and $13. The boy then ran off toward the Roger Gardens apartments.

Detectives quickly learned the suspect’s identity.

When they went to his home, they found the boy and a .22-caliber revolver. Its serial number had been removed.

The boy is being held at Trenton’s Youth Detention Facility on armed robbery and weapons charges.

this poor kid was doing what he had to do to survive.

he’s probably got a bad crack & heroin addiction, 2 kids, and a baby’s mama who’s constantly on his back for money.

kids are starting younger & younger … some gangs are prospecting pre-schools for up and coming young thugs.

@muggsy, sadly enough that had some humor in it..it made me laugh. But seriously it just may be the other way around. Evidently he may be doing it to yes survive, and support the addiction of his mother.

It’s a sad day when you have a 12yr old not only armed with an illegal weapon but holding people up for their possessions. Everyone can perhaps speak out with their racists comments or flat out degrade this “child”. At the end of the day he could be in an abusive, no food, no love, no schooling and most of all no parental love environment. Regardless of his race if he does not receive the help he needs he will grow up to become an adult street gang member, bank robber, murderer or WORSE, one of those children that become terrorists, bomb makers, or go into a college and cause mass destruction. At the ripe age of 12 it’s not too late, it’s who takes the time to reach out to him and give him care he needs. Prison at this age will only make him more angry and he won’t receive the transformation that is apparently necessary.

When children are arrested and tried, if they are found guilty then their parents should have to serve the exact same sentence as they do.

    1. Genka Blyat Sukha says:

Thomas, I hope this happens to your kids when you take responsibility for them. Since you obviously have no children, leave the adult talk to parents, ok little one?

    2. ED49 says:

Wouldn’t help. The parents are probably in jail already!

Finster, they don’t say anything about race or color so I don’t know where you come off saying such a sarcastic, judgmental comment. Crimes are committed by every race, color, and gender. People are individuals, you can’t judge a million people based on one; that’s like saying one strawberry is rotten so the whole crop is bad, think of how ridiculous that sounds. Anyways, it’s very sad and a shame that he’s only 12 and involved in the vicious cycle of violence.

The father should be arrested along with the boy.

More often then not, a child is a product of their environment. Sure, some do break away from the abuse and neglect and lead productive lives. However, most become a mirror image of their parents or guardians. In this case, it needs to be determined how the illegal weapon was obtained and then left within reach of this child. More importantly, what kind of environment was this child living in? One could only imagine. If this child learned that armed robbery was a viable solution to his problems at home, then the question begs to be asked. And this was a learned solution, given the nature of the situation. He wasn’t just stealing a candy bar, but robbing a man with a gun at point blank range. Surely the parents or guardians hold much responsibility here, but don’t stop there. This child must be de-programed from this type of behavior before it’s too late.

Well what COLOR is the 12 year old???????? a little background on the housing project.

Straight out of Trenton, NJ, comes an 80’s baby born to a 19 year old mother. Hellz was in love with music for as long as his memory serves. He used to sing Luther Vandross, Barry White, Whitney Houston, and many other legendary artists’ songs, while sitting in the back seat of the car as his mother drove. At the of age 3, his mother and stepfather moved into their own first apartment in the crime and poverty stricken Roger Gardens housing projects in West Trenton, where you could literally find hundreds of crack cocaine vials scattered about the complex grounds, and was also home to the then ‘up-and-coming’ legendary Hip-hop group ‘Poor Righteous Teachers’.

He’ll be out in a month and try again. Hopefully his next target will be Jenny, and we’ll see if her lib views are revised.

Why is it always an Irish, Jewish or Italian kid committing these crimes?? Why cant they be more like the fine upstanding Spanish and African-American kids???

    1. Jason says:

There are few “Spanish” people in the USA, you ignorant twit.

I am surprised. His father may have taught him.

  16. Jenny says:

No they do not know what they are doing ~ they are not mature enough to understand the implications involved. It’s unlawful to have sexual contact with a minor under the age of eighteen due to their lack of emotional growth and maturation why hold them accountable for things they do not yet understand. Their should be some sort of punishment but not Jail time.

    1. Chris says:

They know the difference between right and wrong but their favorite rapper is always talking about robbing and killing in their songs saying it is ok. When will we stop the hate at the source

    2. Genka Blyat Sukha says:

Get off the crack Jenny. In the real world other kids do not see crime as a viable option, most kids learn from there immediate role models regardless of intention by adults. You on the other hand have never spent any days in the New York Public School system. I think you should send your kids here, lets see if they get guns and rob people or do you just give them condoms. Get off the sex ed balogna, you’re just corrupting young pure minds with your sex ed.

    3. Social History says:

Jenny, the “age of reason” is seven, not 18. A 12 year old who has a gun and uses it to commit armed robbery isn’t a toddler saying, “Bang! You’re dead.” Back in the 1950s David Wilkerson found many gangs used children as young as 8 to be lookouts, and trained them to be cowardly murderers. And you’re mixed up about sexual intercourse with minors too; it differs from state to state, and in a few girls of 12 can still marry with parental approval. “Statutory rape” is intercourse with girls under 16, not 18. Note too that this hoo-ha over 18 year old “babies” (who can vote and join the military) is new; my orphaned father had to leave school at 13 for a FT job in 1927! Until there were child labor laws, poor children began working at 5 in factories, mills, and mines.
