Bloomberg Determined To Get Gay Marriage Passed

NYC Mayor Ready To Use His Cash Against Those Who Vote No

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Using the power of his deep pockets, Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday demanded that state lawmakers vote to legalize same-sex marriage this year.

“It’s just none of the government’s business who you love,” Bloomberg told CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer.

In a speech he felt was so important that he used Teleprompters, Bloomberg demanded that the State Legislature end years of foot dragging and pass a same-sex marriage bill — now.

“The question for every New York State lawmaker is do you want to be remembered as a leader on civil rights, or an obstructionist?” the mayor said.

And in wading into the tangled web of Albany politics, the mayor is putting his money where his mouth is. He raised $250,000 at a fundraiser this week, has donated undisclosed amounts of his own cash and, aides said, is privately telling lawmakers that if they don’t vote for the marriage equality bill he will use his vast fortune to back their challengers.

“We deserve a vote not next year, or after the 2012 elections, but in this legislative session,” Bloomberg said.

Activists say they will not hesitate to raise big bucks to run challengers to those who oppose gay marriage.

“That has to be part of their decision making process right now. Not only is it the right thing to do but it’s also the politically smart thing to do,” said Ross Levi of the Empire State Pride Agenda.

Although the issue has the backing of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, it is tightly contested. Senate Republicans, who hold the key to the effort, won’t say whether there will even be a vote this year.

Senator Ruben Diaz, a Democrat, Pentecostal minister and vocal opponent, said there can be no such thing as marriage equality.

“Mother Nature tells you there cannot be equality because a marriage between a man and a woman have the ability to produce to procreate. A marriage between a man and a man and a woman and a woman doesn’t have that,” Sen. Diaz said.

Diaz said that instead of trying to strong arm lawmakers, Mayor Bloomberg should spend his political capital and his own capital on a statewide referendum that would allow all New Yorkers to have a say on gay marriage.

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos said a decision on whether to hold a public vote on the issue won’t be made for a several weeks.

LOL, I have to say the on the web dating or electronic dating has come a very long way since the days of basic chat rooms. Far more and more people are turning to on-line dating internet sites to display possible dates.

  2. A. U. says:

Well I can’t say that I expected better from this damn sodomite because hey you are what you support in this case. I can’t wait for this sodomite to leave office. He has f***ed up everything he has put his hands on since arriving in 2002. Why don’t he and his sodomite friends go off to one of his islands and leave us normal folk alone? Damn I can’t stand that fruit. That is the problem with people like him. They are always trying to force their views on others no matter how f***ed up those views are. Hey Bloomberg (SODOMITE), TAKE A HIKE !!. What can be expected from a person whose aim in life is to be nothing but the grand-marshall of the sodomite parade? He has done it like three times already. Damn stool-groomer.

  3. littlestar says:

KPMc Ya know you really talk out of both sides of your mouth very well. You tell me that I must have a good explaination for my Maker because of my judgment yet you lambast any one here who takes thier belief from scripture ?

  4. littlestar says:

hello my name is littlestar, and I am a sinner. Or in other words… I am DMK and I am above the law ! Wow great I feel so Happy ! I can do what ever I want ! I am special ! This wonderful…. I feel so free…..

  5. littlestar says:

hp ? hp ? Hello ? hp ? You are right. Our God does not make mistakes. ( Gaga rocks !) HE gives us challenges, rules, crosses to carry, ” greater jihads”to over come. The only mistake is when so called gay people choose to give in to thier immoral sexuaul feeling in the first place. All sin is quitting smoking, dude. Luv ya ! ! !

  6. hp says:

I am a relatively conservative person, that being said, so long as a marriage is between two committed and consenting adults I could care less if they are gay or straight. Two of the best fathers I know are in a long term committed relationship. They have adopted 12 kids and raise them with love, laughter and humor. They deserve to have the same rights as I do. Read about them at azcentral dot com, search Ham family. They are an awesome pair and are trying to raise money to BOTH legally adopt the kids since some states allow it and they one they live in does not. At a cost of $1500 per child for the 10 they still need to dual adopt it is a hardship.

    1. littlestar says:

hp- My friend if this is what you believe then ,you are not a relatively conservitive person. You are a liberal extremist. Of course they want to adopt as many children as they can, what better way to promote a same sex envirorment. They love them. Maybe. However they are also using them. Like some people adopt children so they can do farm work.

      1. hp says:

They are not using them. They are not activists, they are just two people in a committed relationship who are raising their kids. They are doing far more for unwanted children than too many so called christians are doing. My God does not make mistakes, and people are born gay or straight.

  7. William Holahan says:

Your comments are discusting, like someting you’d here in a toilet stall. Calling the mayor a f.a.g. shows what a biggot you are. But this argument has nothing to do with you and your stupidity. This argument is about civil rights for all tax payers, regardless of what foolish people have to say about it.

You are in-line with Rubin Diaz Sr., and therefore are also in line with the Westboro Baptis Church and the killers of Matthiew Shepard.

  8. William Holahan says:

Mayor Bloomberg is right, senators will be seen as obstructionists. Rubin Diiaz is pathetically misguided. He thinks he is an expert on mother nature, but seems to know ‘NOTHING of human nature, compassion, or human decency. Yes, a man and woman can procreate. Big deal. Some hetero marriages result in no children because they do not want to have children. Some married coupled decide to adopt a child, or have a child through a surrogate. There is no law regarding married couples when it comes to having children. So his argument against gay marriage holds no weight.

The bottom line is that tax payers deserve all the same rights as all other tax payers. We don’t elect our lawmakers to divide our country ane promote bigotry. Diaz says we (the supporters of marriage equality) are “RUNNIG SCARED”. That’s so wrong. We RUNNING AT HIM, BUT WE ARE NOT SCARED, WE ARE ANGRY!

    1. YGNYC says:

William Holahan, You are wrong, procreation is a big deal. As a matter of fact I am willing to bet that you are a result of procreation, as is everyone in this world. In 100 years when we are all dead, the only thing we can really pass on in this world are our genes and our DNA. The only way to do that is procreate. And yes, children do deserve to be with a real family, which consists of one mother and one father. I know it doesn’t always work out that way, but we owe it to our kids to try to live a traditional family. You talk about rights but you never want to address your responsibilites. You talk about what you are owed, but you never think about what you owe to others. You can try to fight Mother Nature laws but in the end a real family requires one mother and one father. I have no problem with gays getting the same rights as married couples (which they pretty much do with civil unions), but please do not have the audacity and the disrespect to call gay and lesbian unions marriages.

    2. littlestar says:

Luv ya Willie ! NUCLEAR EQUALITY FOR ALL NATIONS NOW !Every country has the rightv to detere aggression from hostile enemies as they see fit. Would’t you agree ? Is this not the same reasoning that you use for people who choose to be gay ? Get back to me baby …..

      1. tracey111 says:

Even you can’t be dumb enough to think attraction is a choice.

  9. Marcy says:

Good for you Mr Bloomberg! It’s about time. It’s ridiculous to think that descent, hard working, educated people can’t have equality in our society.
Everyone should be able to decide who they consider their own family.
Can you imagine not being able to marry the person you love most? Or not have them be able to visit you in a hospital if you are ill? It’s tremendously out dated and this law needs to be passed.

    1. littlestar says:

Marcy my love, yes this would a terrible thing to imagine, but can you think of something more terrible than a race of people intolerant twords the opposite sex ?

  10. William Holahan says:

Wow, are you sick. You delight in calling prople f.a.g.s . Your comments have nothing to do with the subject of the conversation – equal rights. Instead you are re-invorcing hoophobia and showing yurself to be a fool.

    1. littlestar says:

You liberal freaks ! where is the moral insentive beyond the eye of big brother and the NYPD, FBI, CIA….. What is the victimless crime ? You seem to think that if there is no blood then there is no crime. You are all the same. Intolerance and bigotry are natural to the human element. You can not bow. You can not admit guilt. You speek of the Maker but you do not mention His Name ? He never once spoke of the same sex love. His Name is Jesus.

      1. - says:

        insentive? speek? lol

  11. Fred Cantor says:

I guess I am niave but I dont understand where all this gay bashing is coming from. Thegays are what make New York City and this state so great, From Broadway , Media , design Wall Street and yes even major league sports are full of wonderful gay , straight and bisexuals. so all you haters out there get over it.

  12. mott says:

    You are 100% right

    1. KPMc says:

Just so there is no confusion or ambiguity… You two who are siding with the religious shouters are advocating the death of all gay people?? or just the Mayor? Make sure you have your explanation straight when you meet your maker.

  13. Mrs.Bethea says:

He states “WE” need to get this passed this year. This man wants to get it passed so He and His Man Can Run To a Church And Get Married.I have no Problem With It because as he stated we cant tell them who to Love, but for all the people who are against it , YOU ELECTED HIM!!!!

    1. KPMc says:

If you don’t have a problem with it than what’s your problem?

    2. KPMc says:

And for Pete’s sake… the state can’t force your church or any other to perform same sex marriages. This is about what the government can do, issue and enforce contracts, nothing more.

This really is at the heart of the issue and you ignorant people have no idea how this country is supposed to work.

  14. James S says:

It would be a wonderful world if people would stop putting others in a sex category as to who is gay, straight, or bisexual. We should be more interested in accepting others as human beings, as contributors to society, and their kindness to others.

  15. Scott Bennett says:

Marriage is a property contract. It has been so for thousands of years. Women were used as a means of securing land, cattle, sheep, houses, gold, or whatever the family of the bride wanted. There is nothing “sacred” about marriage. It is not a “Holy Institution” in this country which, in case you have forgotten, is a secular republic with no state interest in religion. The Constitution of the United States guarantees “equal protection under the law” for all citizens. Discrimination is forbidden for ANY reason. Stigmatizing a group on the basis of sexual orientation is no different than what states did when they passed laws forbidding inter-racial marriage. It was claimed, by the racist governments that passed and enforced those laws, that inter-racial marriage was “un-natural” and “against the laws of nature.” Sounds something like the arguments some of the “bible thumpers” are making.

    1. KPMc says:

For the most part I agree with you but the problem is both sides holding on to this moral/spiritual/religious definition of marriage. As intelligent human beings you and I realize that the state does not sanctify a marriage in a spiritual sense but a purely legal one. The state has the power to draw and enforce a domestic contract between two people. Nothing more.

The anti side is desperately holding on to this notion that if the state condones same sex marriage from a spiritual standpoint it some how diminishes the vows they themselves made before their own higher power. It’s ludicrous yes… but that is the crux of the problem.

On the other hand people on the pro side are also hung up by the same beliefs. They think that if the state allows it that some how condones it in the eyes of god and makes it a morally acceptable choice. Again… the state doesn’t do those things nor does it have the power to do those things.

Isn’t the real issue that any two people deserve the same rights as another two people? Wouldn’t a domestic contract cover that? The problem is people would have to compromise but that’s never going to happen. That would take intelligent thought and an open mind from both sides.

    2. doughnut says:

Hey, if you believe that all men are created eaqual then you live a secular lie. Got it ? The lie is the truth ? got it ? People who choose to give in to thier gay impulses do not deserve marraige equality.

      1. KPMc says:

And if you think God gave YOU the power to judge others your living in a spiritual lie. Get right before it’s too late.

  16. RichieT says:

Since he has no plans to run for mayor AGAIN, he’s not really worried about who, or how many, people he pi#@**s off.

  17. stephi says:

I have nothing aganist gay people, but marriage is between a man and a women and has been for thousands of years. Can it be called a committment between two people of the same sex and have the same rights as a man and women who marry. I can go with that, just don’t call it marriage. Here is Bloomberg at his finest. Do as I say just like a dictator. Just like a liberal, when you disagree with them your right of freedom of speech is attacked. The liberals think they are only ones who have the right of freedom of speech. You can tell the liberals are scared by the way they attack people who don’t believe like them What a bunch of hypocrites

    1. matt f says:

No one’s freedom of speech is being violated here. I have no idea what the hell you are talking about…

    2. KPMc says:

Why are you so hung up on that one word? If someone else uses it for their relationship does it somehow diminish from what you have and the vows you’ve made?

The government doesn’t sanction your religious ceremony or anything you do before your creator whether in a formal ceremony or not. All the government can do is issue a domestic contract, that’s all your marriage license is too.

I know it’s hard for you people to grasp this but the church and state are two separate entities and should always remain that way for the security of both.

Religion forced by government is meaningless and government dictated by a group’s religion is the antithesis of democracy and freedom.

You’d think intelligent human beings would have figured that out by now.

  18. caleb goldfarb says:

Mayor Bloomberg plays with himself and others of his own gender. It’s made him deaf, dumb, and blind.

  19. Straight 1 says:

Is it a sin to be gay?

    1. littlestar says:

No. All sin is like quitting smoking.

    2. Pol says:

No, it is sin to be gay only when you are seen as gay.
Else yahoooooo, enjoy being a pooper-scooper.

    3. KPMc says:

No… but is a sin to assume you have the power of a deity and judge like one. God does take offense to those that believe they are his equal.

      1. littlestar says:

KPMc- I am only doing what I LEVITICUS says. This is the word of God, is it not ?

  20. LoveThyNeighbor says:

Wow, the people on here have nothing to do but throw stones at other people. I am straight, married, with three kids. I also know several gay people who are in committed relationships. One couple has been together for 21 years and have raised an incredible kid, who is now 19. He was adopted from A Russian orphanage, and now has a great life and future. I will be the last person to condemn my neighbor by judging them. I thought that is what he told us to do, since we are all sinners! What is the matter with you people??

    1. Jay says:

      I agree with you 100%

    2. littlestar says:

If Allen Hevesi was your neigherbor would you judge him ? I mean he was a politician, they are suppose to lie and steal from the public. They were just born that way….

  28. Fred C. Rochester says:

A public referendum? It will be thrown out just like term limits. Numbers 32:23.

  29. littlestar says:

Sorry folks, I’m still ” put off ” when I see two people of the same sex walking down the street holding hands. Guess there must be something wrong with me ?

    1. Jayne says:

      You guess right.

      1. littlestar says:

Really Jayne ? So you expect us to accept something that has not been accepted, practiced publicly, through out the course of civilzed human history, to the best of my knowlege. Oh wait ! The ancient Romans had no problem with it. I’m sure there were gay couples cheering on the slaughter along with the rest of the mob. Good luck to you Jayne ! I don’t know If you are weak, arrogant , or maybe you were just born that way. Gaga rocks. . .

      2. Nick says:

Gays. Too stupid to know what sex they are. Suddenly they’re not stupid about anything else? You’re an evolutionary dead end – the WRONG in Nature. Get over it.

    2. Ellen says:

littlestar, no there isn’t. Have the same feelings myself. You would think that Bloomberg has much more to worry about then this. Like high unemployment, job loss, and not to mention the housing market,

    3. Damien says:

I’m put off when I see fat ugly people walking down the street holding hands. Ban fat marriage.

      1. littlestar says:

    4. Damien says:

Ok 🙂 Maybe then we can dye black people white so I don’t have to see those crazy race-mixers.

  30. paul kivitz says:

Bloomberg was quoted as saying New York City is one of the freeist cities in the most freeist country, the good ol USA. How free is this city where you pay taxes and your told where you can and cannot smoke? I am not a smoker, however being a life long new yorker, i see our basic liberties slowing being taken away. Whats next? Polarized politicians telling us how many children we can have.? Bloomberg PLEASE GO AWAY!!!! Seriously, i can’
    t stand you.

    1. b says:

Exactly. He even said “its none of the governments who you love”. So why is it their business if we smoke, eat McDonalds, drive into manhattan in rush hour..what a joek this guy is

  31. Charles L. Mehlich says:

This is great news. Thank you Mayor Bloomberg

    1. Dead End says:

Great news until the relationship ends and you are in divorce court (maybe even fighting over a kid you adopted in a custody battle). If you think you are experiencing an injustice now, wait until NY State has you in the court system. Then the whole lot of you will be saying “What the hell were we thinking”? It’s sort of a double edged sword. Yes you may gain some things, but you will loose some things too.
