One Million Pool And In-Ground Spa Drain Covers Recalled; CT Parents Applaud

WASHINGTON (AP / CBSNewYork) — Eight manufacturers have voluntarily recalled about one million pool and in-ground spa drain covers because of incorrect water flow ratings, and two Connecticut parents are applauding the move.

WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau On The Recall

The U.S. Product Safety Commission announced the recall Thursday.

The agency says the recalled covers could pose a possible entrapment hazard to swimmers and bathers. They were manufactured between December 2008 and April 2011.

No injuries have been reported with these products.

The manufacturers are Arizona-based A&A Manufacturing and Color Match Pool Fittings, California-based AquaStar Pool Products Inc. and Waterway Plastic, Georgia-based Custom Molded Products, New Jersey-based Hayward Pool Products, North Carolina-based Pentair Water Pool and Spa and Tennessee-based Rising Dragon USA.

Consumers who have the recalled drain covers should immediately contact the manufacturer to receive a replacement or retrofit.

Recently, a swimming pool company president charged in a Connecticut boy’s drowning pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide, a misdemeanor.

Karen Cohn, mother of the late 6-year-old Zachary Cohn, and her husband are urging anyone with a pool to look into this drain cover recall.

“We don’t have another family to have to endure the loss of a child due to an entrapment,” Cohn told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau.

  1. The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act REQUIRES you to have an anti-entrapment pool drain cover on your pool and spa…both residential and commercial. While there really isn’t anyone to enforce this for residential pools/spas (unless you need a building permit), you may want to look into entrapment issues surrounding drain covers. A 230lb man just drowned in a spa in Sandals Bahamas from entrapment in January…because they didn’t require covers there. The force from a pool drain is up to 450lbs for an 8-in drain. People, especially kids get eviscerated and die. Check out If that little girl’s story doesn’t change your mind about drain covers, nothing will.

Drainsafe is one of the manufacturers that was NOT RECALLED. They make the DS360, DS360M, and DS360MA. globalelectricalsupply carries them.
