NYC Lawmakers Rally At City Hall To Protest Teacher Layoffs

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposed teacher layoffs has caused a stir among New York City lawmakers, teachers and parents.

Those same lawmakers held a rally Wednesday outside of City Hall.

Council Education Committee chairman Robert Jackson lead a rally protesting the layoff of teachers.

A few minutes later, he went after Chancellor Dennis Walcot at a hearing, saying it's time the Department of Education cut back on outside contractors.

"When contractors are hired by the Department of Education, are ripping us off for millions of dollars, millions of dollars, ripping us off," said Jackson. "So the question that I and other people ask is who's watching the store?"

Walcot agreed that crooked contractors should be reported and prosecuted, but stuck to his guns that 6,100 teaching positions will have to be eliminated due to budget cuts.
