Free Doughnuts! America Celebrates 'National Doughnut Day'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Talk about a seriously "hole-y" holiday—America is celebrating the 73rd annual National Doughnut Day Friday.

Originally created by the Salvation Army in 1938, National Doughnut Day was an effort to not only assist those in need during the Great Depression, but also to celebrate the Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers.

The holiday is celebrated annually on the first Friday in June.

This year, you can celebrate by going to Krispy Kreme, which is celebrating by giving out one free donut—of any variety—per customer. Or you can check out Dunkin' Donuts, who will be giving out one free donut with the purchase of a drink.

New Yorkers who want to celebrate Doughnut Day locally, there are many other doughnut shops observing the holiday! Some of the places to check out include Doughnut Plant in Manhattan, Doughnut City Café in Queens or Seventh Avenue Doughnut in Brooklyn.

Another way to celebrate Doughnut Day is by texting "DONUT" to 80888 to donate $10 to the Salvation Army.
