Off-Duty Rikers Island Correction Officer Shoots Attacker In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (AP) — An off-duty correction officer has shot and wounded a man who attacked him with a pipe outside a fast food restaurant in Brooklyn.

It happened at 12:40 p.m. Saturday outside a McDonald’s on Church Avenue in East Flatbush.

Police say it began when a 67-year-old customer was attacked by the man. Correction officer Michael Turnbull intervened, but the man swung at him with a pipe and Turnbull drew his weapon and shot him in the leg.

Police say Turnbull shot him again in the leg when the attacker continued to swing at him.

The man was hospitalized in serious condition. His identity was not immediately released.

A Correction Department spokesman says the 35-year-old Turnbull joined the department in 2008 and was assigned to a jail at Rikers Island.

kendra your a jerk, why didn’t you jump in and was probably one of your friends that was doing the attacking.

  • bronson

He should be sent to re qualify with his weapon. You don’t shoot for the legs. Center mass. I will give him an A for effort.

My hat is off to the CO! Outstanding job and law abiding citizens thank you for stepping in and doing what had to be done. As for the clown that attacked the 67 year old man, well, I guess being in McDonalds as the old motto went “HAVE IT YOUR WAY”. You got what you deserved!

Great ! I wish it was easier for law abiding citizens to carry weapons. there would be less crime ! Now, what you have is tens of thousands of Illegal guns on the streets of New York ! Makes no sense.

I’ll treat that correction officer to a McDonald and a cup of coffee. A job well done. Promote this officer to Capt.or Sgt.. Too bad Mota and Moreno don’t have the same qualities as this cop. No they raped a drunk woman and got away with it, and their dumb wives smiles.

We need more people that will stand up like the CO. The more people that think they can get away with random acts of violence the more often we see it. Criminals should be the ones scared, not law abiding citizens. Remember the 67yr old is the victim in this case, the guy that got shot is the suspect and the CO is the hero. The CO did not have to step in to defend the victim but it is the right thing to…. Would you have tried to defend the victim?

tony its easy to defend yourself whn u have a gun !!!!!

      • Tony Knowles

Steve, If more law abiding citizens were legally carrying firearms criminals would think twice before trying to victimize someone. It has been proven time and time again legal guns make for a safer community. Read “More Guns, Less Crime” by John Lott. Remember criminals, by name and action, are not law abiding citizens regardless of what the the laws say. It’s time New Yorkers were able to stand up for themselves and be able to use the rights granted by the bill of rights. Most gun laws are unconstitutional and belive it or not are racist. NYC has a high number of minority groups hence they have strict gun laws, the politicians strip one right at a time untill you are no longer a citizen but rather a subject of the government.

I love the witlesses at the scene. They’re witless like kendra. They say the office should have subdued the psycho some other way. Notice how not one of them had tried to subdue the psycho at the scene?

  • Honorable

I have to give the correction officer my undivided respect and admiration. He could have easily killed the guy when he shot him but made the choice not to. Many or most NYC cops would have most likley shot him in the head.

    • Bob Fowler

most NY cops would have missed…just check Amadou Diallo…41 shots fired from within 8 feet, 19 hits…priceless.

  • Dave Clutter

You’re wrong kendra, and it’s a shame you think like that.i and a few million others would have done the same thing, but wouldn’t have shot to wound.

  • cool

Should have shot him in the head.

  • kendra

it sounds like a bunch of ogus pocus to me cause these officers think they areso slick to draw there weapons first and ask questions later cause that is the way they have always operated for years which is a damn shame.
