Authorities: NJ Jail Inmate Commits Suicide

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — An Oklahoma man being held at a New Jersey jail apparently committed suicide by hanging himself.

Monmouth County authorities tell the Asbury Park Press that a corrections officer found 18-year-old Zachery Sullivan in the county jail’s shower area around 9:25 a.m. Friday. The death isn’t considered suspicious, but an autopsy will be conducted.

Sullivan had been in the jail since November on charges of attempted arson, aggravated assault, attempting to cause widespread injury to others, possessing a destructive device and possessing a prohibited weapon stemming from an incident in Middletown Township.

He also was facing charges in Hudson County in northern Jersey, but further details on those charges were not available Saturday.

Your comments are disgusting. Here an 18 yearold, only in jail ON pre-trial CHARGES (NOT CONVICTED) was hung in the shower area of the jail.

First of all, this shows that no one was watching the shower area, and moreover that an inmate was able to take something into the shower area to hang himself without it being noticed? How many other things can happen in the shower area? Such as inmate attacks/rape, etc.

While we don’t know if this person suffered depression/threat of suicide, this sounds like poor supervision by the prison guards to me/lack of proper screening of his mental status.

It’s unfortunate that inmates often die in such county jails before having their trial. Shame on all of you people for your ignorance. In calling him a convict/saving tax money–what happened to innocent until proven guilty??? you morons.

Best regards to the poor family that must be suffering from this horrible incident.

The only awful thing about this is the family will probably try and sue the jail because somehow it will be their fault.

I would like to extend my thanks to this inmate for sparing the taxpayers the expense of providing for his useless existence! If only more inmates would follow his lead we wouldn’t need bigger prisons and it would free up tax money that could be better spent elsewhere.

I wish all convicts killed themselves. Would save us $.

Excellent, No cost to the tax payers.
