Mets' Niese Passes Heart Tests; Santana Close To Throwing Off Mound

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) -- Mets pitcher Jonathon Niese passed a battery of tests Tuesday, two days after experiencing a rapid heartbeat during Sunday's start.

Mets assistant general manager John Ricco announced that Niese had been given numerous tests at Detroit's Henry Ford Hospital, including an EKG and a treadmill stress test.

"There was a lengthy list of things they put him through," Ricco said. "So far, all tests have come back normal."

The pitcher was released, but given a heart monitor to wear for 24 hours, after which a decision would be made on his status for his next scheduled start.

Ricco also updated the injury recoveries of All-Stars David Wright and Johan Santana. Both are working out in Florida.

Wright has been out since May 16 with a stress fracture in his back, but took groundballs Tuesday and is expected to hit off a tee Wednesday.

Santana, coming off shoulder surgery, is continuing to play long-toss but could throw off a mound for the first time as soon as Wednesday.

"Everything's been good so far, but he hasn't pushed it," Ricco said. "That would be getting up on the mound and letting it go. He hasn't gone there yet. And a lot of that is really based on how he feels."

When will we see Santana back at Citi Field? Mets fans, sound off in the comments below...
