Gotham Gossipist: Harry Potter Actor Daniel Radcliffe Admits To Drinking Problem

By Kimberly Rae Miller

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If you happen to see the New York resident known for playing Harry Potter, don't offer him a drink.

Daniel Radcliffe set many teenage hearts aflutter when he put down roots in New York City, buying a $5.65 million brownstone on West 12th Street.  Since the big move, Radcliffe has been making the rounds on the Great White Way, first showing his naughty bits off in 'Equus,' and now taking a slightly more family-friendly approach in 'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.'

But the British transport won't be celebrating his successes with a drink. In fact, Harry Potter has been clean and sober since August 2010.

In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Radcliffe admitted to having a drinking problem.

"I became so reliant on [alcohol] to enjoy stuff," he said. "There were a few years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person's lifestyle that really isn't suited to me."

Radcliffe was so worried about falling off the wagon, he skipped his last Harry Potter premiere.

That's right. When "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" debuted, he wasn't walking the red carpet, but instead relaxing at home, watching "the Discovery Channel ... [with] a bowl of Sugar Puffs."

Sorry ladies, Radcliffe is happily coupled, and says that sobriety is doing wonders for his relationship.

"I'm actually enjoying the fact that I can have a relationship with my girlfriend [Olive Uniacke] where I'm really pleasant... As much as I would love to be the person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time, that doesn't work for me. I'd rather just sit at home and read, or go out to dinner with someone, or talk to someone I love, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh."

Aww, now that sounds like the Harry Potter we all know and love.  Someone get that boy a mocktail!
