Man Seriously Injured In Fireworks Accident Outside Centereach Home

CENTEREACH, NY (CBSNewYork) - Debris from a fireworks show, along with blue-colored hospital gloves, remains on the ground outside a home in Centereach following an accident during a Fourth of July bash.

Authorities say Alexander Abel, 33, was severely injured after a mortar-like firework misfired and exploded in his face outside his home on Smithtown Polk Boulevard around 10:30 p.m. Monday.

Abel is listed in critical condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center with serious injuries to his face and jaw.

"There was a huge boom, the whole house shook," one neighbor said. "I just saw him on the floor unconscious."

"I hope the poor soul makes it," said neighbor Angela Craniac. "I just pray for that man. I've been praying for him. So, I hope he's okay."

Neighbors said Abel recently moved into the area.
