Archbishop Dolan Worried Polygamy May Be Next Battle In N.Y.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan says he’s worried that the next step in the marriage debate will be another redefinition to allow multiple partners and infidelity.

“Recall how the Church resisted the ‘contraceptive mentality,’ fearing it would rupture the sacred bond between love and the procreation of children. Then, remember how the Church sounded the alarm over rising rates of promiscuity, adultery, pre-marital sex, and cohabitation prior to or instead of marriage. And now we ring the steeple bell again at this latest dilution of the authentic understanding of marriage, worried that the next step will be another redefinition to justify multiple partners and infidelity,” Dolan wrote in his blog on Thursday.

Dolan also lamented the anti-Catholic venom that surfaced in the gay marriage battle, saying he’s worried that “believers will soon be harassed, threatened, and hauled into court” for their convictions.

He also apologized to those in the gay community who may have been offended by the church’s stance, saying he’s honored that so many gays are at home in the Catholic Church and that his goal from the start was “pro-marriage, never anti-gay.”

New York became the sixth and largest state to legalize gay marriage on June 24.

  1. Pietro Armando says:

Returning to the Arch Bishop’s original fear, polygamy, one has to ask the question, which has been asked, in connection with the SSM debate, is polygamy the next “civil rights” battle? Many of the same arguments offered in support of SSM, can be used for polygamy, marriage is about love and commitment, its a civil rights issue, marriage equality, etc. So as long as the “consenting adults” rule is applied, can we, as a society, bar legal recognition of conjugal polgamous unions? If anything, polygamy as a marital practice, has far great historical precedence on its side, than does ssm, which is virtually, a recent, western invention. Also polygamy is practiced not only in this country as well as Canada. At the very least, polygamy, as opposed to ssm, preserves the conjugal nature of the marital relationship. The question is, if it’s okay for Jughead and Reggie to be married, why isn’t it okay for Archie to marry Betty with her consent, and marry Veroncia, also with her consent, while he’s still legally married to Betty?

    1. jayne says:

As long as you agree that Veronica has the right to marry Reggie, Archie and Betty all at the same time, with all their consent, then I see nothing wrong with polygamy. It should be the next civil rights battle.

      1. Pietro Armando says:

Hmmmm…..interesting.I would think that each marriage stands apart to a degree from each other. Simply because Archie is married to Betty and Veronica, that does not necessarily mean that Betty and Veronica are married. Now that ssm is legal in NY, as in a few other states, it could lead to a defacto trinary marital relationship. Betty and Veroncia marry in NY. They move to a state where ssm is constitutionally prohibited. In essence they are no longer married, Veronica marries Archie. That union is valid in all fifty states. All three move back to NY. Is/Are the marriage(s) valid? To make it really interresting, Betty marries Reggie in a non ssm legal state, and moves back to NY with his wife, and her same sex spouse. Does that open the door to court challenge? or is one or more parties guilty of bigamy?

      2. jayne says:

        I love it!!

I work in a law firm. Legalize Polygamy now. It will double our business. Who knew what a boon to the economy Polygamy could be.

  2. Nice going NY.. says:

Boy the Jews and Blacks talk about dealing with hatred and prejudice?? Try being a practicing Catholic in NY!!! There’s even a priest that hates his own Bishop, NICE!!

  3. MomG says:

You are on the WIDE road to HELL with that attitude, buddy. Imagine what the world would be like if your mother had aborted you. May Jesus have mercy on your immortal soul.

    1. jayne says:

That might be true if there was a hell.

  4. Joann Prinzivalli says:

In my analysis of Archbishop Dolan;s position, I determine that it is a matter of “heterosexist supremacism” rooted in misogyny – this allows seeing it as analogous to white racist supremacism. This gives Dolan an opportunity to see his position from “outside the box” – the full analysis is at my blog, at
    http://trans-cendence.blogspot.com/2011/07/archbishop-dolans-timmy-one-note.html

  5. O'Reilly says:

Yes the photo shows this man to be a very delighted delivered and kind
person, not!!! RC is still in the dark ages ,whose fools still follow these men.
How can a person go to school for 4 years and then get a degree to REALLY intervene with God? Funny & Sad.

  6. Da Capo says:

For a church that has paid over an estimated billion dollars in punitive
damages for Pedophilia crimes, who can take any of their leaders seriously
they love to condemn others and not clean their own house ,guilt is gelt
for them, phooey ,I am not an ex Catholic but a recovering Catholic just
as if this birthgiven religion in my life were a bad drug.
Protestants are more light hearted ,in most cases if you wish still to believe
    the Jesus & Co.stories.

  7. Nick says:

But he doesn’t worry about pedophilia.

    1. HARLEM GOING HAM says:

YOU GOT THAT RIGHT BUDDY. WHEN I WAS A KID, WE USED PALY BASKETBALL AT A CATHOLIC H.S., AND THE PRIESTS GAVE US THE CREEPS. THEY USE TO WATCH US LIKE GIRLS WATCHING THE BOYS PLAY.

  8. doobieman says:

One third of Catholics have left the church already, If all the gay people left the church there would be no church.Maybe the Cardinals & Bishops should get laid & stop worrying about other peoples sex lives.Have you seen any young nuns or priests, there are none, the church is dying , the sooner the better.

    1. Pietro Armando says:

“The church is dying”? Reports of her demise are greatly exaggerated. The Church has been around for 2000 years. I don’t think she’s going anywhere anytime soon. Rome is, the Eternal City. Those empty pews that have been vacated by European American Catholics, Italians, Irish, Polish, etc., are being filled, largely, by Hispanic Catholics. Go figure. Not only are Mexicans, and other Hispanics, performing jobs that Americans are unable, or unwilling to do, but they’re also going to the Church that Americans, are unable, or unwilling to go to.

  9. M.A.D says:

Archbishop Dolan is entitled to his opinion. People have the choice of agreeing or rejecting it, we still have free will… something that God gave to us.

  10. Stephen says:

…..I am a Roman Catholic Priest in the New York area. I have tried to be a really good one for over 35 years. Honestly, I cannot disagree with you on many levels. Both Dolan and DiMarzio are not only infuriating many in the pew, they are likewise enraging many good and decent clergy. I remember DiMarzio stating a few years back re: the gay marriage issue: “What next? Will people be marrying their pets?” Imagine? What an insult to the many wonderful folk from the gay and lesbian community! (just for the record: I am heterosexual….and celibate!) Honestly? Nobody is listening to these men in the pointed hats anymore. These Bishops are not only pulpit bullies, but they rant and rave due to the fact that it is precisely their POWER and CONTROL that is being threatened. Gay men and lesbian women have PROVEN in their loving relationships that their “unions” reflect the mystery of God’d love. Such a gift is a welcome and generous contribution to the society and church at large. I am indeed very saddened and outraged that Arch. Dolan has been taking bites from the same sour apple as Bishop DiMarzio. Their vitriolic statements do NOT reflect the sentiment of COUNTLESS Priests ithat I know. Sadly, the Priests cannot express their honest views out of fear of being sent to the Vatican gallows!! These Bishops will disipline their Priests in such a way as to cause horrific pain to the many that differ. It is so pathetic and sad. Rather than risk being sent to the Vatican gallows, the clergy are frced to kep their their mouths shut. In the meantime, countless folk continue to leave the church. Can you blame them when we have dictaors and not authentic leaders?????

  11. O'Reilly says:

Yeah ,I worry about men that wear gold clothes and pointed hats
with womens gowns telling the rest of us what to do,
How come while he is talking to the press he says nothing about the church
spending over 700 million dollars and still running St.Vincent’s hospital into
the ground, The RC chuch is the first in line for hypocrisy.

  12. Tom & Denise says:

Hey, this is nothing, I have to listen to my mother-in-law about who she is the perfect Catholic, and then bad mouths everyone……..

  13. Joe says:

Dolan should be worried about all the victims of sexual abuse that he covered up for years!!!

  14. Pietro Armando says:

RE: Battle star’s comments on valued traditions

Here’s a few more valued Catholic Traditions, care for the sick-Catholic hospitals, feed the hungry-Catholic charities, teach the ignorant-Catholic schools, colleges and universities, care for the children-again catholic charities, etc

    1. jayne says:

You’re confusing tradition with business. The catholic church does nothing that doesn’t profit them. Are those hospitals and schools free? Do those hospitals provide all services or only those they approve of?

If the church were a true charitable organization they wouldn’t all be living so high on the hog. They are all a bunch of money grabbing hypocrites.

      1. KPMc says:

In the interest of fair play… Catholic Charities has the best track record of any charity when it comes to making sure donated money is actually used to help people that are in need. They get the best rating from non-partisan groups that monitor such things while other charities’ track records are dismal. Look it up.

There are plenty of things to bash the Catholic Church about but Catholic Charities is not one of them.

      2. john says:

Jayne I guess you didn’t notice but St. Vincents, the catholic hospital in the heart of the west village in new york recently closed because they made no money off all the free services they were giving out……. and what community do you think they served in the west village, among others?

      3. jayne says:

        Sorry John

I guess you didn’t hear about the bad investments and mismanagement going on in that hospital. It had nothing to do with any free services. They weren’t giving out any more than any other hospital in the city.

      4. Pietro Armando says:

The Church is a true charitable organization. Granted “those hosptial and schools are not free”. The Church operates in the real world, and, despite what some televangelists think, money does not drop out of the sky. Thanks KPMc for pointing out that Catholic Charities has “the best rating from non-partisan groups that monitor such things while other charities’ track records are dismal”. Remember the Catholic Church is the catholic, or universal, church. One need only ask those who have benefited from the Church’s charitable work, if she, the Mother Church, while not perfect, is a “true charitable organization”. Also, only 6% of the world’s catholics live in the U.S. American Catholics aren’t always the end all be all.

  15. Eman Ruoy says:

Can we marry imaginary friends that live in the sky and need constant reminders that they are all powerful over us? But why does he still need our money?

I’m glad I ditched religion when I was younger. I don’t need a relationship with an incompetent like God nor his son Jesus. I don’t want to be touched in that way.

I mean they should be happy. A gay couple will be less likely to have an abortion than a heterosexual couple. Not that there is anything wrong with abortions.

  16. battle star says:

valued traditions such as clergy coaxing little boys into sex.

  17. battle star says:

it seems that william likes pedophilia being that its been a valued tradition among clergy.

  18. bigmamamuley says:

The Archbishop is wrong. The next step is people will demand to marry their animals. Anyone dare to bet?

    1. jayne says:

Marriage is a contract. A contract is between two (or more) CONSENTING adults. Animals and children can not give consent therefore marriage is not possible.

Of course that doesn’t stop sex with children and/or animals as the church has already demonstrated.

  19. William says:

It seems that R Franz thinks that the Catholic Church and its followers can be brainwashed into accepting gay marriage and abortion, just because it’s the right thing to do….. There are plenty of Christian religions popping up left and right that fully accept these.. Let them pack their churches every Sunday!! We like our values and traditions!!

    1. Shame on you William says:

William if I were you and Mr. Dolan I would be more concerned about the Churches hx of covering up unforgivagle crimes perpetrated by pedophile Priests. Unless of course this is one of “your” values and traditions. I suspect that during that very real crisis impacting the church “you” buried your head in the sand and didn’t cry out as you do now! Shame on you William!

      1. THE REAL SHAME!! says:

The shame is that you really believe that society will TOTALLY accept a gay couple as a real MARRIAGE…. try going outside of you “safe zones” MA, NY, SAN FRAN………… a family in the eyes of God(and MOST of society) is a man, woman and children. no matter how many laws are passed, that’s the truth and always will be!!

  20. Rod says:

Dolan attempts to instill fear is his only way to persuade people to his point of view. Fear is the Catholic Church’s weapon of choice because that’s all they have to try and brainwash people into being quiet and living the way they want you to. Anyone who actually takes him or the catholic church seriously (a place that worries more about everyone else’s house but can’t get their own in order) can easily be sold down the river. Dolan is like the wizard in the Wizard of Oz — it just took Toto to pull back the ‘curtain’ to reveal who he really is. A fake. Dolan is an example of what not to be, desperate to convince people there’s reason the world is going to come to an end if gays marry. Wasn’t the rapture suppose to have happened months ago? Goes to show you religion and those who believe they hear God, is a pile of do-do. Get this man and those like him, professional help.

    1. John L says:

Rod-you’re an idiot. I’m not Catholic and I agree with Dolan. Btw, what did the Catholic church have to do with the raptuire prediction? Nothing. Anyone who doesn’t agree with the militant gay agenda is accused of being hateful and intolerant. Shut the hell up already. True intolerance is coming from the agressive gay lobby that won’t stop bashing people with their lifestyle.

    2. Stephen says:

Dear Rod…..I am a Roman Catholic Priest in the New York area. I have tried to be a really good one for over 35 years. Honestly, I cannot disagree with you on many levels. Both Dolan and DiMarzio are not only infuriating many in the pew, they are likewise enraging many good and decent clergy. 1. The Catholic Way.. says:

If you feel so very strongly about this and disagree so much with the Catholic doctrine, why remain a Catholic priest?? I don’t understand, if you fell that the Vatican and in particular our Bishop is not in touch with your inner feelings, why not just lead in another form of Christianity? Why choose an internet blog to speak of your pro-gay marriage views Father. You can’t be a little bit Catholic, can you?? Isn’t that wrong too??? It sounds like there are deeper issues here!!

    3. liz says:

      AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. DeeDee says:

Who wants multiple mother-in-laws? One is more than enough!

    1. what a pain!! says:

      You’re not flippin’ kidding!! 🙂

  22. R Franz says:

Archbishop Dolan should worry about his Catholic congregations leaving the church due to the church’s non acceptance stand and intolerance on various issues. Jesus = LOVE FOR ALL…get it Dolan

    1. John L says:

You don’t even know what you’re talking about. Yes Jesus loves all, but he admonished sinners to “go and sin no more”. Love doesn’t mean I stand by and quietly accept someone else’s sinful behavior. Dolan is right. This is very bad for society. And I’m not even Catholic!

      1. jayne says:

And Jesus also said that no one should judge another. It’s not up to you (or Dolan for that matter) to judge, punish or try to stop “sinful” behavior. As a sinner yourself, you’re not qualified. So go live your life to the best of your ability and leave everyone else alone. God (if there is one) will do the judging.
