Officials Investigate Fire At Rikers Island That Left 4 Firefighters Injured

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Officials say four firefighters suffered minor injuries and 200 inmates had to be relocated after a fire broke out in an air conditioning room on Rikers Island.

Fire officials said the blaze started just after 8 p.m. last night and took three hours to bring under control. The cause remains under investigation.

Department of Correction spokeswoman Sharman Stein says there were no injuries to staff or inmates.

The displaced prisoners have been moved to other cells in the same complex.

These prisoner amenities are outrageous. If I were in charge, air-conditioning would be a reward for being model prisoners, not violent inmates. Color TV would be out completely as would the weight training room and three meals a day – it should be limited to two meals a day. Breakfast and a late lunch.
Jail should be for punishment and not reward.
As far as the fire goes, where are the cameras that record inmate movement ??

This is a detention facility, not a prision. The facility houses presumed innocent individuals that would be free if they could afford bail. Everyone has a right to a trial by jury, evryone is presumed innocent until which time they are convicted by a jury. So they deserve as innocent people all the ammenities they can get, it is bad enough they are incarcerated without having been tried and convicted, isnt that punishement enough?!
