SMITHTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — The Suffolk County SPCA has increased a money reward for information about whoever impaled a turtle with a nail at Sag Harbor.

The animal protection group said it found an Eastern Box Turtle with a 10 penny nail driven through it on July 5.

The turtle entered into the care of Wildlife Rescue and is expected to make a full recovery.

Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk SPCA, called the incident a sick act. He is asking anyone with information to come forward.

The SPCA is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to an arrest.

If you know anything, call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722. All calls will be kept confidential.

pound a couple of nails thru the culprits hands and nail them to a wall and leave them there for a few days. this person has no redeeming qualities and cannot be rehabbed at all.

You think you’re original? It’s called “crucifixion.” Would you have this sick fellow die for the sins of a society that devalues HUMAN life?

The human race is worthless we must give the earth back to the animals.

Because children are not taught to respect animals, that animals have feelings and know pain just as people do. There should be a hefty fine and some type of animal educational program, counseiling, and community service. People who do this kind of torture usually end up with a criminal record.

  • YouHaveToAsk?

“If someone is caught and convicted of this crime, what would the appropriate punishment be? Sound off in our comments section below…” A lot more jail time, with less discretion for judges in terms of sentencing and, either, real enforcement from the county district attorneys or divert the funds to the local SPCAs and let their people prosecute the cases.

  • YouHaveToAsk?

“Why would someone stick a nail in a turtle? Sound off in our comments section below…” Because the laws are too lax and no real education is done, around animal issues–”they’re just animals”, etc.
