$1,000 Reward Offered In Case Of Long Island Swan Impaled By Hunting Arrow

Bird Said To Be Recovering; Wildlife Officials Stunned By Heartless Crime

HAMPTON BAYS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Who would do something like this?

A helpless swan was shot with an arrow on Long Island. Now, $1,000 reward is being offered to catch the heartless creep, reports CBS 2’s Mark Morgan.

Animal experts believe this was no accident. An adult mute swan was found Friday with an arrow sticking through its body. It was a hunting arrow, meaning this act was intentional.

“Just to see the arrow going completely through the bird, you have to get it at close range, and you have to aim right at the bird to do that,” said Mark Lembo, executive director of the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays.

The arrow was removed to reveal a gruesome wound, and the swan has been recovering at the center.

“We immediately put him on IV fluids. We put him on pain medications, and obviously antibiotics. Right now he’s recovering fairly well. He’s eating on his own,” hospital technician Ryan Ortiz said.

The bird is unable to walk, but on Monday stood on its feet for the first time since coming to the rescue center.

Jim MacDougall of Wading River said he discovered the injured swan while kayaking near Indian Island Co. Park Friday. He watched over the weakened bird until wildlife officials arrived.

“I gently got him into a spot where I could kind of corral him between the front, the bow of my kayak, my paddle, and the shore, because I knew he couldn’t walk onto the shore,” MacDougall said.

Mute swans normally fly only out of necessity, so this bird was likely shot at close range. Why would someone intentionally try to kill a swan?

“I don’t really understand the mindset. I believe people do it just for fun, just to have that type of thrill,” Lembo said.

Lembo said X-rays will show how much internal damage was caused by the arrow, and, barring complications, the swan will hopefully be returned to the wild by the end of August.

Animal cruelty is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in prison, and/or a $1,000 fine.

yes this is terrible but even worse when rhe DEC kills 2 of them for no reason only to say they can be dangerous to domestic animals. Thats what happened to some friends of mine in StLawrence County who has enjoyed this pair of swans for 2 years only to have the Dec to pull up and kill them this year when they returned from the winter.

  7. Diesel says:

Whoooooa. I’m not aware of swans being on the endangered species list, making it illegal to shoot them. Are swans game birds? Does anybody eat them? Its at least possible that someone shot the bird for food and then couldn’t get out to the water to take it, and just left it there. Let’s not hang, draw and quarter him (or her) on the Internet before a jury gets a crack at him.

A military weapon for millenia before the invention of firearms. And you have to look at the target to shoot. A lot more honorable than using a gun from so far out you don’t have to see the enemy before you kill him.

Such a beautiful peaceful creature….why are bows and arrow sold as HOBBIES? How does anyone hurt a living creature this way and then go on their way. God Bless people like the MacDougalls. Cygnus is in my prayers.
Sto selling archery as a hobbie to heartless morons- require a license at the very least….

    1. arrow says:

Because archery is a hobby/sport. Do we require a license to drink? Smoke? The stupid acts of people can not be controlled by licenses or permits or bans. Stupid people do stupid things. Don’t get me wrong, this act is a disgrace, but putting the blame on archery as a “hobby” does not solve the problem.

As usual 1010wins reporting gets worse and worse. The line “It was a hunting arrow, meaning this act was intentional”goes to the top of my list of dumb things printed on this website. First of all the arrow has a field/target point on it. Second, just because its painted in a camo pattern means its a hunting arrow and makes the crime intentional? Where do they come up with this stuff?

  14. LiberalsAreEvil says:

The filthy maggot who did this is a spineless coward.

  16. RR says:

If I was able to find the heartless SOB who did this I would absolutely not take one thin dime. The SPCA needs the money. Acts like this make me sick.

    1. ellen says:

Too many people are getting away with too many things lately. It time for the government to tighten up and give more harsher punishments . You do the crime iyou do the time!
