Jets Reach 5-Year Deal With Santonio Holmes; Nnamdi Asomugha Next?

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) -- Mike Tannenbaum's phone must be ringing non stop in his Florham Park office.

Santonio Holmes has agreed to terms with the Jets on a new 5-year deal, reportedly worth $50 million with $24 million in guaranteed money.

"Congrats to @santonio10 on his new deal," Jets free agent Antonio Cromartie tweeted on Wednesday. "That's what I'm talking abt. Good friend and excellent teammate."

Holmes re-tweeted the message just prior to 11 a.m.

That's one wide receiver down with Brad Smith and Braylon Edwards left on Tannenbaum's to-do list.

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, the Jets have contacted cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha -- the cream of this year's free-agent crop.

Many Jets fans are clamoring for the eight-year Oakland Raiders veteran. Asomugha, alongside star Darrelle Revis, would guarantee the Jets one of the most feared cornerback tandems in the NFL.

The decision, wrote the Star-Ledger's Jenny Vrentas, could hinge on whether the Jets are willing to sign Asomugha at the expense of other "critical spots like safety and pass rusher."

Cornerback Darrelle Revis says `"I hope we get'' free agent Nnamdi Asomugha to join him in New York's secondary as the team makes a push for the Oakland Raiders star.

Revis says Wednesday on a conference call that Asomugha is the "best cornerback in the league,'' and adds if he signs with the Jets "our pass defense is going to be sky high.''

But that's not all. Tannenbaum also reached out to Smith and Cromartie on Tuesday, reported the New York Post.

The Jets, up against a $120 million salary cap, may have Mark Sanchez to thank if they manage to sign Asomugha. The quarterback announced Tuesday that he'd be willing to restructure his contract in order to help the team wheel and deal in free agency.

"Whatever we need to do to win, it's on," Sanchez, who has a salary cap figure of $17.7 million, said. "I'll tell the guys upstairs this, too. They know that. Whatever it takes to win. If it's throwing the ball left-handed, I'll throw left-handed. It doesn't matter. We need to win and we'll get the right players."

Holmes hauled in 52 catches for 746 yards and six touchdowns last season.

The Jets also lost a player on Wednesday. Quarterback Kellen Clemens has agreed to a deal with the Washington Redskins, according to multiple reports.
